Possible Reaction to Cereal

My son is 6 1/2 months old, and we have just started solids. I introduced rice cereal (using breast milk), then canned carrots, and a few other veggies and fruits. The only foods he likes and eats so far are rice cereal, peas, and we just added oat cereal yesterday. 2 days ago he had carrots with rice cereal and breast milk, without any problem, although he didn't eat much, as he really seems to hate carrots. He also had some rice cereal in the evening, which he absolutely loves, and soon after that I noticed a rash around his mouth, in his cheeks, and hands (from touching his food, I guess). He had no other symptoms, and the rash had disappeared by the next morning. I was certain he had a reaction to the carrot, and decided to switch from Gerber to Earths Best organic baby food. The next day I served him peas and introduced oat cereal, again, no reaction. He loved the oats, so I served only oats thst evening without any fruits os veggies. He loved it so much he finished almost an entire bowl. Within 10-15 minutes he had the same rash on his face and hands. Naturally I called our pediatrician, left a message with the receptionist, then the nurse. The nurse called me back with the answer: avoid oats for now. It seems like the dr did not really get all the info, but I didn't feel like arguing. So my question is: is my son allergic to grains? And if so, what can I try instead of the rice and oats? I don't want to give up the only foods he really likes, but I'm not sure what else to try instead? Does anyone have any similar experince ?

What can I do next?

Despite many Dr.'s opinions, the prevailing nutritional wisdom is to not feed grains first. They are more allergenic! Do heed the previous poster's advice. One food a week. Preferably vegggies such as peas, green beans, squash. Very easy to make your own food with organic veggies. He is only 6 mths and since he is getting breast milk he is still getting optimum nutrition.
Slow and steady is the best way to go. Take your time.

My son, 9 months old, has the same reaction to Oatmeal he absolutly loves it, but he is allergic, it makes his stomache hurt so bad he will wail allll night long and have a rash it is so awful. So we tried feeding him Multi Grain cereal instead and he had no reaction to it, he loves to eat it.

We have recently just tried giving him just the baby food out of the jar warmed up and he reacts much better to it.

You just have to try things and see what happens. Then you will know which ones he can and cannot have. My son currently cannot have carrots or peas makes him react bad.

So go to the store and see which cereals are avaliable and try them and see if he reacts or not. If he does to all of them, then just try the baby food, he might enjoy them better, and then later on in a few months try the cereal again if you like.

Good luck!

If a child has a reaction to something you should never give it to them without having the ok from the Dr. again. If you continue to give it to him, he could become very allergic and make his future a lot harder, he could become allergic to more things because of it too. I think trying a different brand is ok, but if the same thing happens stop giving it to him. The cereal is more filling than anything but doesn't have much nutrients so trading it for something else should be fine. My kids (all three of them) never ate the carrots, hated them from the start. I always did veggies first with my first two and when I started my third child on food the Dr said it didn't matter and asked if my boys at veggies any better now, I said no, she it doesn't make a difference give her what she will eat. So I would go ahead and try fruits... BUT you always only introduce one new food per week, so you will know which he is allergic too without a doubt.
( Just FYI... My son is allergic to anti-biotics because of too many exposures and many grasses but not food, my daughter is VERY allergic to peaches and had aniflaxis reaction to them at 8 months old and has had a small reaction when given something with peanuts on accident)

If it's just a temporary rash and not affecting anything else I would probably keep giving him the oats. My kids would get rashy after lots of things, even the bath sometimes, but it was always temporary, didnt seem to bother them and was something they grew out of as they became sturdier.
