Hi Mama's, i was just wondering what you all use to get rid of lice? This is the 2nd time in 3 years that we have got it, and i am not impressed w/the over the counter products and traditional solutions. Have any of you all had this or know of a great solution??? I know the drill on cleaning everything, and removing the nits, but the initial treatment is not very effective. Any new ideas would be appreciated!

So What Happened?

Just want to say thank you for all the advice. We have tried the tea tree oil, followed by Olive oil and are working thru the combing process now. It is not easy with long, thick hair. I was so glad to know that Walmart sold Tea Tree Oil so much cheaper than GNC!!!!
Thank you again for all the advice!!! R.

I've heard of doing the olive oil thing.

One thing to remember is that you need to spray the lice stuff on everything: stuffed animals, pillows, all bedding/blankets, couch, carpet, car seats, all clothes...everything!! If you don't get all the stuff the lice can live in, you're going to get a re-infestation.

Lice is terrible! My daughter had it right at the beginning of the school year and we had the toughest time getting rid of it. We used the RID and all that over the counter stuff. After using RID and doing the "big comb-out" I washed her hair every night (or every other night) with Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo and Conditioner. And then do another quick comb through to get any stragglers. My husband and I already used it every day and we never got the lice. It's something about the tea tree oil in it that the lice can't take. After you get rid of them, wash your kid's hair with this shampoo once every week or two as a preventative measure. They shouldn't get it again.

My neice came to stay with us twice and had lice, then a friend moved in w/ us for a while and her daughters kept getting lice at school (we homeschool) - so we went through this alot!

Get a 16 oz (ish) spray bottle and fill it w/ rubbing alcohol - then add about 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil. (commonly reffered to as meluca oil) -- you can buy it at whole foods or sprouts - BUT you can also get it at Walmart -- it's in the first aid section, usually at the bottom of the shelf - dark brown bottle w/ tan wrapper and "TEA TREE OIL" in Dark brown letters - it is MUCH cheaper at Walmart than anywhere else.

Treat the hair just as you would w/ a conventional product. Start at teh bottom (nape of neck) and separate the hair getting every strand wet and making sure to pull off the nits and lice as you come across them, make sure to use a tissue to wipe them on so that when you are done you can flush it down the toilet (or put in a sealed ziploc bag in the trash). Repeat this 7 days later, and then 7 days after that so that you are sure you have gotten them all.

It's a pain - but the best thing is to go through the hair every single day and pull out anythign you missed!

Shampoos w/ tea tree oil or even coconut oil are good at repelling lice. When you send your kids to school, use hairspray or gel in their hair, so "neighboring" lice can't latch on to their hair.

Good luck to you!

Melaleuca Oil is great for getting rid of lice! There was an outbreak at my school & it wasn't until people started treating with Melaleuca Oil & adding some to their shampoo that the lice was gone for good. You can buy other forms of the oil at other places but Melaleuca oil is the best I've ever used. I definitely recommend it. :) Let me know if you'd like any info on how to order some.

I know this might sound like....."WHAT, THAT'S CRAZY!!!!"...but it worked for me at the time...I had very, very thick curly hair and down to my bottom when I was young(imagine the torture trying to pull out lice with this type of hair)...and I guess back in the 70's they didn't have much on how to get rid of lice ...so my dear mom...would get a black thick hefty bag...cut a hole in it for my head to go through it and a a big cardboard with a hole large enough for my hair to get through it (not my head) and she would use...get this...she would use ROACH REPELLENT!!!!.....weird huh....but as weird as it sounds it did the work....in my whole lifetime I only broke out once when I was in grade school and once when I was in high school...

I am not recommending you try this...I just wanted to share a story with you...THANK GOD...there's stuff out there for lice...good or bad...but something...ha ha

Anyways...I hope you find the solutiion cuz I KNOW it CAN be torture :)

Blessings to you and your family

Mayo is the way to go put it all over and put a shower cap over the hair. It will smoother them then wash and still comb out with the little comb that you use for lice. Good luck

I've heard that smearing Vaseline all over to smother them. Then wash it out with Dawn dish liquid.

This worked for me! First get Dawn dishwashing liquid, wash with this. Then get a white cream rinse ( you can see the critters this way) put a lot on and comb through. Then blow dry and totally soak the head in olive oil. Put a shower cap on and wrap an old t shirt around their head so it doesn't drip out. Pop a two hour video in and let it soak. Re shampoo with the Dawn and blow dry again.
I got all this from a Harvard Medical School website as well as a couple of alternative lice sites.
The two hour soak in olive oil is essential. I think it smothers them.
Good luck!

