Hi, I'm not even in New York yet, but will be relocating there this winter. Are there any homeschoolers out there that want to share their advice for homeschooling in general or in New York specifically?

What can I do next?

Welcome to New York, ballston spa is a great area and your going to truly enjoy downtown. I live just outside the area and a work-at-home mom and have 2 boys. I am not familiar with homeschool or any programs but i have met several people that do homeschool and said there was a good network in this area. If i can find out any information, i will send it your way

Hi C.,
I personally am not a homeschooling mom, but a wonderful woman I work with is. I relayed your suitation to her and this is what she responded with. She is also living in Ballston Spa so let me know if you need anything else and I will ask her.

I'm answering for M., I am a homeschooling mom in Ballston Spa. First thing... Relax. This district is really easy to work with. We have a support group with other homeschooling families (about 100) and are linked to the group statewide. The link to our website is http://www.cliftonpark.org/ecommunity/saratogaleah/benefi... . We have support meetings on the first Thursday of every month. We share curriculum, have people who are more than willing to mentor, and we share resources. I am currently working and have two friends who help out with my daughter. Do not contact the school district for advice, contact us (or another support group) first. The school district doesn't know the regulations.
Signed, Patti

As an additional note C., the main school year meeting for the support group is next month, the first thrusday in August, from 7-9 PM at the Greater Grace Community Church in Malta, NY. If you will be here then, may be worth popping into. Children are welcome and childcare during the meeting is available. If you are going to be in the direct Ballston Spa school district, the person you would need to contact is Susan Stoya. From what I hear, she is the only one who will be able to help you exactly as you need.

Hi C. - welcome to the area (early). I live in Waterford, which is 15 mins south of Ballston Spa. There is so much to do in the area and a lot of local homeschooling groups around. You can also check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/capitaldistrictnymoms/ -- this is a group of moms just in the Capital District area.

Best of luck with the move

Hi C.!

I live in Amsterdam-not too far off. We are home schoolers. Two of mine will be starting 9th grade and K (and in between I have a 3rd grader and a 7th grader).

I know some other people in the area, particularly Ballston Spa who home school. My lives there and her youngest is the same age as my K'er. You can email me privately and I can perhaps find her info and you can get in touch with her.
