Only Day 3 of Underwear - Road Trip Next Week

Couple days ago I asked if my method of just putting my child in underwear and going out to run errands was a good method of potty training or not. (My son's almost 3 1/2 and as stubborn as his father). Anyways -- we're on day 3 of no diapers during the day. Day 1 we did the library and grocery store, dry at naptime, had one accident at home after nap, diaper at bedtime. Day 2 we did Nana's house and Chuck E Cheese (even the 45 minute drive there he stayed dry!) and he was dry all day/evening, diaper at bedtime. Day 3 he woke up with his diaper on and kind of 'cheated' by pooping in his diaper. But he's been dry all day! I am SOOO HAPPY!

Next week, we plan to drive 5.5 hours to my grandma's house. Curious what you ladies think - should I put him in diapers for the trip so we don't have to stop so often? I think he should wear underwear, as I don't think he should backtrack and think that diapers are okay. It's a lot of country roads on the way there, so plenty of tall weeds to pee in. What are our opinions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Road Trip was cancelled. By the time we DO go to Great-Grandma's. he'll hopefully be just fine potty-trained by then. Thanks for all your advice though, and product ideas!

don't back track, wear undies and stop often. Even though that is a pain, you can't teach him to wear diapers sometimes and then undies others.

I agree. Don't backtrack. Stick with underwear. However, be sure you get some of the dog potty training pads and line the bottom of the car seat. You don't want to be one hour into your road trip and have a soggy car seat to deal with (and smell). We did this when our youngest was beginning to train and she did great! We just made sure we stopped about every 1-2 hours.

I say keep up the good work; no sense in going backwards! Sure, you may have to make more stops, but that's ok. The importance is knowing when you gotta go, holding it, then being able to go on a toilet. Good luck!

Get a car potty.
Via Amazon, put in the search words "on the go potty."
We and all our friends, have these portable car potties.
It is a LIFE saver!
We have one in our van and in grandma's car.
It is useful and per when stuck in traffic, or places there are NO toilets or clean toilets.
Some kids/baby stores will have it.

BUT... also DO carry back-up diapers. And underwear, and clothing.
He will not be a 'rocket-scientist' about it, yet.
Kids have accidents. No kid is accident free.
Especially at this age.

Onward & upward!

Just plan to do a quick stop every hour or so.
Explain before you leave that he needs to communicate when he has to go--but schedule the stops anyway. Good luck! You're almost there!

I would ask him in words he will understand so he feels like he is making a big-boy decision.

Plastic pants over the underwear and waterproof pads for underneath him in case he poops, and plenty of pit stops, as often as you have him go at home and while out and about. Since he's doing so well he may actually surprise you!! : )

Plan on it being a 7-9 hour drive if you're not in diapers... or drive at night. You will be stopping a LOT
