Hi Ladies - I made the rookie mistake of volunteering to make something that I've never made before, Pink Popcorn. I'm supposed to make it for my son's school party this Friday and have tried some of the online recipes unsuccessfully. The idea is to have a "popcorn station" where the kids come to my table and make their own pink popcorn. If I can't find a way to make this happen than maybe I can make it at home myself and just bring it in. Either way, I haven't had any luck. I would love to make these as healthy as possible since everything else will be sugar filled. I don't mind a little sugar just not alot if I can avoid it. PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I decided that the easiest and most successful way for me was to buy the food dye spray from Micheal's and use the bags of popcorn that I could microwave once I got to the party. Thanks Again!

What about making regular popcorn, and then getting valentines type stickers, markers, etc. for the kids to decorate the bags that the popcorn will go in? I like to buy the white-lunch bags for such things. Aslo, ziplock baggies are great too.

I lived in another country where all their popcorn was served sweet, so I've seen all kinds of different colors! What they would do is use presweetened kool-aid (or jello would work). It doesn't take much, especially if the kids are going to participate. I would take their serving and put it in a bag for them to shake, along with a scoop of whatever powder colorant you choose (I would practice first, just so you understand the ratio of popcorn-to-powder), spritz the popcorn with some water, put it all in a bag and shake, shake, shake! I've seen pink, green, blue, etc. Fun activity!
Try putting the popcorn in a baggie with some sugar free koolaid or jello mix. You may need to give the popcorn a spritz with some of the spray butter that is on the market first to get it to stick. I'd try without first and don't spray while in the bag or the powder will stick to the bag. Hope this helps.
Why dont you try to get a can of pink air brush food coloring? They have these little cans of food coloring that you just spray on. I use them all the time in my cake decorating and they do not have sugar or anything. Just food coloring you spray. Just make sure you have some paper towels because if you spray too long in one spot, it will start running like any other type of spray paint. My only other suggestion was to add the food coloring to the butter like the other mother said... but that might get a tad messy and you would have to do that before hand. 6 cups popped popcorn
2 1/2 Tbls. butter
1 tsp. sugar free strawberry Jello
In small saucepan over low heat, melt butter, cool slightly. Quick stir in Jello and immediately pour over popcorn, tossing to coat all pieces.
I love the jello-popcorn balls... However I am not sure how you would involve the kids in the making process (station wise) However you could make them up early and then have them wrapped in cling wrap and at that point let the kiddos decorate the wrapped ball. With a little cone hat and something for eyes, nose and a mouth. Or leave them unwrapped and hand each child a popcorn ball and let them put redhots on for eyes and nose (or conversation hearts) and a little piece of precut sting licorice for a mouth, then wrap it for them.

Colored Popcorn Balls
12 cups popped popcorn
1.5 oz flavored gelatin (any color Jello powder)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
Put gelatin, sugar and syrup into a pot. Heat & stir to dissolve. Bring to a rolling boil. Pour over popcorn in a large bowl (you can lightly salt popcorn first if you like). Stir until all popcorn is coated. Form into balls with lightly buttered hands (I spray with Pam!). Makes about a dozen popcorn balls.
Use whatever color suits the occasion. For Halloween use orange Jello. You can put `faces' on your popcorn balls with candy. For Christmas make a bowl full of red & green balls. For Easter use pastel colors.

I would try to find an organic substitute for red food coloring. So many, many children have reactions to this.
The Briitish store in Va. Beach may be able to offer suggestions, because they are tending to lean towards organic substitutes in England. Good luck!

The only thing I can think of is the spray food coloring. Could you pop the popcorn at home and then bring it to school and have the kids spray their popcorn?? It might be too messy of an idea, but that's what I would suggest. You can find the spray food coloring at any store that sells cake decorating/coloring supplies (ie. Michael's, not sure about grocery stores).
