Multi-Vitamins

What are your thoughts on multi-vitamins? What brands do you use? Are you concerned about the refined sugar and other "bad stuff" in the vites? Do you offer gummies or hard chalky chewables? Any opinions welcome!

Thanks for the responses so far! I guess I should give more info - for myself, I don't actually take any as a lot of them upset my stomach, even taken w/ food. For childrens' vites, we give her Rhino Beanie Vites which are "jelly bean"-like and flavored with natural sugars and claim to have no artificial preservatives, flavors or colors. Also, Rhinos aren't too horribly priced. They're also recommended at 2/day where we've been only giving one...I attempted the Xylitol ones but those are chalky, sour and make the girl "close her eyes" (really they are kinda terrible-tasting).

What can I do next?

We use Oligo (mens, womens, over 50, and prenatals are available) and Koala Pals (kids chewables).

These don't contain "bad stuff" and they are highly absorpable/effective.

Like some of you other posters I use Oligo- and my son uses the childrens with Oligo- i have posted this link a few times, but it is where I found info on vitamin absorption. The one I was taking, while the best on the label, I couldn't find any info on the absorption rate, I couldn't FEEL the difference, and i did the vinegar test, and while it eventually broke down, the pieces were large- not sure being used by the body. To use the cheap brand vitamins with fillers has never even been an option for me.

Hope that helps! ;)

I like Shacklee and Metagenics products. Look up under Vitacost.com and Nutritional Concepts for Metagenics. Yes I would stay away from coloring, dyes and sugars and all those extras in the vitamins.

Arbonne's Hybrid Vitamins for Women. They have no Added Fillers, sugar, dies or colors and they are Cold Pressed, standardized made with only REAL WHOLE FOODS and just good for you. We also have a great kids punch flavored powder vitamins that you can add to water or juice, my Grandson loves them he thinks it is Juice! We have a Discount Membership (preferred client) and an autoship program both things help you save 20-80% off. You can test any vitamins that you use now by placing them in vinegar ( works like our own digestive enzymes) and start to time them as soon as you drop them in to see if your's are breaking down or if they are just eliminated. If they break down too soon they are not being absorbed if it is longer then 20 or 30 minutes I think then they are just eliminated.

i buy mine online. over the counter vitamins are awful. you may very well just flush dollar pills down the toilet, because you just pee or poop everything out and flush it down the toilet anyway. I take 3 vitamins each morning. multi-vitamin, stress vitamin, and joint vitamin. I LIVE by them. with my fibromyalgia my vitamins help me more than any medication ever has. So i am a true believer.

i also order my kids vitamins online. I dont like to give them things with food coloring if i can avoid it. So i order them chewable vitamins that are naturally flavored with cherry juice, no dyes, and no fillers. I dont have much of an option with them either though. My kids have celiac disease and cant take any of the vitamins with fillers because they are usually wheat or gluten fillers.

My family takes Body Balance, a whole food supplement made from organic Aloe Vera and Sea Vegetables. The tablet/capsule forms of vitamins and minerals are pretty much useless due to the lack of absorption into the body (typically 10 to maybe 20% of ingredients are absorbed) and can be harmful to your body because of that (people have experienced colon blockages and other symptoms because the tablets aren't digested correctly and clump together inside the body. You're also wasting money if the vitamins/minerals aren't getting absorbed. Body Balance is a liquid supplement - tastes great, is so easy to take, and the absorption rate is said to be at least 90%! It has a very low (all natural) sugar content (less than 4% per serving) of Honey, Stevia and Organic Cherry juice. There aren't any synthetic additives (vitamins, minerals, preservatives, sugar, color). This is a great way to provide a solid, nutritional foundation for our bodies and provides necessary trace minerals and nutrients that we're not receiving from food alone because of the depletion of our soils. My husband, 3 kids (7, 5, & 2) and myself take this, along with other products from Life Force. I am also pregnant and have loved this product during pregnancy!! If you want more info on this, the company, or other products that they provide, you can go to www.mylifeforce.net/catiemadden. I have been really impressed by this company and their products since being introduced to Body Balance in April 2010 and my family has stayed healthy!!!

I agree with Beth. The Vitality vitamins with Oligo by Melaleuca are amazing. They have them for Men, Women, 50 plus, Heart, joint, and many more. I am a preferred customer and meet my monthly amount just with the vitamins. Have not felt better. Let me know if I can show you more about them or get some for you.

As an adult I think they are important. I take a prenatal as my multi because regular multis upset my stomach and my gyn said that lots of women just take a prenatal for the rest of their life as their multi.
For my daughter (5yo), she doesn't take one. Yesterday we had her 5 year well-check and both the doctor and nurse said vitamins are over rated and if your child eats a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, dairy, breads, and meats, she/he doesn't need a vitamin. I was happy to hear that because I always wondered about the necessity of them.

We do Irwin Naturals. There is a formula for Men, Women and now children. We love them, my daughter goes nuts for hers. The kids formula is a soft chew not a gummy, she gets a half of a chew because she is under 4. They are natural, whole food and some of their formulas come in organic. Good luck I know this is an overwhelming selection process.

Hi L.,
Multi vitamins have actually been proven to be more harmful to the body than good. Instead of a multi I found whole food supplement a few years ago that is INCREDIBLE!! I have 2 small boys who used to get sick all the time, we started taking JuicePlus and we are so healthy now!! They have a chewable form for the kids that is soft, the only thing in it is fruits and veggies!! it is Awesome!! I love it check out this web site www.begreenjuiceplus.com
