Hello I have had a mirena for a year and a half now and have only been sexually active with my boyfriend for 4 months, before I did not have a BF. Since being active and never having a period, I don't ever know if I'm pregnant. I often have symptoms like I am, tender breasts, frequent peeing, butterfiles in my tummy. I have taken a pregnancy test before and it was negative. But my questions is this-do any other ladies experience the same thing, symptoms and all? How are we supposed to ease our monthly minds if no period? I finally want my period bah!!!

What can I do next?

It's completely normal to have some pregnancy symptoms when using any hormonal birth control. Mirena is a both a barrier method & a hormonal method of birth control. Older copper style IUDs did not use hormones to prevent pregnancy, and women had more cramping & longer periods. IUDs are very effective methods of birth control. They are one of the highest non-permanent methods of available. Hopefully remembering that will help ease your mind each month.

I had the Mirena for 4 years and I to thought I was having symptoms of pregnancy every month for about a year. I started charting when I had the symptoms and it seemed to come at the time I was suppose to get my period. Just because we don't get our actual period, doesn't mean we don't get PMS and other symptoms of your period. At least that was my opinion while I had the mirena. I had the breast tenderness, cramps, frequent urination and mood swinges almost every month, I just didn't bleed. After a few months my anxiety lessoned and I didn't feel the need to take a pregnancy test every month. Not to say I didn't get nervous every once in a while. Relax. It is doing its job and you should just enjoy not having your period for the next 3 to 4 years. Good luck..

I have had the Mirena since July and only had my period once. I also noticed that I pee a lot more often and the urge is stronger too. I too sometimes question about being pregnant. I know a lot of these things are side effects, but it sure beats trying to remember a pill everyday with everything else going on. The Mirena is supposed to be really effective. Was your son born naturally or was he a c-section? My Dr. said since my daughter was a c-section there is a slight chance of it shifting, and had me in a cpl weeks later for a ultrasound. She did say that this was a VERY SLIGHT chance, and many times you feel really crampy if it shifts so that would be a signal. If you are really crampy, I would call your OBGYN immediately to schedule an Ultrasound. If you still get symptoms and think your pregnant, I would just keep taking EPTs to be sure. You never know, my GF got pregnant while on the pill...

PS - My fiance acts like my oldest's "brother" sometimes too, he loves to tease!

Hi M.,

Given what you describe, I suggest you go see your doctor and this information with him/her. Sometimes not getting your period can be signs of something else going on with your body (i.e. P.C.O.S.)My OB told me that no woman should go more than 3 months without a period. Doing so puts the uterus at risk and can cause serious problems. They will likely repeat the pregnancy test or test your blood. Atleast you will know whether or not you are pregnant!Good luck and Happy New Year!
