Probably nothing. Hair alleles are one of the more complicated bits of genetics. People from the same family can have radically different hair from each other depending on how their DNA tells hair to grow (says the only corkscrew ringlet curls in my own family of over 40 people). No matter how much I may WANT my sister's or dad's or uncle's hair... it's just not going to happen. I've had to learn to deal with what I've got.

That said... the single most common cause for hair problems is malnutrition (including dieting). Hair is 100% protein bound together with hydrogen bonds. If your diet is lacking in protein your body will skimp your hair and nails before it starts eating your own muscles. Vitamins and minerals help the follicles and oil production in your scalp, which can help hair's overall health, but protein is what the hair shaft is made out of. If you don't have enough protein in your diet, your hair will suffer.

The best thing I ever did as far as my own hair is concerned is to link up with an awesome stylist who really helped me with making MY hair the best it could be... instead of how I wanted it to be. I've also learned how to relax it, blow it out, and in other ways deal with it in a way that makes me happy. It'll never be the hair I want, but it's the hair I've got... so learning to make the best of it has been a big blessing.

Well, all you can do, first of all, is embrace the hair you have and find a way to make it work best for you.
My daughter has thick, curly hair that grows to her hiney.
She didn't get that from me.
I can wish for it all day, but it's not going to happen.
There are things you can do to make your hair healthier so it doesn't break off and that can help with growth. Be sure you're not over processing or drying it out.
There really are darling shorter hairstyles and maybe you need to consult with a great stylist who can help with complimenting your facial shape, etc.
So many people with curly thick hair wish they had straight thinner hair and vice versa.
You are beautiful the way you are!
Your sisters might wish they had YOUR hair!

Work with what you've been blessed with.
Everytime I think I'm having a bad hair day, I think of my co-worker who has no hair because of her chemo treatments.

Embrace what you've got!
Best wishes!

I've researched hair a lot, since I have thinnish hair that has a tendency to fall out. There's probably nothing you can do, as Riley said, below. It's mostly genetics, and the hair you were born with it what you've got.

Other than malnutrition (very uncommon in America), as Riley suggested, the only thing I know for sure that can cause thinning hair is low thyroid. So have your thyroid tested to rule that out. You can try using a biotin supplement also.

I'm a stylist. There really isn't anything you can do to make your hair grow long and thick like your sisters' hair. You can eat healthy, drink lots of water, take supplements, get lots of rest... all things that will produce a healthy scalp and healtheir hair, but this wont' change the number of hair shafts on your head, noe the thicknes of them which determines how much hair and how thick it is.

Instead, play up what you have. You can use great conditioning treatments, get glazes to make your color shine, get a nice graduated haircut to add in volume and use styling aids and round brushing with the dryer for volume.

There are plenty of cute styles that would work with your hairtype. Seek those styles out instead of being sad about something that isn't totally possible, and you will finally be comfortable with who you are.

My hair shaft is thin and didn't grow past my shoulders. I learned early on to accept my hair as it is. What we get is governed by our genetics which we can't change. I learned that my hair looked more full and healthy if I kept it short. If it gets much past my ear lobes in length is looks thin and flat. I suggest you go to an experienced stylist and find a style that will work with your hair.

Now, I'm getting less hair and am wondering how to cover the top of my head. lol That too is genetic. One aunt let her grow and made sausage curls placed on top. My hair shaft is so thin that won't work for me, not that I'd want sausage curls anyway. lol

Have you had your thyroid checked? Your thyroid can cause hair loss, thinning and lack of growth. Also, there are other medical conditions that can cause hair problems. Most of them are hard to detect. Also, different water, shampoo, hair spray, can cause serious hair problems. Blow drying and hair straightners can also cause hair loss, thinning, etc...Your diet can also determine your hair growth and hair thinning. If I were you I would go do my research on line. You can find things to eat and not to eat. Different hair products that are better for you. I used to have long beautiful hair and now it is thin and takes forerver to grow. I found out I have hypothyroidism a few years ago. The first medicine made my hair worse. Now it is growing better but I still lose a lot.

Dear T.,

Experts agree good nutrition helps everything! As some moms responded, our bodies may not appear malnurished but on a cellular level we may not be eating the proper balance of foods for good health.

I am a wellness educator for a whole food supplement call Juice Plus+. Have you heard of us?

some say this is a wives tale- but I did this has a young teenager & it worked.

Have you hair cut (trimmed) on the growing moon (phases just before full moon)

Not blowing off, nutrition, genetics etc. In regards to genetics- you genes just may have mixed up differently than your sisters'
