My Daughter Hates Booster Seats, What Do I Buy or Try?

My daughter is 5 in kindergarten and on the small side. She is roughly 43 inches tall and 45lbs. So she is the right size for a booster. She HATES booster seats. We have tried the Graco Turbo Booster (which I liked) and a Evenflo one. Both highback boosters. She falls asleep and her head is in her lap. Looks unsafe to me. Not comfortable for her. She hates both of them.

She is currently in the Britax Marathon and we both LOVE it! Best carseat we've ever owned. This carseat will hold up to 65lbs. in the harness. This is not a booster. Problem is with a winter coat she doesn't fit. So I put the booster back in the car picked her up from kindergarten and she was in tears where's my seat? I told her she doens't fit in it we'll have to use a booster. She was still upset this morning. She likes this seat because of the comfort and that she can buckle herself in all by herself and quickly.

I don't know what to do or what my options are. There is a Britax Regent or Husky that is a carseat that has a harness for 80lbs. I believe but I'm afraid to spend the money if she doesn't like it.

Has anyone tried any other seats for this age range that have good head support for a sleeping child etc. Or any advise? All advise is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I moved the straps down a notch they were on the very top ones and I just moved it down the next one not sure if that's a good idea or not but I got a few more inches of harness slack that way. If that doesn't work I guess I will take her coat off of her and use a blanket. I really hate booster seats and wish car seat companies would make some different products so we could have more options. I don't have a problem with our usual use of the carseat in our car it's the long trips or errands when she falls asleep.

I would keep her in the Marathon. Britax seats are wonderful, I have both of my kids in them. If she likes it, keep her in it. (My dd is also 5 and still in hers, and doesnt want to give it up for a booster.) Warm the car up before she gets in, when you can, otherwise have her take off her coat to get in it. Then cover her with a blanket or lay her coat over her. Keep hat and mittens on her, as well. It is safer for a chld to use the car seat with OUT a big winter coat, anyways. They fit in it better, you can adjust it tighter, and they will be safer if you were in an accident. She should be able to stay in it for a long time. Also, pads or straps or anything you buy in the store, out of a catalog, etc, that did NOT come WITH the car seat, should not be used. There is no way of knowing how safe it is and it could change the effectiveness of the car seat.

HI,

I don't know which Turbo Booster seat you have, but we just bought 2 new ones for our son who just turned 3 on Sunday. The one I have in my car has a contoured headrest, and my son had no problems keeping his head up when he sleeps. I actually made a comment to my husband how much I love the new seat.... This is the one we have:

Ok, I may be out of line here but why does your daughter have to love her car seat? It's a matter of safety not fashion. When your daughter is too big for car seats, then what? Her head will be in her lap. Will you stop using your car for her?

Unless you are willing to waste alot of gas having the car warm up to room temp before she gets in, every time she gets in, and taking the coat off while IN the car only, then taking her coat off is not a great idea for winter. Safety and health need to come first!

I been using the Compass Booster seat with my 7 year old for about two years now. He too is on the small side being almost eight and 45 lbs and under 48 inches. This seat was a good fit as well as having EPS foam. We moved out of the Britax Roundabout and wanted something just as safe.

If your buying a new car try to find one with built in car seats has worked wonders for me. Due to the fact we move alot and all states are differnet. If not let her ride in the one she likes with out the coat. Jsut warm the car up before she gets in. Good luck

Could you use the Britax Regent with out her coat on and have a blanket for her? She's old enough to keep herself covered with a blanket and you'd save some money. It might be a pain to take her coat on and off, but it's better than crying, right? Either that or maybe buy a new coat that's thinner.

Just a suggestion, good luck!

My son isn't at that stage yet and I hate to admit it but I saw this on Nanny 911. The Nanny brought in the car seats for the kids to play with (in the house). This made the kids more comfortable with them and they actually couldn't wait to get in them in the car after that. Also, you could try having your daughter go shopping with you and helping to pick one out. It couldn't hurt to try.

Dear B.,
I have a few suggestions that may help you. My daughter is almost 4 and is in the Britax Marathon also, I found that with winter coat Emma freaks out if the hood is behind her head so I have to put it on her head and then tighten the straps and then place the hood she still screams at me. So I finally decied that I have to take her winter coat off when we get in the car and I put a blanket over her, then I put her coat back on so we can get out of the car. I can not remeber where I read this but I think it was in one of the parent magazines that this is safer. Who knows, it is just more work. I am looking for a coat with no hood, and then Emma will fit ok. Also for the booster seats, A couple catolouges make this seat belt strap covers that give support to older children so their heads do not fall in to their laps. Try One Step Ahead... I think they carry several types. I hope this helps.. atleast you are not alone.
