I never could get my little one to take a pacifier but my sisters little boy had one. He had his till he was almost 24 months. She was having alot of trouble getting him to stop using one so she took him to one of those build a bear stores and they put his pacifier into the bear together. That way he could still have it with him but had a new item to use for comfort. She explained that he was no longer a baby and didnt need it but that his new bear was scared and needed it. It worked really great. Hope this help a bit.

In my opinion you just have to take it away. Thats what we did with our son who is now 4 yrs old. We started off taking it away during the day except for nap time and bed time. Then after he got use to that, we took it away for good. He cried at first but we did not give in. After a while that showed him that crying wasn't doing any good. When she is eating or does not have it, hide it where she can't see it. She will cry, but it will not hurt her. Remind her she is a big girl. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

I have heard of some people trying to put a bad taste on them. Like pickle juice or something like that. U have to do it to them all and just keep reinforcing with that yucky pacifier. Another thing I have heard is to tell her that they are for babies and she is a big girl. Big girls don't need pacifiers. lol Somewhere along these lines I also heard of someone tying all the pacifiers to a balloon and letting the child release them to send them to the little babies in the whole world. Then they are the ones letting go. They don't feel forced. I would think too... that if you act like u can't understand her when she talks with it in her mouth... then she mite start taking it out if she wants to get her point across.

Dear M.,

Have you tried just sticking it out while she cries? Maybe try telling her it's time for a big girl step and give her a sippy cup. THen you may end up with the problem of her carrying it around in her mouth but that's when you buy her a hard plastic top cup and just teach her that after she takes a drink she has to lay it down.
My son was hooked on his but we just kept telling him it was nasty and my brother and dad would take it away from him and he would cry to but sometimes letting them cry helps them realize they don't really need it.
It was hard breaking my son from it as well.

I like the advice of cutting off the tip. Or maybe she could try something like a Goodbye Party. Nothing major, keep it simple. Also, give a small reward for becoming a Big Girl. Just a thought, hope it helps.
Best of luck!

I didn't take away my kids pacifiers until they were two years old. On their second birthday I told them that they were now becoming big kids and it was time to give another baby their pacifier. It was hard at first but after a few weeks of crying and screaming for a pacifier it eventually quit. I would talk to your daughter and tell her that at age two is the time that they should get rid of the pacifier. Good Luck!!

When my son would try to talk with a pacifier in his mouth, I told him "Mommy will not listen to you if you talk with that in your mouth. Take it out and tell me what you want and I will listen." As far as taking it away, another mother posted something about that issue with her 3 year old, and lots of mothers responded, so you might find her post helpful. :) Good luck
