Looking for a Vacation Spot Half-way Chicago and Tampa

My family is planning a vacation next fall. We would like to rent cabin / cabins somewhere around the half way point between Chicago and Tampa. It can be one huge cabin big enough to fit approx 20-25 people or separate cabins that can each fit 4-5 people. We are looking for a get away. We will do our own thing part of the time but also family all together playing games etc. Does anyone know of a good spot? The area can be anywhere between Chattanooga and Knoxville. Within a hundred miles any direction. But we are coming from all over and that's the center point so need to be in that General area. I am not familiar with that area at all. This will be our first of hopefully many family trips. Now that the kids are grown we are spread out.

These ideas sound great. I am looking for actual references for places that you have been. Not just general cities etc. I have looked at websites but am looking for personal references.

Sorry should have put this in. No young kids. My inlaws are lat 60's - 80's. my husband and self and some of sibs are mid to late 50's. and my kids are all 20's to 30's. so no need for playgrounds amusement parks etc. just places to stretch out and visit. cooking facility is good but restaurants also a must.

What can I do next?

Check out Little Switzerland NC. It's 10 hours 48 minutes from Chicago and 10 hours from Tampa.

It's so gorgeous! Just lovely nature and area. We've been to Wildacres for educational classes and love that whole area. We've also thought about retiring there at some point.

Check VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner). I've had a lot of friends use the site and were very happy!

I just typed in Chattanooga really quick. This house sleeps 16 and is $600/night or $3900/week. You may have to get 2 houses.

Nashville, TN, Asheville, NC or Gatlinburg, TN. There is so much to do in these areas (and between them).

I love Gatlinburg area. Been there twice b/c it's so great. Plenty of stuff for a family that likes the outdoors. I'm not sure about cabins that big, but I bet they have them. I stayed in a 3 bedroom cabin. Yummy wine there too! ;)

Kids? Ages?

We did Wilderness at the Smokies this past fall for a few days - my grand loved the indoor waterpark -- and if it is warm enough, they also open part of the outdoor park (we missed that one the last day)

Then there is all the stuff between Sevierville and Gatlinburg.

If you are going to do cabins in the fall - it is a good idea to start looking as they fill up fast! It was just the 2 of us - but we might look into a cabin for another visit.

Anywhere between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. What a great area and in the fall it is spectacular. I would guess you would need three cabins. They usually will sleep 8. Nashville is an awesome place too!
