Hi Ladies ~ I have a daughter with a mild and egg allergy. Since we found this out about six months ago, we have avoided eating out all together. Her 4th birthday is in two weeks and she wants nothing more than for us to take her out for a special dinner. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am in the naperville/plainfield area, but willing to go into the city for this one. Please keep in mind she also has a fish and nut allergy, as well. :o(

Thank you all in advance.

What can I do next?

Maybe Mexican? My 17-month-old loves beans and cheese, plus there are chips for a treat. Tortillas are egg-free. Very little risk of egg overall, unless you get anything battered (relleno, etc.).

My son is allergic to peanuts, milk and egg. We went to Macaroni Grill last weekend and they actually had separate menus for people with egg allergies and for people with milk allergies. But I agree that you could call around and see how allergy friendly places are (that's what I do if we're trying a new place). We've also done Outback Steakhouse. Try calling Red Robin to see their options as well. We actually eat out a lot with our son and haven't had any issues.

Try looking for a local vegan/vegetarian restaurant. Vegan won't have any animal products at all, and if you find a vegetarian restaurant, specify no nuts/eggs. Good luck!

Oooo, tough one. I'm not in your area, however in regard to my daughter's food allergy...

Chinese Food typically is not made with dairy. As for egg, nut and fish ingredients, I'm sure there would be some items on the menu that would be ok for her. You might have to pin-point a particular restaurant and call ahead of time to figure out what certain items are made with. Although be sure to ask what kind of oil they cook with... (hopefully its not a nut-based oil!)

Otherwise, find a restaurant and contact the chef to see if there is something he can make for her.

OMG absolutely NO Mexican or Chinese. They use peanut oil, peanut butter etc. Try going to the FAAN website. It's for food allergies. My son is highly allergic to peanuts so I know some places for that but I don't know about the egg/dairy situation.Would she be happy having a special birthday party at maybe Grandma's house? That way you could prepare everything yet it would be fun to be somewhere else.Good luck! I know it's difficult!

My son has a milk allergy as well, and I've found that many restaurants also post their allergy-free menus on their websites. Chili's, Red Robin (you have to request it and it's only for the current month) to name a few- this way you can preview it. But like others have said, if you ask at the restaurant they are usually pretty helpful. Also check out this website- http://www.godairyfree.org/Table/Dining-Out/Fast-Food-Res... This is a list of restaurants and menu items you might be able to order. Thought I'd share this great resource- and as always- check first. Happy dining out! :)

I will tell you that Maggiono's is amazing when it comes to allergies. My niece is allergice to dairy, tree nuts, peanuts, beef, pork and glutten. Whenever her family goes there they send a chef to the table and will create a dish for her. They ask her what she likes and dislikes and then works with her and mom to make a good meal. It is always yummy and we are highly impressed. As a server, I like they talk to the child but confirms everythign with a parent and you know the chef takes care of everything since he personally visits the table. I suggest this place. Good luck.

We went to Red Robbin and didn't have a positive experience there. They didn't give us a special menu, we didn't deal with a manager (until she broke out in hives due to something she ate) and we were unimpressed on how they handled the entire incident. Maybe we had a bad server but please be careful.

Pretty much every restaraunt is sensitive to food allergies nowadays. Pick a nice place and give them a call before hand to find out about the menu. I'm sure they will be very accomodating. We are vegetarians and we love the Chicago Diner in Chicago. They have a variety of food that is dairy and egg free, and it tastes great! veggiediner.com. You can order a birthday cake from them as well. Good luck!

Red Robin does a great job catering to those with food allergies. They will give you a menu specifically for what the person is allergic to. Ex: if you have an egg or wheat allergy, they will give you the menus for everything that don't contain those allergens so you can order what will work. If you tell the server about the allergy, usually the manager deals specifically with you because they want to make sure it's done right. Ex: my son has egg, wheat, dairy, and peanut among his allergies so if he gets a piece of grilled chicken they have to use separate tongs to touch the chicken. If it touches a bun and then the chicken he'll get hives. He's always good with the fries there. There aren't too many places that I really trust to take it seriously, but Red Robin gets high ratings with me!

I have taken my son to many Chinese and Mexican restaurants. I just make sure that they don't use peanut oil to cook in beforehand. That's usually the best thing--call ahead to talk to the manager so you are prepared. Many places are more accustomed to this now. If you get an employee who doesn't know or "isn't sure" what type of oil they cook in ask for a manager so you can know for sure. A good server to me is one who says, I don't know, but I will definitely find out. I can usually tell if they don't care and aren't really going to check, so that's when I ask for a manager.

Hi N. -
My son is almost 2 and has had milk, egg & nut allergies since birth. I live in Naperville and go out to eat quite often for dinner & breakfast (on the weekends) and just bring my own food for him. It is so much easier than trying to make sure the food he would eat from a restaurant would be allergy free. You could take your daughter to a fun place to eat and just bring your own food. Just tell her it is her special dinner! Good luck.
