It seems in the last year I've been having back to back yeast infections. I never have an infection until I got pregnant in 2008. After the pregnancy no issues until this past year. I went to the doc and there was a bacterial infection. We got that cleared and the yeast keep coming. I've done some reading and I've added garlic to my diet but don't see it's helping much. So I wondered what I can do to try to prevent these. I would appreciate advice from anyone and especially women with similar issues. What has worked for you? I'm tired of these damn lay still in bed creams and it's obviously affecting my sex life! TIA!

What can I do next?

I've heard good things from women who have cut out sugar from their diet. Cotton underwear, shower - not baths, avoid antibiotics, and get on a pro-biotic.

Regular probiotics should help. Skip the yogurt and get a good quality one with minimum 2 billion live organisms. Helps with may other things too! It can also be a dietary issue. You have to stop feeding the yeast. They feed on sugar! So anything that breaks down easily into sugar will make it worse: white bread/flour, alcohol, processed food. I recommend reading Clean by Dr Junger. You might try his cleanse or elimination diet for a time and just see if it helps. Then you will know if diet is a factor.

You have received some great advice. One crazy thing that starts a yeast infection for me every time I use it is Charmin toilet paper. I have to use certain t.p. Also, make sure you wear cotton panties that breath. Tight pants and pantyhose should be avoided, as well as scented pads and tampons.

Pregnancy, birth control pills, and antibiotic use can sometimes cause an imbalance of normal flora in the digestive tract leading to an overgrowth of yeast throughout the body. To restore balance you might try probiotics (New Chapter, Renew Life, Jarrow are good brands), adhering to a low sugar diet for a few weeks, and later adding caprylic acid or grapefruit seed extract. A website that has been helpful to me is: www.thecandidadiet.com. I do not endorse or recommend their products as I never purchased anything from them. I obtained the probiotics and antifungals from the local health food store. Don't expect an instant cure. Preventing yeast overgrowth is a lifestyle change.

Sorry to hear you've been dealing with yeast infections. Here's an article for natural ways to cure a yeast infection and get your body back in balance. I would also recommend:

* Drink plenty of water.
* Avoid any added sugars (to include juice, sugar drinks, processed foods, especially carbs(break down into sugars)
* Eat 2-3 raw garlic, crushed daily. (Garlic can be used as a suppository even...wrapped in gauze or with a string tied around it(google it first before putting a garlic clove inside you)
* Check out primal diet. It's a grain-free diet and you may find that focusing on whole foods during this time will help with this process of cleansing. Grains break down into sugar also so those foods feed the yeast.
* Take a probiotic daily to help balance your body/bacteria in your gut.
* Avoid taking antibiotics unless it is absolutely necessary.
* Consider taking a homeopathic remedy for yeast infections or candida. A natural health store can help you select a product. I've don't have experience with this particular product but I have used nativeremedies for my son and have been pleased with the results. http://www.nativeremedies.com/products/candidate-systemic...

It's possible that your husband could have yeast as well and be passing it back to you when you are having sex. You may want to encourage him get checked to rule out a yeast infection too.

I take pau d'arco capsules, you can get them at any vitamin shoppe, whole foods, or natural food store. It knocks mine out every time. I also use tea tree oil to help with the itching (mix it with a bit of olive oil before applying with a q-tip, as it is very strong on it's own). Out of desperation, I've swabbed inside with it as well (TMI I know) but it's helped :-) Tea tree oil kills any bacteria/yeast on contact. All the other advice was good on diet and eliminating sugar and esp. add probiotics in pill form (yogurt will take too long). I found that garlic actually made mine worse, as it is killing off the good bacteria that helps keep the yeast in check. So probiotics is key!!!

Another thing I haven't seen here that helps me when I feel it coming on is to wash/rinse the outside with diluted Apple Cider Vinegar (yes, the stuff you use for salad dressing, but make sure to use the "plain" one). I keep a bottle under my sink, and after intercourse, just fill a cup 90% with warm water and add a shot (10% or less) of the vinegar, and wash the outside. Super cheap, and restores the acidity (yeast can't grow in an acid environment). It should not burn (if it burns, you either use too much vinegar, or you have open sores, in which case, stop). Good luck.

We are now in humaworm parasite cleanse, they have the fungi cleanse, too. The review and testimonies are good, but we don't know the result yet. But, maybe you can give it a try. Try to put yoghurt on the vagina too. A friend tried that once and worked. Hang on and good luck.

Check your blood sugar and try to cut back on sweets and carbs. I have to take Diflucan pills for several days; the cream alone isn't enough. Love the Diflucan and it's generic! If a yeast infection doesn't have the typical bad smell, have a good gyn culture it to make sure it's not atypical yeast, which is much more resistant and needs more aggressive treatment.
