Jumping on the Potty Train

I am going to start the potty training process this weekend – I have delayed it long enough. My son is almost 3 and most of his daycare class is already potty trained, so I feel a little behind to say the least.

He asks to sit on the potty every day, but have never actually done anything while on the potty. He asks me to ready him the potty book, when we are done he says “all done” grabs TP and flushes. End of story. LOL

Last week we went shopping for big boy undies together and he was really exited about his Toy Story undies. Another mom recommended that I just start him in undies, and not go back. Put him on the potty every 30 min and he will have tons of accidents, but I should see some improvement by Saturday night…

What are your thoughts on this? Any other tips or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

PS – I have been telling him for a few days now that we are going to start the big boy undies and potty soon, so he is aware of this change.

What can I do next?

Yeah, that happened here too. My daughter "sat" on the potty sometimes, for a year and a half, without making a deposit. What I did with the second kid that worked better was about a month before he turned three, I put him in multi layer waterproof CLOTH training pants and took him to the real toilet every hour and a half. It took a couple of weeks before he started waiting to pee and poop til I took him to the toilet rather than going in his training pants. I feel that all the talking and preparing in the world does not make them understand. First they need to understand what really happens when you pee - you feel really wet, and disposable products dont' let that happen, they learn that in cloth diapers and cloth training pants. That gives them motivation, wanting not to feel wet and yucky anymore, and they start to learn what it feels like just before it happens. Taking him consistently throghout the day, not just occasionally, helps too (diapering for naps and bedtime is still fine of course).

We trained DS at 25 months - just put him in regular underwear and sat him on the toilet (regular toilet with Bjorn seat cover) frequently. Took about 2-3 days of frequent accidents, maybe a week of occasional ones. Then done. I assume he gets the idea since his friends are all trained so I would guess it will go quickly. Good luck.

Naked definitely works for some people but we gave that 1 day - DS was perfectly happy to pee all over our floors - liked to watch the stream and see where it landed.

I went through this same thing with my son. He would sit on there for what seemed like forever then get up and nothing. Finally, I set aside a few days that I committed to potty training. Put big boy undies on and went for it. He had accidents to start and then I would reinforce that was when he needed to sit on the potty. Then one time- bam! pee in the potty!! After that one time, he understood. Its a new sensation so its takes getting used to. I made a huge deal out of it of course. Then we continued to keep wearing big boy undies and putting him on the potty. Literally after a few hours he got it.
We also made a chart and after he went potty on the potty we put a sticker on it. Once he got up to 10 stickers, we went to the store and picked out a small toy.
Good luck and happy potty-ing

When he's at home, just leave him naked on the bottom.
Have a potty chair nearby in any room he is in.

At this stage/the beginning, they may not be able to hold their pee at all, nor long enough to get to the toilet.

It is really just a learning curve and them being ready and their physiological development being ready.

Just switching to underwear, will not 'guarantee' he will then be potty ready. Nor speed it up.

My son, (as most boys), are later in pottying. My son was 3, when he STARTED to, pee, on his own, in the potty chair. Then on his own, the frequency of it increased, as well as his 'ability' to do so, and per his body's cues and physiological development and brain awareness.
It all goes hand in hand.
