Need a Safe Home-remedy for VERY Greasy Hair Due to Baby Oil

Dawn dish soap usually works. You may need a couple of washes. The foaming one is really good on greasy things. Another, thing to try is baking soda. It absorbs some of the oils. Put it on the hair, let it set as long as you can, comb it out then wash with the dish soap. Another thought is to use clarifying shampoo. It is used to get greasy, over-producted hair clean.

You might try cornstarch or baby powder. I've lightly dusted my hair with it when it was looking greesy and motherhood prevented me from showering.

Maybe try Dawn dish soap. They had that one commercial that they were using it to clean the a duck that was covered in crude oil. It should be gentle enough and I know it works great on oily dishes.

I don't have a remedy for you, but I just wanted to send a quick response regarding your children getting into the baby oil. I'm sure you've already taken precautions to make sure they don't get into the baby oil again, but I just wanted to send a word of warning. If injested, baby oil can be extremely dangererous and even fatal. If a child injests it and some gets into their lungs there can be very serious complications. I'm sure the greasy hair is annoying... but it could've been much worse. I'm not trying to make you feel bad, just wanted to let you know. As far as the greasy hair... I would use the dish soap again. Hope you get the grease out soon!!!

I have a couple of suggestions for your situation. The first suggestion is to use baby powder on the hair and then shampoo it out, also apply astringent to the scalp. You can help this oil removal by applying a homemade astringent directly to your scalp. I would suggest applying a mixture of equal parts witch hazel and mouthwash, with cotton pads, to the scalp only. The witch hazel acts as an astringent and the mouthwash has antiseptic properties, he says. If your scalp is very oily you can do this each time you shampoo until the situation disappears! It looks like you got a lot of responses so I hope something has already worked. My daughter once put almost an entire tub of Vaseline all over her body, including masses in her hair. I tried the powders, repeated shampooing, blow drying, and everything else. She just ended up with chunky clumps. It was still greasy. I finally emailed Vaseline and they told me to use peanut butter. It seemed bizarre but it worked like a charm! I would think Vaseline and baby oil would be similar. By the way, I took pictures of the whole process... especially the white powder hair. It is great for the scrapbooks:)

How about flour? I've never tried it in hair, but flour is awesome for soaking up big veggie oil spills on the floor or counter. It might make more of a mess though....Try it outside? :)

Hey I am not sure what else might help but a tip I read about that helps that oily dirty look when you cannot wash their hair right away is take baby powder in your hands, just a litlte and rub it all over in their hair. My little one has really fine hair but a lot and people are always touching it which makes it look greasy dirty. This is a temp. fix but it does help a lot. It soaks up some of the grease.

During the Valdez oil spill in Alaska, environmentalists used DAWN dish detergent to remove crude oil from numerous wildlife, for example: otters and geese, etc. It seemed to work for them so it's worth a try. GOOD LUCK! S. D.

Try Dawn dish soap. You will be amazed at the results.
When you get to many bubbles from scrubbing you can get them down the drain with cold water. Really.

I used a lot of baby oil on my Emily to help with cradle cap. It took 2 baths with just regular johnson's baby shampoo and it came out and her hair was nice and soft again. If that doesn't work, Dawn dish soap. If you remember, in Cincinnati on I-74 a few years back a semi-truck hauling pig lard & grease overturned. The truck broke open and the highway was cover in this oil & grease. They used dawn dishsoap and cleaned it right up. Before that, the highway had been shut down for like 4 days.

Did not read all the entries, so don't know if I am repeating anything said already. Some suggestions:
Apple Cider Vinagar
Prell Shampoo
Dawn Dishwashing soap
White Rain shampoo

When I was in the Army we used White Rain shampoo to strip the wax build up off the floors.. b/c of that I would never dream of using it on my hair unless of course I was in a situation like you, then I would not think twice about using it.

One thing you might try is lemon juice as a rinse. use about 2 tablespoons at a time, wet the hair, and then work the lemon juice into the hair, let it set for a few minutes and then rinse it out with warm water. It might take a few applications. If this doesn't work, you can always call your local hair salon, they might be able to advise you on something else.

Mix a little baking soda with their shampoo. Good luck!

My daughter put a ton of that desitin (diaper rash cream) in her hair. I used the neutrogena shampoo in her hair. You can buy it at walmart and sometimes cvs or walgreens. Suave also works well, but make sure you get a really good conditioner in her hair after you do whatever it is you decide to do.

