Migranes!

Hi all! I am now 16 weeks pregnant and have begun my migranes phase. I suffered through the same thing with my first child and am curious if any of you encountered the same issue. I was given Fioricet the firt time around but am told that the drug tends to only alleviate the problem for a short while and then symptoms return. I know that I would have to take anywhere from two to six a day just to function. I have been seen by the neurologist and there is nothing amiss. These severe and daily migranes only occur during pregnancy for me. I said all of that just to find out if any of you know anything stronger and safe to use to eliminate these migranes. Tylenol is a joke!! It really is like candy to my body. I would so appreciate any feedback you may have. Thanks so much!

I would suggest going to a chiropractor. It's safer for you and the baby & more effective. You will be amazed at the difference it makes. Even if you have to go everyday to correct the problem, it's well worth it. I know a great one in Edmond, OK. Let me know if you need his info. Good luck!

i had the exact same headache problem with both of my pregnancies and i have the same "tylonal is candy" problem too. i always have to take exedrin migraine but cant when your pregnant. my doc gave me fioricet (suggested it in fact) wih my first and when i had my second i had a different doc who i had to beg to give it to me. for the headaches were only bad enough to have to take it for a couple of months and then they werent so bad and i just got used to tolerating them. i dont know if yours were like that with yor first but maybe if you just take the fioricat for a little while say a month or so maybe you'll get to the point where you can quit takin them. if your doc will give them to ya just try it for a couple of months.
im sorry i dont have any different suggestions but i just wanted to let you know your not the only one who has had this problem. good luck and i hope it stops hurting.

I would also say, try eating something very cold. Also putting pure peppermint oil on your temples, and along the ridge of the back of your head, really helps me. Peppermint pulls heat from the body, which helps lessen the contracting of the blood vessels in your head. Make sure not to get it too close to your eyes, and a little goes a long way. Make sure you take your meds as soon as you start to feel the headache, sometimes if you wait too long meds don't help. good luck

My husband and I are chiropractors in Overland Park, and he does amazing things for patients with migraines (and then you may not need to take drugs during your pregnancy, which no one wants to do). It sounds like they may be hormone related, or it could be structural as your body changes.

Let us know if you are interested in having him check you out ###-###-####- First Choice Chiropractic- Dr. Kyle Younger). We would be happy to do so. As a new mom of a one month old, I can also attest to his ability to relieve pregnancy headaches!

Yours in health-

I suffered from those during my pregnancy and refused to take anything other than tylenol. I took warm baths and tried relaxation exercises. Close your eyes and imagine whatever relaxes you. I would imagine being at the beach, the warm sun, wind blowing, running my feet through the sand... I also would make my husband massage my neck, shoulders, temples, and all over my head. I just resigned to finding other methods to help the pain other than pills.

I am so sorry. I feel your pain.

I saw a chiropractor with my first kid and had no migranes whatsoever. It was a miracle for me! With my second child, I wasn't so lucky. I ended up taking percocet for them, which I didn't like at all. They are addictive and when you aren't taking them, your mood is usually horrible. I couldn't take Tylox ( tylenol w/ codine), because I was allergic to it. My second child came out just fine, but I would still reccomend trying the chiropractor first. If ya can't afford it though, just talk to your OB/GYN and they should be able to help you with it. Good luck!

I had those with my first pregnancy and was given Tylenol 3. If you can take codeine, ask your OB if they will OK it. I also went for a few Demerol injections at the doctor's office when they got realy bad.

When I get migraines the only thing that works is Orudis. But DO NOT take it without asking your doctor. It is available without a prescription but is also prescribed in higher doses.

It is amazing how many people responded with chiropratic care. I was thinking the same thing and then read the responses. I have a great chiropractor that helps me through my migraines (while I am pregnant mine are magnified, but I have them often at other times as well) with pressure point therapy (another words, he doesn't crack my bones). Sometimes having something out of place can cause awful headaches, and when your bones in your pelvis and back and shifting to make room for a growing baby, this can cause pressure in other places, causing pinched nerves and yes....the dreaded migraines.

Do you drink caffiene at all? Most of the time Caffiene will help, it's in all the Migraine medications available over the counter.

It could be that I drink a cold pop too but I'm sure the caffiene helps.

Half a cup, or glass so you don't turn the baby into a Cirque D'Soleil performer.

The next thing I would suggest is changing the pillows you sleep on. AND sleep every time you get your 4 year old to sleep. Forget the chores that you can only do when little one is down for a nap, you need to extra rest for the baby much more than an ultra clean house.

good luck to you from one military wife (retired) to another.

This is going to sound really strange, but try eating something cold - ice cream or a popsicle or something like that. I discovered this by accident during a migraine where I'd maxed out on the meds and was considering going to the ER, but I decided to try throwing up first since that usually helped. I was looking for something to eat that wouldn't be too obnoxious on the way up, so I snarfed down a bowl of vanilla ice cream and waited. I couldn't believe it when my headache went away. I told a neighbor about it, and she said her daughter's doctor had told her about eating something cold as a home remedy for migraines. Something about the cold affecting the blood vessels constricting or dilating or something. (I can never remember which way they go during a migraine)

Anyway - strange as it sounds - it certainly can't hurt. I hope you find some relief soon.

I'm so sorry to hear about the migraines, my hubby suffers from them and my son who is now 7 has suffered from them from the age of about 9 months or so..for my son we discovered the trigger for him was caffine...maybe this could be another trigger along with the pregnancy, just a thought. With my hubby his are generally caused by stress and lack of sleepand proper meals. Again so sorry to hear about the migraines.

The worst thing about pregnancy for me was migraines. Nothing but Zomig worked for me. It's by prescription and it IS a major medication, but mine were so bad (and still are) that only prescription meds work on them. I only get them right before my period and my whole pregnancy. I did try all the relaxation techniques and whatever I could to not take any meds but they were just too bad and I couldn't handle the throwing up and excrutiating pain. Nothing over the counter even touched the pain, much less any of the other symptoms. Zomig was prescribed by my ob as well as phenergen for nausea. Good luck! I know exactly how you feel!!

Hey sweetie,
I never have had this problem but know many women who have. The eating something cold is something i've never heard of but, will pass it on. I'm a massage therapist and agree that maybe a massage would help alot! Try to find someone that understands first hand how they feel. I used to get them and can remember all to well how horrible they were!! I would also make sure that you are drinking plenty of water, not just fluids. I've noticed that I start getting headaches if I need more water!
Good luck!
