She is just fine, you do nothing. The first food is thinner and one fruit or veggie and the 2nd is a little thicker and they start mixing like apples and carrots, etc. usually you start with the 1st that way if she is allergic you know what fruit or veggie it is.

Other than she's too young to be eating baby food yet you didn't do anything wrong. I really think the longer you put it off the healthier your child will be.

Stage one is ONE food. So you can rule out allergies by starting her on only one thing at a time.

State two is combination foods. Such as turkey and peas and carrots. It's combined and if she has an allergic reaction you don't know what she is allergic to.

Baby food is flavored goo, not nutritious at all. It has added minerals and vitamins but her formula or breast milk has everything she needs, actually more. The formula has additional things such as DHA that helps a baby grow in good ways.

I called the baby food company one time, either Del Monte or Gerber about some baby food I'd been given that was out of date, that week.

They told me that baby food starts losing it's nutritional value the moment it is put in the jars. It sits in warehouses sometimes months and then it's put on the shelves, we don't know how long it's been sitting. So they told me to never use any baby food that was even near the expiration date. By the time we get it and bring it home it has very minimal nutrition.

Here's how I see it.

The baby is eating formula and doing well. Mom things it's time for them to start baby food so they start giving them a meals instead of formula. The baby isn't getting any nutrition so they start starving. So they eat more. The goo fills them up but they aren't getting any "food" from it. They get fat from the useless goo and mom thinks her baby is a great eater and gives them more. The baby is hungry all the time so they want more and get fatter and want more.

So please just don't feed her baby food. If you just have to give her something to eat to make yourself feel better then get some cookbooks about feeding babies and toddlers and make it yourself.

But always give formula or breastmilk first. It is complete nutrition and can't be beat.

Stop worrying about it. Wait a week or so and then put her back on First Foods. And give her only one new food at a time - one new food per week.

This isn't about her getting food as nourishment. It's about her system learning to digest food. It's about training her palate to be used to different tastes and textures. It's about taking your time to introduce new foods to her.

Don't feed her much. Until she is a year old, she needs to be on either breast milk or formula. THAT'S her main source of nourishment.

There is little difference between them. Stage 2 is a little thicker that's all.

If her tummy isn't handling solid foods well yet, back off and go back to just breastmilk/formula. Most peds don't recommend starting solids until 6 months anyway.

With my 2nd, I waited until closer to 8 months and then just gave him real food - whatever we were eating, cooked softer and cut in small chunks (pasta, peas, carrot). As he got older and needed more to fill his belly, I gave him some oatmeal made with formula. I would nurse him before dinner, because that's where the actual nutrition is. Then put the small pieces of food on his tray to try to feed himself while we were eating. Then oatmeal for bedtime snack. But again, I didn't start until 7-8 months old. At 5 months, breastmilk/formula only.

After your SWH: At 5 months she should be getting her nutrition from breastfeeding milk and formula. Some babies do eat a small amount of regular food. A SMALL AMOUNT! If she's hungry, give her more breastfeeding milk and formula.

So you spit your food into her mouth. You and baby are not birds. This addition to your post makes me wonder if this post is real. Perhaps in 3rd world countries, moms may do this because they don't have a way to macerate (make food more like a liquid.) I suggest that this is unhealthy. You have adult enzymes that her body isn't ready for. You also are increasing the number of bacteria and virus germs than her body is ready to deal with.

If you're mixing foods in your mouth, you won't be able to know which food causes a reaction. How do you know which food your baby is ready to digest? If you're not breaking up the pieces to form a liquid, you risk having her choke.

Babies do reach up to our mouth. That doesn't mean she wants to eat your food or that she's hungry! At 5 months she is not strong enough or coordinated enough to pull your mouth to her mouth. You were worried about giving baby stage 2 baby food and aren't concerned about putting your chewed up food in her mouth?

Please talk to the pediatrician tomorrow. A nurse in the office can also advise you. Really, is this real post?

Solid poop is to be expected when a baby eats foods other than milk. This is not a problem! The only difference between stage 1 and 2 is texture. They're both the same food.

I suggest you learn more about feeding a baby. Talk with your pediatrican. Perhaps, ask to talk with a nutritionist.

As you can see, there are a variety of answers. I'm sure that's confusing.

So let's start with WHY you gave her 1st foods, let alone 2nd foods. Did the pediatrician recommend it? Has she not been gaining weight? Did the doctor just feel that "it's time"? Some kids don't start until later, some kids never eat baby food, just your food pureed and ground up, and some kids start earlier than 5 months (mine did, on the pediatrician's recommendation).

Adding foods changes the consistency of her poop - so are you just noticing that it's not runny like breast milk stools? That's completely normal, as others have said. You'll see more and more of that as she gets older and as her diet increases. However, there's another issue - do you feel she is constipated and having trouble with her bowels? If the latter, put her in a warm bath and also move her legs while you are playing with her or changing her. Bend her knees and put her legs up closer to her abdomen, as if she was in a crouch position. Move them up and down, gently. That can get things moving.

As others have said, 1st foods are single foods (fruit, veggies usually), and 2nd foods are often combinations and less watery. The idea is to get the child used to swallowing and working with thicker foods in preparation for full table foods. In the beginning, they can only manage the real liquidy foods.

What else are you giving her? How much breast milk or formula? If she fills up more on solid foods, she's taking in less formula and breast milk. That can be a problem for 2 reasons: 1) breast milk and formula have more nutrients, while the baby food only has a few. 2) And this is important - milk/formula have LIQUID and she needs that water to keep her poop softer as well as to hydrate the rest of her body. So you may find she's much reduced in water intake. In the short run (very short run), I'd give her some water in a bottle to just hydrate her. Do an ounce or so several times a day.

Please call your pediatrician to discuss all that you are doing and what the result it. Your child's doctor has a 24 hour line - usually it's the regular office number, and after hours and on weekends, it will go to an answering service. If your child does not appear to be in distress, this can wait until Monday. But call then and discuss it with a nurse, and possibly get a call back from the doctor. And don't wait a week the next time and then go on the internet - call your own doctor, who knows your child and who will get back to you much sooner. We are just moms, not doctors, and we don't all agree with each other - each kid can be different, and your doctor or nurse can ask you the questions we are asking you, and many more.

Commercial baby food is a waste of money - My daughter started reaching for my plate long before she even had teeth. I gave her what was on my plate - spices, seasonings, and all - just mashed up soft so she could swallow it.