Look as bad as this sounds it is the truth that it will take awhile to come out, LOL. I know I know it's horrible but it's true. I have a daughter that is 2yrs and a 1yr old. She found the bottle of baby oil I use on them and smeared it on the floor in her hair her clothes. She does the worst things. The other day I went in her room to get her up from her nap, and she had taken all the desitin butt cream and smeared it head to toe all over herself. I had to wash her a million times in the shower.
The best thing that hasd worked for me is Dawn dish soap. I know u tried it but it is the best thing to get rid of oil-based products.

a tablespoon or two of baking soda in a blob of shampoo. That also does wonders if you have well water and have a lot of iron in the water etc.

If that doesnt' work, then I would try Dawn dish soap. AS it is an excellent grease cutter.

I want to second the opinion of Elizabeth... please keep the baby oil out of young children's reach. If they would happen to get any in their lungs, there's not much the doctors can do to help them. There was an Oprah show on several yrs ago about some young kids who got into a baby oil bottle, inhaled baby oil, and sadly, there was not much they could do to save them. The parents were advocating child proof caps on baby oil bottles.

I'd also recommend trying liquid Neutrogena soap.

apple cider vinegar. it's good as a hair rinse anyway, and it's good for just about anything else!

Try lemon juice. The citric acid will help cut the oil. As horrid as it sounds you can also use kitchen dish soap Dawn is one of the best but one with citrus in it helps. I would recommend baking soda and bag over their heads for about 10 minutes, but at their age this in itself could prove problematic, as it also will help grease and oil. I am a cosmetologist

To help keep babies curls in better try a light mousse or light hair spray. There are products you can get for curls that work really well. Matrix, Bed Head, and Redkin carry them. The problem with oil is than it has too much weight and pulls the curl out.

of course you want to do this when you are home... but powder up their heads with some cornstarch. Let that sit for a good while and wash it out... it may take a couple of times... but the cornstarch will soak it up.

baby powder...let it sit to absorb then shampoo...repeat if necessary

try a dish soap that cuts grease, like DAWN, then once hair is clean use a baby shampoo and conditionor on them to give back natural oil because dawn will be h*** o* their hair.....do not get it in their eyes because it will burn

I would use some baby powder (not too much otherwise you will end up with your kids having white hair) put a little in your hands rub slightly in your own hands and then rub it your children's hair. I used this method on my own hair after had my son and for some reason my hair was just oily for awhile and the baby powder does the trick. Good luck!

Use dawn liquid dish soap---it is a bit harsh but it works

I am a hairstylist and I have encountered things like this before. Don't wet the hair but put baking soda in the hair and leave it on for 15-30 minutes. You can put a bag on their heads to keep the mess to a minimum. (Keep their faces out of the bag, of course.) After the time has expired, wash their hair with Dawn dish soap. It is the best for removing build up. If that doesn't work let me know, there is a professional product that you can buy but it would be a little drastic for their heads.

I would suggest the Neutrogena shampoo as well. It's probably a bit better for baby than the Dawn (although that would certainly work as well).

LOL! Sorry to laugh but my 2 year old got into vaseline and rubbed it all over her hair. It took several washes with regular hair shampoo. I'd say about 5-10 washes. Good LucK!

I would try sprinkling corn starch or baby powder through their hair & then washing & repeating a few times. The corn starch should soak up the baby oil. Good Luck!

I don't know if others have suggested ths but it works.
Wash hair with Dawn Dish Soap, Then rewash with reg shampoo ( I do it just for the smell myself)

I have never had this happen but what about using a little powder to help absorb the oil and then washing their hair.

I would try the powder idea, but then google johnsons baby oil/go to their site. i'm sure this is not the first time it has happened, and they will probably have a section for trouble-shooting. especially since baby oil doesn't come off anything it gets on!

ALso, Dawn soap. if it is gentle enough to wash animals after oil spills, I guess it would do the trick here too!

i put warm water in a tub lots of shampoo in their hair and I let my two little ones lie in the tub with the warm water I had to let the water out and re do it twice as I remember. I followed that with a shampoo mixed with dish soap and it seemed to work
It happened to me two times once was with vasoline oh yes and I ran a papertowel through their hair before I did any thing

I would use the Dawn dish soap. Or maybe the new foamy kind would work. A few repeat washings in a row should do the trick!

