More Potty Training...

Hey Moms!
Potty training has certainly been the hot topic lately, but I'm not finding suggestions to fit my specific dilemma. My 3.5 yr old son has been potty trained since Jan, including nighttime. Just recently he has been bedwetting. Let me go through the list just as a start; we limit liquids in the eve., have him potty b/f bed, no changes in siblings, behavior, household, family, activities, etc., he doesn't have any sensory or behavior issues, no traumatic events...and so on! I know that he potty trained early, and we had amazing success, but what could make him stop getting up to go in the night? We have put him back in pullups to save the mattress and we don't discipline him for bedwetting (it's not his fault). I'm just wondering if I'm missing something? Has anyone else experienced this? I guess I'm at a loss b/c if his development was such that he was physically able to make it through the night, and when he did need to go he would wake up, then what in the world would cause him to regress a bit? Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the great suggestions...the growth spurt seems to be the culprit (I hope). Of course, when he is in a pullup he wakes up dry!! Go figure! He gets embarrassed if he wets the bed and swears up and down it's 'just water'... soooo pullups it is! I really don't mind, he is young to be nighttime trained anyway...just wanted to make sure I was being thorough! You guys rock!!!

Hi L.,
I am kind of in the same situation. My son just turned 4 and is doing the same thing. We just went for a well child check-up and I asked my ped. about it. She said not to worry about it and that she was surprised he was night time trained. She said that a lot of kids were pull-ups until their 5 year check-up. She also said that every child is different so do what I feel is right. We decided to put he back in pull-ups because he would get very upset that he had an accident. He would try and hide his underware so that I wouldn't find out. We never got mad at him but he felt embarrased. I figured we would do pull-ups for a few months and try again. He is much happier because he doesn't worry so much about wetting the bed. Good luck.

My son kinda did the same thing-come to find out, he was scared to get up at night. Now he has a flashlight to help light the way to the potty at night. I bought him one of those flashlights that you crank instead of using batteries, that way if he leaves it on, I'm not spending a ton of $ on new batteries!!! Also, I've heard that sometimes during a growth spurt, it can take time for the bladder to catch up.?

It may not be regression. It may be a UTI or bladder infection.

Also a few things. Don't limit fluids EVER not even in the evening this can concentrate the urine irritating the lining of the bladder and causing release. No Juice or sugary drinks (Kool aide, Pop, ETC) as these can also cause bladder release issues.

Hi L.,
We've gone through the same type of thing with our children. (well the two that are potty trained) Our daughter has been trained for a few years, and still she will wet the bed at night somtimes. (she is almost 5 now). I am starting to realize that I think it has to do with fatigue. I notice it more in summer when they have been outside playing harder and longer durring the day. And I have noticed it more durring growth spurts when they are sleeping deeper and longer! Like all the others have said, I wouldnt worry. We were tired of spending so much money on pull ups when she only had an accident about 2 times a week... Maybe try getting a cheep matress cover that is water proof - or - we have also tried waking them before WE go to bed and have them go to the bathroom (about 1030pm or so...) They can almost go in their sleep when you carry them to the bathroom and sit them on the pot! Good luck!

I had a similar situation with my 4 yr. old daughter, not too long ago. Turns out she was just in too much of a deep sleep to wake up because she was over tired when we put her to bed. We moved her bed time up an hour and haven't had any issues since.
