My Special Needs Child and Potty Training

My youngest son has CP and many conditions in relation to this as well as others that are related to a stroke. We have many hurdles to overcome daily and I am concerned about potty training. He is 3 1/2. He is not talking yet, but trying to babble. We are working with sign language. Has anyone been in this situation? Trying to overcome may battle, and choosing which ones come first?

What can I do next?

well God Bless you. That sounds like you have alot on your plate. Well what I think that works well is anything that speaks to the child like candy more TV time or whatever that child really enjoys and let them know if he goes to potty he gets an M&M or more time outside or a special movie and the first time he goes to potty do a dance and clap then they get excited to do it again

My little girl is also special needs. We don't have a diagnosis yet though. She is three and a half and no where near being ready for potty training.
I am sorry I do not have any advice I just want you to know that you are not alone.

hello my son has cp he is 21yrs. old and is still in diapers, and will be because he could not walk or talk. i did try to get mine to train but he could not. yours maybe differnt if he can walk, but it will take longer just take more time training him. listen you are blessed with the 3 sons. and it sounds like you can handle it. it will be hard but god does not give us more than we can handle. god bless you and your family.

Just love him and wait a while.

My little guy wasn't ready to potty train until 3 1/2 and he doesn't have any health issues.

I would like to invite you to an Easter Egg Hunt at Cathedral of Praise on Macon Road, in Cordova, TN. Go to Germantown Road and Macon Road. Turn between Walgreens and O'Charleys. Cathedral is just a little ways down Macon - right behind Schnucks.

Good Friday at 3p we will have an Easter Egg Hunt for Special Needs Children and Saturday at 11a is for all other children.

I am sorry to hear about all your struggles..Hope that it get's better for u as the road to life leads you on your way!

I know from personal experience that special needs children usually follow or mimic what u do ,so hopefully your husband doesn't have a problem with sitting down to pee and show's him the rope's...Ive seen this techinuque used before and then the little one's r like ok so thats how daddy or mommy does it ,well I think I can too! It might take a few times for a quick learner or it might take longer for other's ...i am the ,mother of a 2 yr old with ADHD and sometimes I am at a loss as to what to do next so good luck and God bless you and your family!

Does he see an occupational therapist? They should have some pointers. You might look around on amazon for a book on the subject for special needs children.
