Last year, My cycle came on time. Once before it had stopped completely. I had to take hormone pills to get it back on track. Now I have a 6 yr daughter. This last time it was off from May until the end of July. It came back heavy for about 3 weeks. I went to the doctors and they couldn't tell me anything. I went to a Ob-Gyn. He said that I had a backed up period. I have NEVER heard of that. My question is did I have a miscarrige.? I honestly believe I did. I passed big blood clots. They were dark. I have to wear 2 pads and I had to change them every two hours. I just want some answers

Hi There, The same kind of thing happened to me. I missed a month and ended up with the period from HELL! I thought miscarriage too after a while. On the 10th day of heavy bleeding I call my obgyn. This is how it was explained to me. Every month the uterus builds up a lining and a couple weeks after ovulation, if the egg is not fertilized, the uterus sheds this lining and that is when we have our period. Most likely when you skip a period it is because you skipped an ovulation and the signal was never sent to shed the prepared lining. So as days and weeks go on the body keeps building up this lining and there is never a signal sent that cause the period so it just keeps filling up, so too say. So once we do get rid of it it is way heavy and clotting because it's 2 cycles worth or more. I am going to be test for poly cystic ovary syndrome because it is happening again. You might want to mention this syndrome to your DR and see what they think. I was told if it was an incomplete miscarriage I would likely become very ill with a fever ect. and also there would be other signs like odor ect. Hope I help and didn't make you even more confused.

I'm no expert but from what I have read it is a possibility that you did. I don't think anyone would be able to tell you for sure at this point, I don't see how they could say for sure that you didn't. I have never heard of a backed up period either.

I have never heard of a backed up period either, odd. I would say most likely you did not have a miscarriage, but I would think they could do some sort of test?? If you truly feel uneasy about the situation, insist on an appointment with your OB. When I was younger I had the most horrible periods! They were so, so heavy and I had to wear super, extra protection. It was not uncommon for me to pass significant clots. Clots are only dark because they are "old" blood. They've been in there a while and are now heavy enough to come out. Being dark is not a sign of anything bad, it's just the way it is. Are you still having to change your pads every two hours? If that only lasted a day or two, I really wouldn't worry. If it's still going on...go to the doctor.

Sounds like a miscarrige to me also, and I've had several. I also have 5 children.
The thing to look for when having a miscarrige is the little ( like small fingernail) bean shape clot - that is the fetus.

Someone below mentioned Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). I have this and regularly experience long stretches without a period followed by a VERY heavy period with strong cramps during which I pass clots. You should ask your doctor to test you for this. I would suggest looking into a new GYN, as yours should have explained better what was happening to you than the completely irrelevant and non-medical explanation of "backed up period".

I've had that. What happens is that the lining in your uterus that usually sheds to cause your period has been building up for three months so that makes your period extra heavy and last longer. This may also mean that u have an ovulation problem. Your doctor sucks for not explaining this to you. I had it when I was eighteen so my doctor put me on birth control to regulate my cycle.

I have had a miscarriage & regularly have had heavy clotty periods. The clots were so big I thought I was miscarrying & sent off to be tested, but no, just blood. The misscarriage at 8 weeks had gray tissue...very little that passed with it. Otherwise nothing different as far as flow difference from heavy clotty period. Big difference in pain. Miscarriage hurt pretty bad. Hard to walk at one point & the pain mimiced labor as in it would be strong cramps then subside, then come back strong, then subside. Mine was about every 20 minutes. Dr. told me that if I went through more than one pad an hour for more than 4-5 hours, then come in otherwise I'd be ok. I don't know the cause of my heavy periods, but I do know that if I went & donated blood, then I noticed that my periods were milder. I have no idea why that would matter, but I tested it several times over about 5 years & it always helped me. So I became a regular blood donor until I got pregnant, since my son was delivered, I no longer have those kinds of periods. My system reset itself I guess. Hope this helps you. I know this is gross, but my clots were so big that it filled a specimen cup. the kind you normally pee in. This was at the worst, at best about dime sizish. Just to give you reference. Best of luck to you, it sucks not knowing what is going on. I never missed a period, but would be late up to 2 weeks. The donating blood got my cycles back on track instead of so irregular too.
