Is Pumpkin a Good First Food?

My son is 6 months and loves banana mango and apple sauce but I want to feed him more homemade veggies. I haven't used any jars and don't plan to. He is not wild about squash or sweet potato although we keep trying. We are also trying avocado and peas but they are not well received. :) we will keep trying!

What can I do next?

My doctor told me to start with the veggies since they are harder to get the kids to like and stay away from fruits for awhile. If they get use to the fruits it makes veggies more difficult to introduce. I think pumpkin is fine, but you may want to try to limit the fruits for awhile while you introduce veggies. I did this and my daughter is 19 months and actually requests peas every night for dinner. She has gone so far to get the veggie steamer out of the cabinet and ask for peas.

It's totally fine but as someone else mentioned if he doesn't like squash or sweet potatoes, probably won't go for the pumpkin. I made my food for both my kids too, so I'm a big supporter of it, but don't stress yourself out...use canned pumpkin! It's so much cheaper and easier than trying to skin the pumpkin and break it down yourself! As long as you get 100% pumpkin and NOT pumpkin pie mix you're fine. The same goes for applesauce...use unsweetened apple sauce from the jar. It is so much cheaper and easier! Give him time....I'm sure he'll eat all of those foods you mentioned soon! Congrats on this big step...it's one step closer to him feeding himself and honestly, that rocks!!! ;)

Pumpkin is great!! I made their baby food too. Corn and spinach together, broccoli, green beans, peas, carrots, butternut squash, sweet potatoes. I even pureed beef, pork, chicken, and turkey and mixed it in.

Good luck!!!

Keep trying with the orange foods....I know the process is oranges, greens, fruit and meats. Maybe if he doesn't like one kind of food, try cooking it different (ie: bake the sweet potato instead of boil it etc etc.). I did all my baby food and I really have no idea why people do jars, the food is gross! And I also worked, so it's not like I had all the time in the world...Good luck!
(also, if you get stuck figuring out what to cook, do go by the baby jar section to get ideas on what they mix. :)

At six months his tongue may not be up to taking in the food. Give him a little more time. It could also be something to do with texture of food that is causing him not to eat. As others have said pumpkin is in the squash family so be prepared for it not to be received very well. In another month or so it may be great.

Kuddos on your home made food.

My now 2 year old loved pumpkin. I made all of my own baby food too and she was really great at eating things when I mixed flavors. If yours isn't digging avacado but loves banana, try mixing them together. My little one loved it (and although it sounds disgusting I really liked it too!)

My DD's first veggie was sweet potatoes - she loved them and still does.

Straight pumpkin does not have a lot of flavor, I don't know how you would feel about adding some cinnamon to it or butter to make it more appealing. Also, it packs a ton of fiber, which can be a good thing but I wonder if you should hold off until he is older and bigger and try other veggies first. Sweet potato, squash, and carrots can all be cooked up and pureed.

Pumpkin is a squash and if you get the baking pumpkin it tends to be sweet so it's in tune with the normal baby taste buds. Just introduce it as you would any other food alone and in small doses and see what happens. My daughter started out on watermelon because she was a spring baby and teething when it was time to start real food. She liked to gum the watermelon and my pediatrician said if she likes it give it to her. Good luck!

I've always heard, and used, squash as a good first food. Since pumpkin is a type of squash, as long as you get the eating pumpkins, and not the carving pumpkins, it should be good.

Yes, absolutely! Our 10 month old boys love 3 parts roasted pumpkin with 1 part apple sauce with some cinnamon on it (which helps regulate blood sugar, too).

It should be great -and it's very good for you! However, if he doesn't like sweet potatoes, I would be prepared for him to reject pumpkin! Will he eat steamed carrot slices?
