Need Suggestions for Toddler Sleeping Arrangements

My son is 17 months old, and is big for his age (in the 95th percentile for height and weight). He doesn't really fit in his pack 'n play anymore, but he's not yet old enough to sleep in a big boy bed. Have any of you experienced the same problem? And what did you do when you traveled? We're coming up on the holidays when we travel quite a bit and I don't know whether to try a sleeping bag on the floor, or to buy an inflatable mattress for him... I'm just looking for some suggestions from moms who've been through it before. Thanks in advance for you advice!

What can I do next?

If we are in a place where it would be ok for him to sleep on the floor, I would use a Mat...kind of like a sleeping bag but with a little bit of cushion under it. I had to buy one for him for his daycare. Otherwise, he usually sleeps with us.

One Step Ahead has a travel bed (I think it's called a peapod bed) that is supposed to fit kids until they are 6 years old. We have the little kid version of it and have LOVED it... very light and easy to set up... like an aerobed for kids and yet your child can be zipped in so they aren't making unexpected middle of the night visits :)

One Step Ahead has GREAT options for travel beds for children of all ages. I would definitely check out their website.

Just a quick word of caution if you choose to use the sleeping bag: Please have your child sleep ON TOP of the sleeping bag with a blanket over him, rather than inside the sleeping bag. I heard a warning once, many years ago, about little ones getting too far inside the bag, and not being able to get out. I've never heard of any specific incidents, but better safe than sorry.

My son went into a twin bed at 17 or 18 months. We never had any trouble, and he has always moved around a lot in his sleep (still does). You can put a gate at the door if you want to keep him in his room but leave the door open so he doesn't feel isolated. Since our daughter is our last, we haven't taken her out of the crib yet (she is 22 months), but I'm sure she would be fine if we did.

In September we spent the weekend at friends' and forgot our pack-n-play. They had a big flat pillow - maybe 2 or 3 inches thick(I think it may have originally been sold as a dog bed) that she slept on. They also had a kid's play tent that fit over top of it, so we put that over it. She did great!! I think the bed alone or a sleeping bag on the floor would have worked just fine.

My eldest son went into a twin bed at 15 months, he slept much better. We put one of those bed gate things on so he wouldn't fall off the bed. It all worked out fine. As far as traveling is concerned, they have a toddler blow up bed thing. Have fun,.

Little ones at that age seem to move around a lot when they sleep, so I recommend surrounding him with pillows wherever he wakes up. There are some great kid sleeping bags (which would make it easier for you if you are traveling to several places, for consistency's sake) but if he's anything like my daughter, he'll probably wind up out of it and splayed on the floor. Just make sure that any hard surfaces (nightstands, etc) are protected with pillows. He'll be fine I'm sure ;)

My son also went into a twin bed at 15 months. I love it and so does he. I put up a rail and put big floor pillows at the foot of the bed. He slept through the night the very first night. I'm a strong believer that the earlier the better for transitions, because the younger they are, the more adaptable they are to changes. As far as while you're away from home, I have an inflatable mattress that I put against a wall, and on the other side, I stack up blankets or pillows so he can't roll off.

I have two boys and when I travel, my younger one sleeps in a "nest" of blankets on the floor. We have tried inflatable beds but my son falls off them or otherwise doesn't sleep well because they squeak when he moves around. Then we decided to throw a big fluffy comforter on the floor and he curled up on it and slept for his country. Good luck.

I had the same problem with my daughter. At home I used a day bed and turned it around so the open part was facing the wall. As far as traveling, I would either put a sleeping bag on the floor or make sure she was in a bed that was up against a wall.

We bought the MY COT from One Step Ahead and my daughter used it at 18 months when we travel and still does now and she is turning 3. You can get it cheaper at WalMart.
