Old Milk in Sippy Cup. Can the Cup Be Saved?

I found an old sippy cup with milk in it under my bed. I don't know how long it was there, but I'm guessing awhile. The cup stunk. I hand washed it and than ran it through the dishwasher. It still smells. It is a lost cause? Does anyone have any tricks to get the smell out?

What can I do next?

My aunt, an RN, always says that smell is an indication that it is not clean. Bad smell equals bacteria. You can try boiling some water and soaking it for 20 minutes. Then move on to the vinegar or baking soda methods. My biggest concern would be for the lid...particularly the sippy spout. How could you be sure it was clean? It might be worth your peace of mind to just let this one go.

You can pour a mix of 1/2 water & 1/2 vinegar and let it soak for a few hrs. It does work. I've done this several times over the years.

would vinegar work to cut the smell?? or maybe tomato juice like you do for dogs that have been skunked. Just be sure there are no little nooks for bacteria to hid in.

I've had that happen a few times and what I always did was wash it several times but depending on the type of plastic it's made out of it may very well be a lost cause. I have also used bleach but that was more of an experiment to see if it would work, and it did but I didn't feel great about giving it back to my kid so I just threw it out.

happens to me all the time. i wouldnt use bleach.

vinegar does the trick. just soak with half vinegar and half water. fyi, vinegar is a natural disinfectant. you could use it on counters, in the wash, on highchair trays, cutting boards, ect. its amazing. when you use it, the item will smell like vinegar, then when it dries, it wont smell at all.

I hate those surprise cups and they always seem to be the ones with milk-never the juice or water cups. You can soak the cup in a bowl of hot water with a cup of vinegar added. When the cups get really bad, I soak overnight. then next day, the cups are fine after washing. Make sure you also soak the top and insert if there is one.

Soak it in a bowl of half bleach / half water. Then, of course wash it thoroughly. It will be like new.
