Looking for a Good Crockpot Recipe

I'm looking for crockpot recipes that allow the food to be in the crockpot for at least 10 hours while I'm at work. My crockpot does have the warm setting, but stays so hot that it keeps cooking (aka burning) the food. I'd like to make use of the crockpot, but have had no success. Everything turns out burnt or totally dry. All the recipes I find are for a shorter amount of time. Either that or you have to add things during the day which I can't.

I'm also a working mom of 2 and asked a friend the same question a few months ago. While she didn't have any crockpot recipes, she did refer me to the Six O'Clock Scramble, a weekly email with recipes that are super easy to prepare, helthy and that kids love. It has saved me a ton, of time, money, and stress, and achieved the same objective as a crockpot. The website is thescramble.com.

Hope it helps.

I'm so glad you put this question out there as I'm constantly on the hunt for 10 hour crock-pot recipes - - here is one I've tried and my family loves.

3+ lb Pork loin, 1 sliced onion (I’ve used white or Spanish), 1 ½ cup Chicken Broth, 1 ½ cup white wine, 1 tsp thyme, 1 tsp sage, salt and pepper.

Rub pork with salt and pepper, sprinkle thyme and sage on top. Put into crockpot and cover with onions, broth and wine. This can cook for 10 to 12 hours on low. When done remove loin and slowly add flour to remaining liquid for a really yummy gravy. I’ve served this over brown rice and egg noodles.

The original recipe called for browning the pork loin in a pan before putting it in the crock-pot -- I've never done this as I am scrambling as it is in the AM. Also, when I make this I use the largest pork loin I can find so this makes 2 meals (good on sandwiches or reheated).

I am making this one today. ground chuck roast (2-3 LBS), 1 can of cream of mushroom (or celery or potatoe), 1 package of dry onion soup mix. Mix soups together (no water), put roast on top and coat both sides. Cook on high (if roast is frozen) or med/low. Serve over noodles. (Roast falls apart while cooking). Another helpful hint is to use the slow cooker liners that came out about a year ago.

I have another one for stuffed flank steak. butterfly the flank steak and season both sides with italian seasoning. Rinse frozen chopped spinich and spread on the flank steak. Next put shredded mozzerella Chz on top. Roll up flank steak and tie together. Brown all sides in pan with olive oil.
Put steak in slow cooker with a jar of red sauce. Cook on med/low for 10 hours.

Good Luck,

D.

Here's a really great recipe that my mom gave to me years ago. Everyone loves this. It's really tender and juicy so little ones tend to like it too.

Ingredients
-----------
pkg boneless pork chops
2-3 cans cream of celery soup
dehydrated minced onion (seasoning) or the real thing
rice

Directions
----------
Place boneless pork chops in a single layer at the bottom of the crock pot. Season both sides with a little season all, garlic powder, and pepper. Add some dehydrated minced onion or finely chopped onions (I've always used the dehydrated stuff). Cover chops with 2-3 cans of cream of celery soup. Do not add water. Feel free to add more soup for more gravy goodness. Cook on low 10-12 hours. Serve over rice.

My crockpot has a warming setting too which I've never had problems with. My sister has the same one though and her's burns. Maybe try another crockpot. This recipe has always worked great for me. Takes just about 25 mins to cook regular rice so it's easy to do when you get home from work. Hope you enjoy.

-Jen

Oops, forgot to mention. It's totally okay to put the chops in mostly to completely frozen.

Hi D.,

I gone for 8-10 hours as well and I here's one that I use all the time..

1-1.5 lbs. chicken breast (frozen is fine)
1 can cream of chicken soup (you can use the lowfat or regular)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 packet of dried onion soup mix (lipton)
salt and pepper

I let it go all day on the low setting and never have a problem with burning. I serve it over brown or white rice and everyone in the family loves it!

Hi D.,

I have the Fix It and Forget It Cookbook and the Better Homes and Gardens Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes. Between the two I have found lots of good recipes. You can also try the Food Network website, www.foodtv.com for ideas. Also, www.about.com has a cooking area that has slow-cooker recipes. All good resources. I use my Crock Pot a lot, especially this time of year!

D.,
I make this for my family all the time and they love it.
Take one Pot roast, 1 can of French onion soup (I use Campbell's), rosemary to taste (my guys aren't crazy about it so I go easy on it)and some garlic. That's it. Turn it on and let it go. It can cook for 12 hours and will fall apart.

The best is that you can reheat leftovers without the juice and mix in with some BBQ sauce for BBQ beef sandwiches or taco seasonings for quickie tacos or burritos. So really, you're making 2+ "planned leftover" meals in that one day if you buy a big roast. Sometimes I freeze some of the meat to save for a different meal. I'm all about saving time. I hope this is helpful. HeatherL

I make scalloped potatoes and ham at least once a month. Take about 6 medium to large potaoes peel if desired, slice into crock pot, take a ham steak and cut into cubes, add one can of cream of mushroom soup, one cup of milk, and one cup shedded cheddar cheese, salt and pepper to taste, and let it cook about 11 hours. My husband loves it and the left overs are enough to freeze for another meal. I am going to get that fix it and forget it book it sounds like a winner.

