My daughter has recently been diagnosised with eczema. The cream her pediatrician gave us initially helped some, but it hasn't completely gone away. I am looking for ideas from those experienced with eczema. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Both my girls have it and we use Cetaphil (the one in the pump bottle). At first I put it on as often as I can, for example every diaper change. Then when the patches get smaller I use it everytime I change their clothes. The other tip that I was given was to never wipe (only pat) their bodies when getting them out of the tub, and get the lotion on as quick as you can to trap the water on the skin.

Both my husband and my son have eczema, and Aquaphor works wonders for them. You can find it at drugstores and some supermarkets. It's in a white tub with a blue top. Applying it after a shower/bath seems to net the best results for them. The consistiency is like Vaseline so you don't have to slather it on.

Good luck!

I have tried every cream and potion that has been recommended by my pediatrician and my dermatologist. The only thing that works for us (and I've passed it along to others who have had success) is a product called Baby Eczema Care. It comes in a tub and is a very nice, non-greasy lotion. It's really hard to find--in fact I used to get it at Babies R Us, but I don't think they carry it anymore. Now that my daughter is a teen, she still have flare-ups. I have found that if she adds flax seed to her diet her skin is calmer. I'm not usually the homeopathic type, but the flax has really worked for her!

Try Eurcerin cream in the jar. I used it for my son when he was a baby. He had dry skin,it helped greatly.

My son had issues with dairy and wheat but I didn't watch it that closely. It got worse when he ate that stuff. We also used "Gentle Naturals" baby wash and ointment. The ointment is a little greasy but it really helps. You can get it at meijer in the baby wash aisle. Usually near the top shelf in a kind of aqua colored box with red on the label. (unless they've changed their packaging!)

Good luck!

I am assuming you live in the Detroit area??? Go to www.ahccenter.com
This is an alternative healthcare center in, Grosse Pointe, with chiropractors and clinical nutritionists who do an incredible job of finding the causes of issues like eczema and treating them naturally rather than just treating the symptoms. They are great at detecting food allergies. It could be something as simple as a milk allergy.

Chances are the eczema is a reaction to food. Try eliminating dairy for a couple weeks and see what happens. If that is not it, try eliminating wheat for a couple weeks...if tht is not it try eggs, then corn, then soy. Try them each separately/one-at-a-time so you can be sure to identify the right food.

I shop with a company that has a lotion (and bath oil) called Renew that we have lots of testimonials about how it has helped their eczema. I have seborrhea (another chronic skin condition)and it keeps it in control (don't see it).

Have the doctors ruled out allergies? Apparently they're linked. Our 14 month old has always had eczema. A few times she's had staph infections from the itchy, open skin. After a few different treatments didn't work, the peds did a blood test and discovered that she was allergic to eggs, wheat, dairy and tree nuts. Basically, everything I was eating was giving her a reaction which heightened the eczema. With a change in diet, we've been able to reduce the skin creams/cortizone we have to apply (not completely, but for the most part).
FYI-we use cetaphil cream (not lotion) twice a day and a prescrition cortizone when she flares up. He allergist says the cream should be applied within seconds after getting out of the tub.
Good luck and HTH!

Hi K.,

My daughter and I both suffer from eczema. At her age there is not much the doctor can give her. Pay very close attention to what she eats try to stay away from acidic foods, citrus, peanuts and change her lotion & soap. We use Aveeno baby wash and lotion (fragrance free) stay away smelly good stuff, and for breakouts we use the Aveeno baby Soothing relief creamy wash You also should cut down on bath time (water dries out the skin) Find a good wash powder and stick with it... This helps us immensely I hope this helps you… She may also grow out of it I did for the most part I just need to watch what I eat!

K.,

I have eczema on my hands. I've tried several different things through the years in addition to prescription creams. When I have a flare up and my skin is raw I switch between the prescription cream and Neosporin. The Neo seems to help heal the area and allows the presciption med to do it's job.

Recently my daughter was diagnosed with Impetigo (a skin infection) and was prescibed Bactroban (generic-Mupirocin) to clear it up. The doctor described it as Neosporin but 10x better. I decided to try it one night and found my hards have cleared up better than anything I've tried - after one treatment!

My eczema is triggered when I've allowed my skin to get too dry. So, I wear gloves when washing the dishes or cleaning the bathroom, etc. I also use a good lotion at night to moisten the skin. Another suggestion is to stop using antibacterial hand soap as it also contributes to drying the skin. I hope this helps.

Good luck and hang in there!

I agree with Trish, 2 of my kids had eczema so bad they looked as if they had been burned. Both of them have allergies to milk and other things like eggs, wheat, etc.(both were breast fed) I also used the Cetaphil with great results. Plus I eliminated all colors, dyes, fragrances. Washed all clothes (all household clothes) in Tide "free", used Dove soap my son was given a prescription as well but when I researched it I found that it was linked to stunting growth so I used it very sparingly. Hope this helps

Hi K.,
Our son had severe eczema. We met with Dermatologists, allergists, etc... and tried creams with no permanent solution. Went to a holisitic Pediatrician in Ann Arbor and have discovered that Gluten is a big problem for him (this did not show up on allergy tests - however when we removed gluten, his eczema cleared up completely). He also has flair ups when exposed to his other allergy foods - eggs, bannanas. Many docs treat eczema externally but the root cause is internal. Exploring this is a must. From the outside we apply Flax seed oil and Borage oil daily. We use a little hydrocortisone when a bad flare up occurs and a thick cream in the winter when skin gets dry. The Ann Arbor doc also started him on homeopathics to help his system and he takes Cod liver oil and Probiotics to support his system. Since his eczema is cleared, he is looking awesome. He has also gained weight, stool has normalized and he is so happy (these are things we didnt really notice as being a problem until they got better). Take care - L.

Try eliminating all dairy for one or two weeks- see what happens. I have seen a severe case of Eczema completely disapear by doing so.

Hi K.! You've received some good advice. Are you aware of any allergies in your little girl?

I have some thoughts and my own story to share but if I could understand better what you've already done it would help me be more helpful.

What are your daughter's eating habits like? What laundry products do you use? Has your Dr talked with you about what kind of fats your daughter may need? Has Dr talked about strengthening her immune system?

The fats was a part of my story with our son. Once I figured out what fats and other nutrients he specifically needed ( a friend gave me a tool for this) the eczema healed. I would be happy to share more details if this direction sounds like a fit for you.

warmly, M.

I would recommend Arbonne. They are Swiss-formulated, herbally and botanically based products with no artificial dyes or fragrances that often irritate sensitive skin. Specifically, given your daughter's age, I would recommend the ABC Body Wash and ABC Body Lotion. The cost is $14 each and all products come with a $$$ back guarantee. If it doesn't help, I want it back. I have had many clients who had found tremendous relief from eczema with Arbonne's products. I met a Mom at the beginning of August who had struggled to find a solution for her son's eczema. She tried Arbonne and within a week his condition was almost completely cleared up. If you are interested, you can contact me via Mamasource or call me directly at ###-###-####. Good luck.

Try Melaleuca products. My cousin and her children had eczema really bad, now it is totally gone. She used the Melaleuca lotion, bath oil, and soap. You would have to find a distributor though. Go to their website to find someone in your area on melaleuca.com. Melaleuca products contain high quality tea tree oil. I have tried the products and they are wonderful. I love their toothpaste line and that lotion is awesome. I hope this is helpful.
