Hello Moms,

I'm starting nursing school soon so I'm looking to downsize from a Kia van to a "normal" size vehicle. I'm wanting something better on gas mileage but able to accomdate my kiddos. I would prefer a SUV over a car. I have slightly challenged credit. Any suggestions or ideas? I would be greatly appreciate. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys for all the great advise and information. I've decided after checking with a few dealerships that I might as well keep my van due to the "upside down" amount that would be added to the new vehicle. I guess by the time I finished with school my current car will be paid for then I can treat myself with a new car after graduation. Thanks again!

I took my challenged credit to Vandergriff Honda. They got me a good low mileage Mazda. It's great on gas and I love it. The interest rate was high and they didn't treat me well at all, but they got me financed and sold me a great car. I also found some good low mileage cars with Chacon Motors. They didn't care about the credit, but the cars are a little overpriced and you have to pay them off in 3 years, so the payments are high.

Hey D.

How old are your kids and do they need car seats or boosters? From what I have heard, a van and SUV are about the same in gas mileage, with many SUV's being more expensive. I have a GM van that I love but am looking to upgrade in the spring either to a newer van or a SUV. But the ages of your kids will make a difference in what vehicle might suit you better.

I would try something like Charleton Motors in Lewisville (on 407, just west of 35). They specialize in gently used cars, so you get the benefit of the lower price, but still get a reliable vehicle. He'll even look for cars for you, if you have something specific in mind, then check the car mechanically to verify that it doesn't have any issues. He's got kids, so I'm sure he'll be able to give you tips on that, and obviously, he can let you know which cars are most efficient when it comes to mileage. Ask for Gary...