I came across an old-fashioned natural treatment for head lice while watching an old Scandinavian film years ago. I used it on my youngest child and it worked really great. Shampoo and rinse the effected hair the usual way. This can be a shampoo with tea tree oils. Towel-dry the hair and then smother it very generously with conditioner. The more, the better, especially the hair sections close to the scalp. Have 'the patient' sit on a comfortable chair, as the whole process can take a while, especially with long thick hair. Get a bowl of water with white vinegar added, a large towel, hair bands and/or clips to separate the hair into sections, a nit (lice) comb, and another thin toothed comb to separate the hair into thin layers. With the conditioner still on the hair, work from the neck line towards each side of the head and then towards the front of the head. Start sectioning the first layer of hair (as your hair dresser would for coloring your hair) starting from the neck, run your nit comb through from the root of the strand of hair all the way through the whole length of the sectioned hair. This will remove the conditioner with the lice and nits (lice eggs) from the hair. After each time you run the nit comb through the affected hair, rinse the comb in the vinegar water (you may have to change the water several times) and pad it dry on a towel. After you worked through the entire hair this way, you should have removed quite a view of the lice and nits. It is important, that you start combing from the scalp, as close as possible, as the lice lay their eggs close to the scalp on the hair shaft. Now comes the fun part. Rinse the hair until no conditioner is left. Then mix luke warm water with white vinegar and carefully rinse the entire hair with this solution. The best way is to tilt the head either completely forward or backwards. It is important that "the patient' closes his/her eyes and covers them with a wash rag. You don't want to get any of the vinegar water into the "patients" eyes, as it will sting. After rinsing generously with the luke warm vinegar water, wrap the entire hair in a large towel (preferably white so you can see the dead lice). Leave the towel on the hair for about half an hour or so and then carefully remove the towel. Rinse the hair again, but don't use anything else on the hair, as the vinegar will still be effective. Comb through the hair and only dry the hair slightly. Repeat every 3 to 5 days until all lice and nits are killed. Don’t leave more than 5 days between treatments.

I tried the Robo-comb that someone suggested earlier on my two girls, and it worked. This was after weeks of treating with RID and all the other OTC lice treatments. Both my daughters have long hair down to about the middle of their back and one has super thick and wavy hair so I was quite surprised that the comb worked. The RID was awful and left my girls' hair in a tangled mess and had them crying when I tried to comb it out. I wish I tried the Robo-comb when my daughter first suggested it because she thought it was COOL!
Good luck!

R.,
I'm sorry to hear about your lice problem. My children are grown now and I haven't had the problem in years. But I have since heard about these treatments with Tee Tree Oil, mineral oils and such. I would definitely give these things a try. The otc remedies are so very expensive and as you have seen are not very effective anymore. The advice Anita S. gave you is right on about washing all bedding, etc. and putting stuffed toys in a bag for two weeks. This is extremely important to wart off any infestations. Whatever you do, do not take your children and get them haircuts. I am a hairdresser and I can't tell you how many times over the years
parents have brought their children in with beautiful long and /or thick hair and wanted to have it all cut off. If your hairdresser is paying close attention and sees the lice, she is not suppose to cut your hair. After all, it is very easy to spread to other customers. Would you want to sit in a chair where someone before you had lice? I think not. Not only that but the lice will be within 1 inch from the scalp. If the nits are farther down the hair strand than that, they have had them for more than a week. Read up on lice on the internet and it will be very helpful. Good luck and God Bless

We had this problem at Christmas time and with 3 little ones I was concerned about toxicity after 2 rounds of the Rid/Nix chemicals not working and the pediatrician wanting to use something even stronger on them. (I guess the lice they had were resistant to the Rid and Nix products)

I did some investigating and the product we found is "Fairy Tales" removal mousse, repelling shampoo and repelling conditioner. It is not toxic like the insecticides, but is very effective. It actually helps loosen the glue that holds the nits to the hair and many of them wash out when you rinse the product out. It has Tee Tree oil, Rosemary essential oil and Lavendar essential oil.

My 2 preschool daughters were re-infested 2 times before we used this product and have been lice-free ever since the first evening using Fairy Tales. It is expensive, but 1 bottle of mousse lasted for all 3 kids' heads and I am still using the shampoo on them.

Good Luck to you! I know how exhausting the process can be!

PS Do NOT use Vaseline to coat the scalp. It is nearly impossible to get out of the hair and after washing with cornstarch and Dawn multiple times their hair will be very very damaged and fragile.

Cover the hair in olive oil, and tie a grocery bad around the scalp portion of the head, and let sit for 30 min, this will suffocate the lice. Then wash out the olive oil and dead lice, immediately pick all the nits out. You kid may be to young for this, I don't know. Choosing a shorter hair cut on a girl makes it easier. You can repeat this if for some reason you missed a nit and they are back. If you have a boy, you can just shave his head. Hope this helped!
