Ok moms, I hope you can help me with this. I just found out that I am pregnant with baby # 2!! Which is fantastic! I have, however, been dissatisfied with my OB-GYN and am searching for another. The problem with my doc arose when he made several insensitive remarks to me about my weight on more than one occaision. Yes, I am a plus- sized girl- but there is no reason to meanly comment on "those thighs... and that belly-" or to ask if my husband is overweight too and then comment "oh, but not like this?" as he waved his finger at me! So I guess what I am getting at, is that I am searching for a plus-sized friendly doctor. I need to feel comfortable with and confident in my doctor as I will be delivering via c-section again. It would also be nice to find a doctor where I felt like I was more than just a number. Know what I mean? Any suggestions ladies?? I appreciate it in advance!!

What can I do next?

I would recommend to find a hospital first, you can go on their hospital website and it pulls all the doctors names. Call them and interview the office over the phone, what kind of doctor is this? How long of a slot do you have with the doctor? Can I take pics in my delivery? Is the doctor sensitive to his/her patients? Do you have a emergency line? How long does it take to get a returned phone call? Who else will deliver my baby if my doctor can't? Tell them your issue a doctor like what you got is sometimes rare more than anything. I think sometimes people are afraid to voice they're opinion and tell the doctors what they are looking for in care. Remember YOU are hiring them to do you a service. I am 6mths pregnant and when I went in for my visit with the doctor I told her what my expectations were, and had a list of questions to make sure she was the right fit for me. She was very impressed and we have a very good understanding of what I expect so don't be shy open your mouth and speak up it's your pregnancy your baby your money. I guess the saying is true the older we get the wiser we are. This is our 4th baby.

Good Luck!

I have a slightly different opinion. Let me start by saying that I believe his behavior and bedside manner are poor at best (which is completely inexcusable).

OB/GYN has one of the highest malpractice rates because they care for patients for whom so many things can go wrong. Having had a similar experience with an Oncologist with less than savory interpersonal skills, I'd choose medical brilliance any day over bedside manner. Can you live with him being socially inept if he is providing the best care for you and your unborn child?

My guess is that his comments are stemming from new guidelines from the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology regarding the mother's weigh and risk to the fetal development. It still doesn't excuse the insensitivity of the comments.

HealthGrades.com and other services offer patient-generated reviews of physicians. I don't know what to make of them yet. You can also ask your Primary Care Provider who else they may recommend - doctors tend to know who's reputable and who is not.

Good luck and best wishes with your pregnancy.

I'd say find an OB office with a midwife and start seeing the midwife!

J.,

Try Dayton OB/GYN. I see Dr. Thesing and I like him. I know several people who see different doctors in the practice and I have never heard negitives from them - and these comments come from people of all sizes. They have offices in Centerville and at Miami Valley Hospital. I believe they have privledges at Kettering also.

Best of luck on baby #2.
