How much laundry does a typical family of four have? My husband and I plus our two kids ages 2 and 5 have a ton of laundry and I have a hard time staying on top of it. Right now I have more control on it than I have in 3 years. I find myself doing 4-6 loads a week. My kids usually only wear one outfit a day and since they take baths every night they usually are able to only go through 1 pair of pajamas a week as well. I change my clothes after work (I work with animals) and those get washed more frequently but usually it is the same uniform. The clothes I change into are usually yoga pants or comfy shorts and a T-shirt that I too will wear several days in a row as long as they aren't dirty. I don't often go out again after I get home so the only people that see me in the clothing are the family. My husband will do the same thing I do. I wash sheets about every 2 weeks but I didn't include that laundry in the number of loads I do. Everything we own is washable - Thank God I cringe everytime I think what our dry cleaning bill would be like. We don't have a high efficiency washer and dryer, although I would love one (can't afford it right now). My laundry pile never seems to get smaller. What do you do about it?

What can I do next?

We have 3 people. My husband has a job where he requires separate "work clothes" so he wears 2 outfits per day (sometimes he wears non-work clothes 2 days, then the occasional sweatshirt, etc. I wear 1 outfit per day.
Son wears O. plus a baseball uniform 2-3 times per week.
I could easily do a load per day. Then there are sheets, rags, rugs, etc....

I really do think it's better (like flylady rec's) to do O. load per day, "re-boot" the laundry first thing in the a.m. Then you don't get the dreaded "mountain" of laundry.

Wow, I think you are doing great. I do 4 or more loads per day, every day. We have a family of 5. 2 of my children have a lot of potty accidents which leads to a lot of the laundry. I never even thought to have the kids wear pajamas more than once without washing them, but I think I will be making an immediate change!

We probably do about 5 loads a week, not counting sheets. We're a family of 5, but I wash the baby's laundry separate for now.

I can't WAIT for my girls to do their own laundry, especially since as they get older I'm sure the amount of clothes they go through will quadruple. And mine are front-loaders so they can *already* reach the controls! mwhahaha

When we were a family of 4, I easily did 8-10 loads a week. I usually did laundry on Saturdays and it took all day. Our Saturday night activity was us folding clothes while watching TV (exciting life!). Later, when the older two moved out and we had baby, I switched to doing a load or two every day. Now with just daughter and me, I do two loads a week, plus an occasional load of towels/rugs or sheets.

I know some people hate the laundry chore, but I don't mind it. I enjoy the sorting and the folding of fresh clean clothes. My mother used to wash clothes for four kids and our Dad's farming clothes in our unfinished basement with concrete floor in a washtub, with a hand wringer, and hang them up to dry on the clothesline (in summer) and lines in the basement (in winter). The laundry I do is incredibly easy!

I do at least that much laundry each week for my family of four. My children wear one outfit a day (unless the weather changes drastically, which it sometimes does, or the baby has issues) and wear a new pair of PJs each night. Sometimes my oldest will go through three pairs of socks a day, because she hates them...she has them on to go somewhere, she takes them off and throws them in the laundry when we get home...and all of a sudden, we need to go somewhere or out to play. I only change children's sheets once every other week or so, but I change ours every three or four days and wash my husbands pillow with it.

There's always a ton of laundry in the basement. :) It never really gets much smaller...but I rotate and separate into four different bins (whites, light colors, dark colors, and towels) and that seems to keep me on top of it a little better.

I have about 10 loads a week. I cloth diapers but I don't count that (2 loads a week), but both kids are not taking diapers off at night so bedding is getting out of control. Our eldest is potty trained at night so that is no problem.

Hubby is military and a doctor, so he changes into scrubs as soon as he hits work, so that uniform is only really being worn for the drive to work. He really only makes underwear and sock laundery.

The eldest wears 1 outfit a day, unless playing dress up.

the middle one is potty trained but still had a little pee in his pants as he runs to the potty... sometimes.

the youngest is 1 and well, is 1. He self feeds so to cut back on laundry I just make him nakid (we live in Hawaii, so it is never so cold that eating without clothing is really an issue).

I am trying to look pretty for my husband every day when he comes home, but I M. not wear a new outfit everyday. It matters if some little one used my shirt as a snot rag...

I do more laundry than that, but I have a newborn now in addition to the two older kids, and just when things are looking up, my cat coughs up on a blanket. :)

I always figure that if something can't survive my washer and dryer (with a few exceptions--I hang some things up) it doesn't deserve to live in my house. We try to keep a load or two rotating every day but it doesn't get put away. I did start a sock bag that I toss ALL socks into until I see an immediate match when I'm folding. That makes it easier to find matches later since socks are one of those things that never make it into drawers. I don't match mine, so I don't care.

So while I know it's overwhelming, it actually sounds like very little laundry to me... And we do re-wear anything we can.

