Hi moms out there,
two questions today -
1. need to transition my little one (2 1/2 year old daughter) into a toddler bed (baby #2 on his way - due in May). Any advice on what kind of bed to get? Where to get it?
one of my friends recommended Ikea, but I thought it was not pretty enough for my daughter - do you need the bells and whistles of attached bed rails, etc?

Question #2 - we bought a booster seat for her, which she eats very well in (as well as a 2 1/2 year old will eat - lol!!). The straps are small, however - my daughter is a petite 2 1/2 year old, and the straps can't be loosened any more. I have tried her in her own little table and chair set, but I like her to join us at the table for dinner. She will sit at my island in a high stool for breakfast and lunch, but she doesn't always do good sitting. Lately, she will stand up on the stool and ask (repeatedly!!) - "Can I do this, Mommy?" (the answer is always - "no - thank you for asking, that is not allowed!". I have seen the Stokke High Chair and have heard it is good for kids for a long time, helps them to do good sitting at the table, and you can buckle them in (which I think is necessary for my DD most of the time!) but it is so expensive I am wondering if other options are better that I just haven't thought of. We did try a traditional booster at a restaurant, but she was just too wiggly - I am afraid if it is not strapped onto a chair she will wiggle right out of it.

Also - I was using the Diaper doublers at night and loved them, but they no longer make them. What else do you all use at night to help little ones stay dry? Thanks for any input you all can give - I love this website!!

Thanks,
E.

I don't know how much this will help you but my daughter is 21 months old and always slept in the same room as me (not by choice) I was living with my mom when I had her and now that I am married and have my own place she has her own room !!!!!! :) yay! ha ha but she never liked her crib so I just skipped the toddler bed and got a twin size bed. She has a whole princess room and loves it (very pretty and girlie) and it is a BIG bed to her so she now thinks she is a BIG girl kind of reverse psycology in a way. Also it saves you from having to buy another bed in a couple of years or less time if she grows fast! Hope this helps a little :)

I don't think you have to buy anything fancy with attached rails - if you can put the bed against a wall, then you can just buy one of those folding bed rails for the open side. Resale shops like Children's Orchard often have them.

You could consider skipping the toddler bed entirely and go to a twin if you have the above rail. However, since you have another one on the way, you'll get double usage out of a toddler bed.

You could take your daughter to buy something special for her new bed - new sheets or some throw pillows in fun shapes or cartoon characters. Those also help take up some of the extra space in the new huge bed so she doesn't feel like she's swimming in it - those twin beds look awfully big after a crib! Those big bolster pillows are really popular in college dorms so you can often find them in places like Target and Sears - you can put one against the wall side and help her feel snug, but they'll also last a long while and can be used for other purposes.

ON the chair issue, friends of mine bought each of their kids a high chair at Mill Stores - unfinished - and painted it themselves. It has arms and a footrest, but no tray. It's wood like the other grown-up chairs so the kids like it - it doesn't feel kiddie style. The child could even pick the color or put some decals on it (maybe letters with her name, or her favorite animal or character - however much you want to engage her in those choices. If it's her special big-girl chair, she might sit in it. You can push it right up to the table so she really can't stand up in it - her legs are under the table, just like yours, and there really isn't too much room to wiggle around. If some restraint is still necessary, you could use some kind of a belt and secure it at the back of the chair where she can't reach the buckle and fiddle with it! My friends' daughter is 2 and she just loves her chair, so they don't even need a belt of any kind.

Good luck!

My daughter turned two at the end of November. We have a new baby coming in August. I wanted enough time away from her crib. If I had to give you one suggestion, is to do the big girl bed thing once. Don't get her use to a toddler bed and then have to switch to a twin bed months, or a year later. You'll have enough on your plate. We bought our daughter, from Jordan's Furniture, a twin size bed with a metal frame. She was able to pick out her sheets, blankets etc. I wanted to buy the headboard, matching furniture etc. but then I realized she doesn't need all of that now. I think it would be fun to do that when she is old enough to say I like this one. Good luck with everything

I can comment on the Diaper Doubler question. You can use Poise or Depends instead. I have heard that works. I personally use the Huggies overnight diapers though.
