New to This Area and Desperately Need a Good Hairdresser That's Affordable

Hi all. As you know, sometimes being mom, means putting my own needs last. I have let my hair go for waaayyy too long! One of the problems, is that I just don't know where to go around here for a good highlight and cut. Some of the places I've checked out are crazy-expensive, and I'm not willing to drive to Seattle just to get my hair done (especially with gas prices these days). If anyone can make a good recommendation, I would really appreciate it. Thanks to you all.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the great suggestions. Can you believe that most of the recommendations were a good distance from my house? I would've had to drive at least 10-20 miles for most. With gas prices, baby-sitter time, and feeling that need to be close to home, I ended up going with the Fircrest recommendation, b/c it was closest to me. Apparently Norma at La Chic must be pretty good, b/c it's taking me a month just to get an appointment with her! If anyone is interested in follow-up on Norma's styling, please let me know. My appointment isn't until the end of this month, but I'd be happy to let you know how it turns out.

A big thank you to all of you who gave recommendations. It really is a big help to get friendly word-of-mouth advice, since I really don't know much about this area - love this website! Best wishes to all.

When I lived in Tacoma, I absolutely LOVED Foxfire Salon off 19th St. Here's their website. www.foxfiresalon.com
I haven't been there in a while (we've since moved to Olympia) but never got a bad haircut, wax, etc. there and would highly recommend it. I always left feeling a little bit pampered, which is important to us moms!

I love La Chic in Fircrest. I am not sure where you live, but it is in Emerson Court on the corner of Orchard and 40th. I have seen Norma (the owner) for over 10 years. She is super. Their number is ###-###-####. Good luck!

Well, I'm not sure what's affordable to you...my hairdresser is my one indulgence...she's about $50 and she's at Gene Juarez in Tacoma mall, her name is Drew. She does a great job and she's really nice and funny. I've been going to her for four years, I had let my hair grow out for my wedding and couldn't wait to chop it off when that was all over!! She's kept it looking great ever since. Good luck, I know that can be frustrating!

Hi A., I'm not sure where you live, but if in the Puyallup area, Shannon Shaver does beautiful work. She owns her own shop near her home, is a mom herself, has a fabulous personality and is very reasonable (around $20 for haircut, more for color, perms, etc.). Here is her phone number if you're interested in checking her out ###-###-####. Good luck with your search...as a new mom I definitely understand about the time and money!

Hi A., Well I am not sure where you are located. In lakewood on Bridgeport there is a salon. Salon Prodigy. They are great! They have expanded so much and their one year anniversary is coming around the corner too. The owner's name is rebecca. They are awesome people and it was a great experiance for me. It was a little more expensive than just going to supercuts to get a hair cut. But because I am getting married in a month and Salon Prodigy is doing my hair for the wedding, figure i better go with them. Their website is www.salonprodigy.net they have their prices on there. Also www.myspace.com/salonprodigy. Check them out. Good luck!

I live in UP and drive down to Olympia to get mine cut by Teresa at The Statement. She's been doing my hair for 14 years and is simply the best there is. I'd even moved out of WA for a few years and scheduled hair appointments when I would come home to visit. She is that good. She is right on State Street and works out of the basement of her home. Odd, but it is a nice little salon.

If you are in Tacoma I've heard fantastic things about Embellish. They are down town and a girlfriend of mine gets her hair cut there. She loves it. I hear it is quite reasonably priced.

If you are close to the Parkland area I have found a great little salon owned by Brenda Sweeney called Tuscany Salon. Womens cut is 20$ and she does coloring and other services that are very reasonably priced. The salon is located off Pacific Ave ###-###-####.

If you don't mind driving to Graham, my hairdressers name is Carrie and she's been doing my husband's hair since beforewe were married almost 8 years ago. I started going to her after we were married and now she does my son's hair too (she did his first hair cute). We love her and both my mom and mother-in-law go to her too! She is very reasonably priced and a lot of fun. Her business is Carrie's Hair Studio and the phone number is ###-###-####. Depending on where in University Place you live, it's only about a 20 - 30 minute drive. I hope you check her out, she's the only one I trust! Gene Juarez is waaaayyyyy too expensive!!! Good luck!

Not sure where you are located but I have a great hairdresser. Her name is Dainie Mulligan and she is great. She runs a salon out of her home so she can stay home with her kids. She is on south hill in Puyallup near the sunrise development. She charges $20 for wash/cut/style. Not sure about color but a friend of mine had hers done and she paid $100 for wash/cut/style and 3 color and she has long hair. So she is pretty reasonable. Her phone is ###-###-####. good luck. If you are in the Edgewood/Milton area Devine style is really good also. they charge $35 for a wash/cut/style. they are right on meridian on north hill.