Ok, I am going to humble everybody. I am a Mom of one, (husband makes two ;) Between the 3 of us, not too bad....3-4 loads every 3,4 days.
Last Friday...it happened....my dryer bit the dust when drying a load of towels with another load behind in the washer (waiting its glorified turn)
Had to pack up and go to the local laundramat. It cost me 3 bucks in quarters to dry those two loads in one big machine.
While I was there, I sat and watched a Mom with FOUR young children, manipulate and FEED these machines with cash while I waited for my towels.
I am so like you!!! I am the laundry wench!!! but, I think about it....at least I can do MY laundry in MY machines, without quarters AND without lugging them to and fro the laundramat.....
....yes, it made ME feel a little bad. (for griping, that is)
But to answer your actual question? NO, there is nothing you can do to catch up!!! As long as those people you live with keep wearing clothes? You WILL have laundry!!!!!

Drives me insane.....

Lol. I go through about that much laundry doing mine, hubby's, and our 1 year old's. :)

Laundry sucks. I hate it as much as it hates me.

Just hold tight to the thought that soon your kids will be old enough to help with chores, and their laundry can be one of them! LOL!

Well to speed things up in the dryer so you aren't possibly waiting on it for so long, get wool dryer balls.
They bounce around in the dryer so that it creates are pockets to that they clothes aren't all bunched together. I have heard some people say that it cuts their drying time in half and saves them 25% electricity and cutting their bill.
here is an example of one

Now you do have to buy 2-4 of them, but it's worth it. It also will naturally soften your clothes and de-statics them, so the need for dryer sheets is out.
Just a suggestion to think about to make things a little easier. Oh and if you have a wool allergy, it wont affect you at all. And you can add scents to it, so it's 100% customizable to a smell you love!

I wash underwear and socks after one wearing, kids' shirts after 2 (unless stained with food), and kids' pants after they are really bad, grass-stained, or muddy. For adult stuff, we make do for 3-4 wearings except for workout clothes that get sweaty. Towels and sheets every couple of weeks. It sounds like you have a ton of laundry. Your kids are probably playing outdoors more now that the weather is much better but still, are you taking things off the floor and immediately throwing them in the hamper? That might not be necessary.

I am a SAHM, so I usually have the time to do laundry (our clothes specifically) daily. I normally have 1-2 clothes loads daily and towels I do about three times a week. I do sheets about every two weeks unless they really need laundering. This works well for my household and we have 4 people. Each of us changes clothes twice a day. I've tried doing all of the laundry once week, every other day, but then I found it takes more time than keeping up on it daily. As my kids get older, they help fold and put away clothes. By helping out, they realize that they cannot constantly change clothes and add to the laundry because they'll have to fold and put it away eventually.

We're a family of 5 and generate at least a load a day. I have a large capacity machine. My kids are 10,7 & 23 months plus my husband and I. As my kids get bigger so does their clothes so it takes me longer as less fits in the machine. When you've got towels from the bath and kitchen and everything it adds up fast. We don't use paper napkins and very few paper towels(we use those for the grossest of the jobs only). I am never ahead of laundry! It is my least favorite thing to do.

We have a family of 4 with a 15 month old and almost 4 year old. I probably do about 5-6 loads a week. I usually wash and dry when I get enough for a load, but I fold and put away all at one time. I will usually fold while watching evening tv with the kids in bed. I then put away what I can without going in the kids' rooms. I put all of theirs in a basket and put away the next day.

I tend to do 6-8 loads in one day (on the weekend), but the last week or so, I've been doing one a day throughout the week.

I have a 7yr old (8 next month) daughter, a 2yr old (3 in July) son, and my husband and I.

And I change sheets once a week. Towels every few days.

In the winter time I usually have a new load everyday because of the bulkier clothing. In the summer I can go almost a week because the shorts and tank tops take up a lot less space in the washer.

We are a family of 4 and have about the same amount of laundry as you. We tend to average more like 6 or 7 though, because both our kids do martial arts twice a week. So that is 4 uniforms to wash and the material in some of them is heavier/thicker so just those 4 can almost make up a load by themselves.
My husband is a casual runner, too. So he will get 3 or 4 sets of workout clothes Nasty each week. And his work schedule is unusual, so he will put on "normal" street clothes when he gets up, then change into running stuff, then shower, then put back on the street clothes, then change for work. He does NOT re-wear the worn street clothes the next day. They get put into the wash. :( And for some reason, I am the only person in our family of 4 that has no problems re-wearing a pair of PJ's. Everyone else is once and done. :(
Also, we tend to have company come stay with us in cycles... and that adds another set of sheets (or 2), bath towels for however many people and pool towels as well.

we are a family of 4 and I usually have to do about 4-5 loads per week. I just make a day of it and get it all over with. I start in the morning and finish it sometimes not until after dinner. But, once it's done, I don't have to think about it for another week

I have a family of 4. My girls are 4 and 21 months. I do laundry once a week. I normally do about 5 or 6 loads of laundry. It seems like I do more in the winter because the clothes are bulkier and I can't fit as much in the washer. I do wash towels more often. I think I do a load of them every couple of days. I also use cloth diapers, so I wash those every few days. I didn't include the towels or diapers in my 5-6 loads.

I do a load of just underwear and socks. A load of light colored clothes (2 girls=a LOT of pink!) and everything else gets thrown together and washed on cold.

I strip the beds every few weeks. More often in the summer, less often in the winter.

I keep threatening to make my family run around naked on laundry day. I dream of the day when every single piece of clothing is clean. Sadly, unless we join a nudist colony, it's not going to happen. Laundry and dishes are those chores that are never totally done.