I'm with Yvonne, I use www.allrecipes.com all the time and have some good ones.
another alternative is to put the crockpot on overnight while you are in the house and then its cooked the next day, and you can just reheat in the microwave what you need (and put the rest in the freezer)
I had the same problem with it burning and ended up getting one with more heat variation and that works better for me.
If you do make it home and you have a couple hours to spare, make some biscuits and put them on top of whatever you are cooking (or just cook them real quick in the oven), helps stretch out the meal if its reduced more than you planned and tastes great.

This is very easy and a sure thing, especially if you like spicy foods. Add a briskett, Claude's briskett sauce and a 1/2 jar of jalepenos. Put it all in a crock on the low heat and it's fabulous! I even add some red potatoes and carrots. Enjoy!

A couple of suggestions. Do a Google search for crockpot recipes and you'll find sites with loads of recipes. If you want to narrow it down, in your Google search, type crockpot recipe and then type a couple ingredients, ex. chicken, and it will narrow them down.
Also, here's an idea I just tried recently. Put a frozen turkey breast(on the bone) in the crockpot and cook on low for 10-12 hours. A 4-5 lb. breast can be frozen solid when it goes in and will cook slowly all day for you. The crockpot keeps it moist, so moist that my husband thought it was dark meat when he ate it! You can also add big chunks of potatoes and they'll cook along with the turkey.

Hi D.--

I also use the trick listed below of a timer that goes on when you would need it to. That works very well for us (unless you are a dope like me and put it on the wrong time (AM vs PM). Oops! When I was working, my husband and I would be gone 13 hours a day (yes, unfortunately that meant my little guy was in daycare for 12--yuck!) and we were able to have nice hot meals when we got home using the timer method. My favorite cookbook for crockpot recipes is "Fix it and Forget it" and there is a Pepsi PotRoast recipe in there that is fabulous. The sugars and caffiene in the pepsi make the meat really tender. I let my sister borrow the book so can't write it down, but it's a 10-12 hour recipe. Good luck!

Try getting one of those automatic timer things that you can put onto your lights when you're out of town. Just set your crock pot to turn on at, say, noon instead of 8:00 AM. If you're worried about meat sitting out for that long, put it in the freezer for a couple hours (not frozen solid, but colder than the fridge) before you put it in the pot.

A couple things I do regularly for crockpot is chicken. I usually put the chicken in FROZEn so it's not as falling apart. Put chicken thighs/breasts etc in and top it with salsa. Cook for the whole time you are gone.. about 10 hours is fine.. and make some rice or pasta when you get home. It's great.

Another one is to put in a frozen whole chicken with a can of cream of something soup. Cook all day and you are good to go! Always put the chicken in frozen if you can.. helps. =)

Same with a roast.. just put it in, can of v8 juice or something... soup that you like (tomato) and you are good!

I used my crockpot all the time when I was working. I would set it on low and when I came home the food was done and I grabbed a plate to eat. Pot roast or a flat bone roast with green peppers, onions, garlic powder, salt/pepper and a few cups of water did the trick. I even did chicken that way bue used less water. And believe it or not I made a meatloaf in the crock pot. I put all of the ingredients in it; wrapped it in aluminum foil and cooked it but the trick is to take a cereal bowl and turn it upside down and place the meatloaf on top of the inverted bowl so it doesn't have direct contact with the bottom of the crock pot. Always put the pot on low so it cooks real slowly. If you want a shorter time get one of those plug-in timers that you can set for your lights to turn on and off but plug the crock pot into it for the time needed to cook your meal. You can make the best chicken soup ever in the crockpot too. EXPERIMENT! I'm a great-grandmother and I've been using my crock pot for a long time. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

One other option, if you want to use some of the 7-hour recipes still, is to put the crock pot on a timer. Get all the food set up in it and then have the timer turn it on for you a couple hours later, or turn off for you when it's done.

I would suggest investing in a new crockpot with a low heat setting. Also, make sure you are adding enough liquid to the pot. Many things like chicken breast don't have much extra fat so they will burn after 10 hrs without added liquid.

There are tons of great cookbooks, I'd go on ebay or hit a bookstore. I've used the DUMMIE'S cookbook, and it is great. I mostly do stews and soups.

As far as burning, make sure you add enough water, maybe even a little extra. Also, use PAM or something to cover the inside - the top tends to burn since it gets no liquid. Maybe you need a new crockpot? I've seen some with timers, and some with partial refrigeration so you can set the timer, AND it'll keep it cold, and then you can do the 8 hour ones. Not sure on how expensive THAT is though. Or maybe a smaller one, that will be more FULL with liquid. I have a HUGE one, and no matter what recipe, it never fills it all the way, and the top of the container get rather scortched.

Good luck,
Richard

I don't have any recipes for you, but I do have a suggestion. Make sure that your crock pot is full enough - 1/2 to 2/3 full. If you have a large pot with just a little food in it, that can allow the pot to get too hot.
