In need of some advice. Gavin (almost 9 months old) is in the stage where he's eating every 2 hrs. and eating like a little pig, But he is getting to where he wants to feed himself. I have tried giving him a spoon, but it gets in the way. And i have tried giving him finger foods to eat with his meal, but he just eats those and wont eat what i am feeding him. Also, he is a crab when its time to feed him.Anything helps. Thanks! ♥

What can I do next?

I'm assuming based on previous posts that your son is 8-9 months old? Just let him pick up & eat whatever he can manage and let him grasp/try to use a spoon....right now it's all about developing the pincher grip & letting him practice--his milk is his primary nutrition so let him have at it and brace for the mess!

You don't say how old Gavin is, but if he's eating solid foods, try this....sit down to eat with him with a plate of food, put the food in front of you...you eat the food first! They can be WAY more interested in what YOU'RE eating than what you put in front of them. Eating habits and preferences change dramatically and often the first few years, so as long as he's getting enough (and the nutrition he needs from BM or formula or a supplement), I wouldn't worry....Also cutting teeth can make them dislike something they used to love, taste buds are developing as well, good luck! (btw, I've always loved the name Gavin)

try feeding him what you want him to eat, then when you are finished let him top off with finger foods.

Hello! I see that your son is almost 9 months old ( It's right next to his name people!!) But he's at the stage in his life now where he wants to try feeding himself. Let him try, no matter what kind of mess he'll make. He won't learn if he doesn't practice! :) My son is almost 1, and he's an "eater" too! He's like a goldfish, sometimes I don't know where he's putting it!! So, let him feed himself, cut up his meal in small pieces and let him eat it with his hands. (Are you feeding him baby food in the jar or soft solids?) Learning how to use a spoon is complicated for a 9 month old. I give one to my son and he holds it with one hand and eats with the other! lol Give him time and remember, the mess he'll make will be worth it when he's eating with a fork or spoon by himself. I hope I helped and good luck to you and Gavin! <3

This is a magical age for him. Everything is finger foods. Messy, but a crucial step in self feeding and general discovery. I would still put a spoon on his tray, but he wont master the spoon til ????? (My 2 year old still hasn't mastered the spoon). Make finger foods "the meal". Variety and nutrition are your responsibility. Leave the rest to him. A plastic bag, sheet, or a regular sheet under the tray helps with messes. Have fun with it !!!

Keep feeding him every 2 hours with whatever he will eat/take. Bottle of milk, formula, Gerber baby food, finger food, baby cereal in a bowl. He's still little, his tummy is still small and most likely he is going through a growth spurt. My son did this until a year. He's now 17 mos old and doesn't eat as often or as much (growth spurts have leveled off). Give him whatever he WILL eat and this stage will soon pass too. Good luck and hang in there. It gets easier. Messier but easier.
