I am constantly thirsty. And I don't mean a normal kind of thirsty, I mean, I can turn up a can of soda and not stop till it's empty, and go for another one. I thought maybe it was the soda, so I started drinking more water, it doesn't help at all and it makes me sick to my stomach. I would say I drink a 2 liter a day of soda and about the same of water. Any suggestions?

I am not overweight, actually a little under the norm for my height. Diabetes does not run in the family.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the input. It seems to be unanimous.Obviously, I know that the soda is part of the problem. I have tried to lay off the soda, however it is the only thing that quenches my thirst. I will talk to my doctor about it soon. Again , thanks

V., diabetes has NEVER run in my husband's or my family yet both of my kids and my husband all have type 1 diabetes. Type 1 doesn't run in families the way Type 2 does.

You don't have to be overweight in any way to have diabetes. Both my kids are under the 20th percentile and my husband is extremely fit.

Even if you don't have diabetes, you need to see a doctor about this. SOON!

Caffeine and sugar both dehydrate your body. You should be drinking, at minimum, double the amount of water as soda. Two liters of soda a day is a lot of soda. Your body needs to get used to large amounts of water, so start smaller. Be sure you eat plenty, otherwise any large amount of liquid will bother your stomach.

I would go see the dr. This is a key symptom of diabetes, which don't have to run in your family, but it can also be a key symptom of heart issue or a side effect to some medicine.

Please check with your doctor.

you really don't know why you're thirsty all the time?? first STOP drinking a 2 liter of soda everyday. "soda" = "sodium" = dehydrates you. drinking soda does NOT cure thirst. it makes it worse. not even to mention the sugar - that is just asking for diabetes and a million other diseases. go see your dr. for sure. if you drink a lot of water at a time it can make you feel real full real fast, sometimes causing sort of a nauseus feeling. don't use that as a reason to cop out - your body NEEDS water. i don't buy when people say they "don't like" water, or "can't drink" water. bull. be a grownup and drink it. that's what your body has to have to survive. and if you drop the soda completely (it's nothing but chemicals that is killing your body, especially at those amounts!!) you will be on the right track. again- SEE YOUR DR.

Another thing it is a symptom of is Hashimoto's disease...it's a thyroid issue. My friend had this as her only symptom and her Dr. figured it out from there. (I wish we could all have Drs like that!)

Too much soda! Not only are sodas bad for your health, but they are very addicting. Too much caffiene and sugar, in any form, can be just as bad.

If you decide to stop drinking sodas, be prepared for a headache! Been there myself.

Diabetes doesn't have to run in the family. You need to be checked for Diabetes.

I have the same issue with being constantly thirsty. I am Hypoglocemic. Some doctors say, Hypoglocemia is being borderline Diabetic.

Drinking too much water can flush your Electrolytes from your body and cause more problems.

Everything in moderation, seems to be the best.

It sounds like diabetes and it doesn't have to run in your family for you to have it. See a doctor to get tested. Instead of drinking soda, switch to sparkling water. It has the same fizz as soda but without the sugar, sodium and calories.

Wishing you the best,

M.

That's a symptom of diabetes, and drinking that much soda daily could be a major contributor to the development of that disease. Get a blood test to see if you're diabetic, and stop drinking all that soda. Stick with water and other unsweetened beverages. You can absolutely be underweight and have diabetes. It also doesn't matter whether it runs in your family or not. If you're not treating your body well with a healthful diet you're likely to develop all sorts of medical problems. Be well.

I drink about 3x that... so it sounds perfectly normal to me... BUT since this is a "new" thing for you I would make an appointment with your doc.

Suddenly increased thirst can be a sign of several things. While diabetes tops the list I can think of 5 or 6 others. Doctor time :)

Do your very best to cut the soda and carbonated beverages, of any kind, completely out!

Drink only pure water.
If you don't like the taste, add a twist of lemon, lime, or orange.
Get a good filter for your tap and filter that H20.

Eventually, you will crave water and not desire the soda and sugary stuff.
And you'll likely live a lot longer.

Blessings,

There are 2 types of diabetes and diebetes insipidus is one in which people are thin. Also there can be a problem with the pituatary or the thyroid. You need to see your Dr and get some tests run. In the meantime try diet soda if you must have soda. Excessive thirst and urination are signs that your blood sugar levels are probably really high.

Do you urinate a lot too? If so, you need to be tested for diabetes, even if it doesn't run in the family. Extreme thirst is a symptom. It is your body's defense mechanism to dilute all the sugar in your bloodstream.

Hi V.! It still couldn't hurt to get the diabetes thing checked out. It did not run in my family either and my Dad was the first one to end up with diabetes. He didn't go to the doctor right away because he thought no one else in the family had it so it probably wasn't it. He finally went after we harped on him long enough and it was in fact diabetes. Look at it this way, you can get it checked and elimiate that problem if it comes back OK.

Go to the doctor today, constant thirst is a sign of diabetes. Diabetes does not have to run in the family and you do not have to be over weight to have it. Untreated diabetes could cause major health problems. If the doctor determines that you do not have diabetes he can investigate further for other causes. Stop drinking all that soda, that is bad for your health

This is a late reply but soda DOESN'T quench your thirst. That is why you continue to drink it. The caffeine & sugar are addictive & bad habits to break. You may be lucky enough to not gain weight from all that sugar but it still has a harmful effect on your insides. Water is truly the best thing for you. Maybe try tea for a change of pace & use Splenda to sweeten instead of real sugar if needed. I know water can be boring. Our family uses Crystal light for flavor. But we use less than the suggested amount so it is more like flavored water. Good luck to you! I used to be an avid soda drinker & now that I drink water I can't stand the taste of soda.
