My Son Refuses to Bath Himself

My son turned five in sept, I've been trieing to get him to bath himself since he turned 4. Both my kids take showers rather then baths although it is easier then leaning over the tub to bath them, it gets the floors soaked.

my daughter can wash her hair by herself and shes only three, but my son refuses to do any washing himself. If I ask him to wash he cries and says he cant that he wants me to do it for him.

I just recently found out that i'm expecting again and when I was expecting with my daughter it got to the point I couldnt bath my son anymore and had to have my mom do it for me. somewhere between me not doing it and my mom bathing him he became deathly afraid of the drain.

I dont want to reley on others to bath the kids this time around. my daughter trys to do it herself but my son has refused to try or to learn. he has a bath poof that has clifford the big red dog on it . I've tried getting him to play games when its bath time to get him to bath himself but they dont seem to work. I have bath soap paints. which he will paint on himself but wont wipe it off .

Any advice on how to get him to wash himself without going back to baths. would be greatly apperciated.

What can I do next?

I know what i do is not the best thing in the world for my 4 yr old. He hates to wash his head ( his hair is so short its like he has none LOL) He wouldn't lay back in the tub with the 2 inches of water I leave in there just to wash his hair with HE FREAKS!! So I got one of those shower heads that come off and you can move it around. Yea no matter where he runs I can still get him. He is getting used to lying down in the water now that he doesn't want chased with the shower head.

boys are lazy its not that he can't he just wants you to do it it may be a little jealosy also maybe bathtime is when you give him the most attention.....My six year old will go into the shower and not wash himself but i did find that if i get him the johnsons no slip soap he is getting better at it to the point now that he likes it and he doesn't drop the soap and he doesn't need a washcloth....he will not wash his hair so i will wash it for him everyother night it works out good now my three year old will not go inthe tub by herself or wash herself yet but she is autistic so i wouldn't let her you never know what she might try to do at any moment and then i have a six month old who i wash in the kitchen sink so i don't break my back...congrats and good luck

Hi S.. Congragulations! Have you tried making a game out of bath time? My youngest (23 months) hates getting his head wet at all, so I can't give him a shower, it has to be a bath, I use these tiny shower puffs with Nemo fish on them, and we play "get him" where I make the fish swim around and up his body all over the place, its been working so far to get his hair washed. Or maybe try special kid soaps, my daughter has playdough-like soap that can be shaped into anything but washes at the same time. And I've seen wash clothes a the Dollar Tree store that are in tiny little packages and once you get them wet, they expand. Hope some of this helps.

i think boys are a little "lazier" as far as helping themselves with things. you have to be patient and consistent. tell him he needs to wash himself make a game out of it. tell him lets ee how fast you can bath yourself. reward him and praise him even if he doesnt do such a great job. he will eventually get the hang of it... good luck and congrats on the latest addition on the way...
