My 15 MO daughter has had a congested cough for quite sometime. I"ve tried prescription cough medicine, which didn't help, so I called the doctor thinking it might be allergies. I've been giving her Zyrtec at night for the past 3 nights. She still wakes up coughing, but it doesn't sound as 'wet'. TOday, her daycare called and said that her nose is running (again, nothing new), but now her eyes have a green discharge. I have a call in to her doctor again to see if she needs to be seen. Are these signs of allergies? I heard that kids can't be tested until they are older - 5 or so. We have 2 dogs and a cat, so I'm worried that they may be the cause of this. Any suggestions, or related experiences??

So What Happened?

She has pink eye! Yuck - I'm sure I'll get it this weekend. However, in regards to her cough - I am bringing her back in two weeks to check her cough and the possibility of asthma. :( Every time I've brought her in, she has had a cough as well as other symptoms, so this time we'll go in just for the cough. This site is great - thanks for the continuing advice!!

Could be allergies, could be sinus problems. I've had allergy problems since toddlerhood, so I understand how uncomfortable your little one must be! They generally won't do a full allergy testing panel till after age 3, but an allergist can definitely help you get the symptoms under control for the time being if they determine its not sinuses at your regular doctor, or tell you if it's sinus related. The coughing can also be a form of asthma....don't panic. Asthma can be directly related to allergies, and isn't always in the "asthma attack" form you think of. It often shows up as a persistent cough, especially at night. Most allergists treat both, as they are closely related. There are great medications out for these types of problems now days, so there is no reason for your kiddo to suffer!

I think it definitely could be allergies, because sometimes allergies can graduate into a sinus infection which can come up through the eyes (this happened with my two year old recently - I though she had pinkeye!) Kids can be reliably allergy tested after age two. We've checked on this with my husband's allergist and it has been confirmed through others as well. My 10 month old has some issues, and so far allergy tests aren't showing anything. I guess we'll wait till he's two. Good luck!

Southwest Allergy & Asthma Center (SWAAC)
John Van Wagoner, MD--John Meiser, MD--Joann Lin, MD---Pediatric & Adult AA&IAll Great docs. Can test on small children. ###-###-####---Skin Testing-you get immediate results, blood testing takes at least a week to get back---but at the least, have her evaluated. These docs see both of my chidren.

My daughter struggles with allergy problems and has since she was about a year old (SHe is just over 2). She sees Dr. Fawcett in Southlake and she is fantastic! I read a lot of misinformation about allergies....There is a blood test they can do called the RAST- it is not perfect but can rule out some big food and airborne allergies right away. That is a good place to start. Go see Dr. Fawcett- You don't want your child chronically sick if you can find out what the problem is. My daughter is on a routine use of Flonase nasal spray and Clarinex Antihistamine and so far it has really helped. Before that she was getting sinus and ear infections monthly. Good Luck
