My beautiful 6 year old daughter has been eating those things out of her nose (I'm trying not to be gross). I hadn't realized she was doing this till I caught her the other night. She thinks it's funny. I've tried to explain how germy and nasty they are but its not getting thru. Any ideas on how to get this habit stopped?

What can I do next?

TMI alert!!!

Don't read if you're squeamish.

My mom worked as a school nurse and would tell kids that the substance in your nose is a bodily waste product, just like poop is a bodily waste product...so in effect they're eating poop!! Maybe that will convice her to stop.

The best suggestion I was given was by a kindergarden teacher. Everytime you catch them with a finger near or in their nose, you make them wash their hands. It gets old real quick for them and it really works. It is the best way I know to really teach them that bugers are yucky and we dispose of them the proper way, in the sink or in a kleenex. Good luck! =)

My three you old dd started doing that and we told her that worms will grow in her belly. We were in the car when we told her and by the time we got home she made herself sick from thinking about it and threw up!!! She had not done it since until yesterday she was telling me her tummy hurt and I finally realized she had eaten them and was thinking about the worms so she was making herself sick again!!!! Of course vitamins cure everything in my household so once she eat her daily vitamins they died!!! Maybe it will work for your daughter I know it worked on mine!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I've tried everything in the book for this situation, everthing the moms posted below and then some. My 4 yr old (then 3) learned it from her cousin. Anyhow, It just got too much for me, nothing was working. One day I caught her doing it, I spanked her hand and put her on time out. She hasn't done it since. She now asks for some tissue each time.
