Need Developmental Pediatrician in Arlington/Mansfield Area

I'm looking for a Developmental Pediatrician in the areas mentioned or the Fort Worth area. My four year old was diagnosed with ADHD at the Child Study Center in Fort Worth. Although I believe the diagnosis to be correct, I believe we have other issues (anxiety disorder and/or sensory integration disorder)and would like a second opinion.
I'm also looking for treatment therapy as I basically feel I was only given two choices---medicate or don't medicate.
Thanks for any recommendations you can offer.

What can I do next?

Developmental pediatricians are rare as hens' teeth. You are not likely to find one in Arl./Mans. area. The best of the best is at the neurology clinic at Dallas Children's. Her name is Dr. Pat Evans, and she does not medicate unless she feels it is absolutely necessary. She also knows lots about other therapy alternatives, and she is not reluctant to refer to them. The down side is that you have to wait months to get in to see her.

You are wise to consider other options. You need to read:
Smart Moves, by Carla Hannaford
Right Brained Children in a Left Brained World, Jeffrey Freed and Laurie Parsons – This
book will change the way you think about your child!
Taking Charge of ADHD, Russell Barkley, M.D.
ADHD, The Great MisDiagnosis, Julian Stuart Haber, M.D.
Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with
Sensory Integration Issues, Lindsey Biel and Nancy Peske

Barkley makes a case for meds. The others lean toward alternatives.

Please research and consider lots of other possibilities. Feel free to contact me through our web site, www.TXSpecialKids.org, for more information and ideas.

Blessings,
P.

Hi W.,

My pediatrician doesn't market herself as a "developmental ped" but she does see a lot of special needs kids and she is the most thorough doctor I think I have ever visited. Her name is Dr. Karen Pilgrim-King. She is in Arlington on Pioneer Parkway at Davis. Phone number is ###-###-####. Tell her I sent you - she'll laugh. I have sent all my girlfriends there.

For therapy, I can recommend myself. I am licensed in Yoga for the Special Child, which is an individual therapy for children with special needs. I have worked (am working) with a 5 yo with sensory integration problems. It can be a wonderful tool for the child. For more about me, see http://yogapotential.com/

Good luck.
Peace and Joy,
M.

This is not exactly what you are asking for but I take my son the "Little Giant Steps." He is evaluated every 4 months and we are given exercises to do daily that help with his neuro development.

Check out their web site at http://www.littlegiantsteps.com/index.php

They offer a 2 hour DVD that explains the NeuroDevelopment Approach. It is very informative.

I'll cut and paste what is said about the DVD:

Jan Bedell, an Educator and Certified Neurodevelopmentalist, has been tested and tempered by the fire of experience, as she took the journey with her daughter to teach her how to function academically to her potential. She found the way to help her child succeed and since 1992, she's been leading the way for others through The Neurodevelopmental Approach. She knows first hand what it feels like to have a child with potential, yet see them languish in a world that seems unavailable. She's found the secret, now it is yours, as well.

Join Jan in a two hour seminar. This information-filled seminar will give you an understanding of The Neurodevelopmental Approach and how the neurodevelopment of your child can be assured by you knowing what to look for in normal development, learn to test for visual and auditory processing ability and many more skills she will teach you.

Learning Challenges don’t have to last a lifetime.

There is hope for your child, always. If your child has received a label of Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, Brain Injured, Autistic, Down Syndrome, PDD, Asperger's, Cerebral Palsy, William's Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Learning Disabled, or any other of the myriad of labels abounding, there is hope. And we teach parents and educators what they can do to change the course of a child's academic experience.

Most diagnoses come with specific lists of what to expect and what the future holds. Then, our children are labeled according to that diagnosis. Don't believe them! What the future holds is not something that can be predetermined or preset. What the future holds is based upon the various opportunities presented to the child or individual.

Watch, listen and learn. You are the key to discovering the true potential in your child's abilities.

Sincerely, D. Rhoades

I am so glad I saw this post! I just took my daughter, who has ADHD and I believe anxiety as well, to a new doctor yesterday.

After seeing a few different doctors I can tell you he is the best! He has a total approach and looks at everything. They have treatment therapy and the therapist is very nice as well.

I am in South Grand Prairie, so it is a bit of a drive but not too bad (just dont go in rushhour). It is a straight shoot down 360 and exit Glade Rd.

I just can not praise thier mindset enough, it is a total health approach. Not just, here is some medicine see you in a few months.

We are doing some tests next week, then we will start therapy and I am hoping for her to be off medication soon.

Note: They are very open with YOUR choice to medicate or not and can give you a game plan with or without medication.

Good luck!