Try using Dawn Direct Foam on their hair. My daughter recently used Milsek furniture oil to "slick" her hair back and I used that to remove the oil. It took a few washing but it eventually came out.

I think you should try adult hair shampoo and do not wet their hair first try to work up a good lather before you actually rinse it. After you think you have a good lather then try rinsing it. The last resort I would do is to try not so harsh dish soap in their hair. GOOD LUCK!

DAWN dish detergent!! works great for grease and oil and gum in hair. believe i've had that happen to me.

When my youngest slathered her body and hair with Vaseline I wiped off as much as I could, put her in the tub and washed her with Dawn dishsoap. It really is better than the other brands with this problem. It took a few washes and each time I emptied the tub and started with fresh water.

For the first day or two her hair had a slightly different texture (it was heavier), but it definitely was better than it would've been after regular shampoo.

Baking soda & mixed with any shampoo... make a paste-don't rub it to much into their scalp ... because it can be grainy & abrasive. Just smooth it on

Baking soda is all natural and should do the trick

My son did the same thing and I used dish soap for two days and then I would blow dry his hair. I think the heat from the blow dyer helped the most.

Try baby powder. Any kind of powder will help absorb the oil

I'd bet the Dawn would work too. Just be careful about keeping it out of their eyes...

Baby oil should be kept out of the reach of children since it can be toxic if they were to drink it. As far as the oily hair goes, keep washing it and it eventually will wash out. I sometimes use baby oil for cradle cap in children's hair, and it takes several days of washing to really get it out. We just used regular shampoo.

Hello. My teen-age daughter put high-lighter in her hair. It is very greasy. She thought it wasn't working and kept putting more on. I washed it 5 times and decided to try something else. I used BABY POWDER ! Cornstarch would work too. Pour it on and work it through the hair . Leave it set very a while. Then wash it out. The powder/cornstarch will absorb all the oil. You may have to do this a couple of times, but not 5 to 10 times. It worked.

You said you tried dish soap. Did you try Dawn? Tht is what the rescuers used on the birds in the Valdeze oil spill. Hope this helps. you also might try rubbing oatmeal into thier hair, first, to help absorb the oil.

It takes days to get rid of the oil. I have had it done too. And dish soap or shampoo is just best. Keep washing.

that baby oil is probably mineral oil which i thought you may want to know is Drying to the skin...wonder if baking soda would help get it out of the hair- maybe put olive oil on then try to wash it out with baking soda and shampoo-
actually, castor oil has a drawing action so some castor mixed with olive (because castor is so think) then baking soda and shampoo...maybe a few drops of tea tree (essential oil) in the oil or the shampoo :)

A little Dawn dish detergent should do the trick. Just be sure you don't get it in their eyes!

Don't know what to tell you about getting the baby oil out of your childs hair but I do know that baby oil should be kept out of reach. I saw a news story about a small child who drank baby oil and later died. Please put the baby oil out of reach!

I would try DUMPING a large amount of baby powder onto their heads first and working it through their hair, even brushing it and then adding more. Once you think it has absorbed a good amount try the dish soap. If it seems like it works a little bit even, then maybe try it again.

My advice would be to try Dawn dish detergent or a deep cleaning or clarifying shampoo.

I couldn't get Oil of Olay bodywash with Shea butter out of my 5 year olds hair. Herbal Essences Degunkify shampoo worked for us.

Baby powder takes it out of clothes ...I don't see why it wouldn't work in the kids hair just rub in alot of baby powder and wash with regular shampoo blow dry

hmm well i would think they have some shampoos specifically for "clarifying" hair and removing build-up of stuff that might work, also maybe lemon juice. i would call a local trusted hair salon or stylist for advice not a place like great clips- they probably wouldn't want to help you out. hope this is helpful and good luck getting that stuff out of your babies hair- sounds like something my daughter would do :)

I saturated both my kids heads in baby oil to get out the leavings of cradle cap. Nasty mess. It came out for me like this. Two nights of baths. Each night, wash their hair with their regular shampoo three times in a row. Wash then rinse three times. Next night, same thing. Might take one additional night. Just wash it several times in a row, for a couple nights in a row and it will be gone. How we love our children so! B.
