I am struggling this year on where to go for summer vacation for the last 2 weeks of August. We have gone to Cape May, NJ several years in a row as well as Lake George, NY. We would like to go somewhere that is drivable from Westchester, NY. and are up for either beach or mountain/lake as long as there are activities to do, eg tennis, boating, water sports, pools, etc. It is always so hard to get reservations for this time of year at most of the good resorts. Any and all suggestions are welcomed!

Hi B.,
There is this place in NJ I used to take my kids and others I work for an adventure based counseling group. Its called Mohican Outdoor Camp it's run by Appliciahn Mountain Club
Heres the website, I strongly recommend it.

As a family we use to go to Martha's Vineyard when I was a little girl...I have not been there is many, many years but I have some of my best summer memories there from childhood. It's about a five to six hour drive to Woods Hole, MA. (that is where you catch the ferry) or use to anyway. I don't know if the location has changed. The ferry was always fun for me as a child and I am sure it still is for today's children as well. The ferry ride is about 45 minutes. The island itself is quit small so you can rent bike and ride from one end of the island to the next. The country's oldest merry-go-round is located in Coopers Town I belive. It's very quainte with the gingerbread houses...

The Connecticut Coastline is another option that a lot of people around here don't take into consideration.

Hope that gives you some ideas. Good luck and enjoy planning.

Head a little further south! Take the Cape May ferry to Lewes Delaware! From there you can get a really nice house in Bethany Beach, Dewey Beach or Rehobeth. Last two weeks in August are very avaiable down there because school starts in late August down in the south.

My family and I have vacationed down there for many years before my girls got older to the point where they have to be here in Westchester those two weeks for High school sports try outs.

You could also take a day trip from there further south to Chinctotique & Assateaque.

check out Jack Lingo Realtor for more info.

Have fun!

Go to Cape Cod. Stay in Brewster, which is on the bay side. When the tide is out, you can walk on the beach and dig for sand dollars and star fish. The kids love it. "Sea Pines" are town houses on the beach that you can rent. Or "Oceans Edge" is another place to stay.

Try Smuggler's Notch in Vermont. The boys would LOVE it. I don't think they have watersports right on the resort, but I imagine there might be nearby. www.smuggs.com

We have gone to Shelter Island every summer over the past 4 years. The Pridwin Inn is a low-key (not fancy) hotel which has a activities, a pool , fishing, boats etc. The Island is located between the North and South forks of LI. Close to the Hamptons, but with no aires of the Hamptons at all. It is a very beautiful , small Island with lots of beautiful beaches and a nature center. You must take a short ferry ride there, which holds the car. This makes the trip extra fun.
