Inside Lip Injury from a Drinking Straw

I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy about 12 days ago and while in the hospital they gave me a hospital mug with a straw from which I got a little injury to my upper lip (in the inside). I've been drinking water from that mug ever since and I tried to avoid touching the injury with the straw but sometimes when I drink water II touch it without realizing, so there is still inflammation on the inside lip skin and the skin of the inside lip looks like it was cut/torn. Does anybody have a tip on how to heal it and relieve the pain? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wild Woman I had what it looked like a blood blister but my doctor said it was actually a spider vein, and nothing to worry about. I'll stop using the mug, I actually have not used it in the past couple of days and hopefully the cut/inflammation will heal faster. I never thought that a drinking straw could cause an injury to the lip, but here I am...:)

Whenever I have a sore spot inside my mouth (bitten cheek, swollen gum, etc.), I gargle with plain hydrogen peroxide. That clears up any germs that might me lingering and speeds up the healing process. Usually, I'm pain-free by that night.
Good luck and congrats!

The injury has probably caused an ulcer. You need to leave it alone for it to heal, and as Turnip says, don't use the straw. You can use hydrogen peroxide on a q-tip to apply to it, or swish your mouth out with it (if you can stand the taste).

Most ulcers take a while to heal. You need to keep your mouth clean, so brush several times a day and drink plenty of water. So sorry.

Congrats on the birth of your son!

Congratulations on your baby boy!

wait - aren't you the one who had a purple spot on her tongue - like a blood blister while pregnant?

if you have a sore - stop irritating it!!! Maybe drink without a straw? Talk with your doctor about the sore. Show him/her and find out if there is an ointment that you can apply inside your mouth...

Other than that? Stop using the mug and the straw.

Good luck!

My older son once cut just behind his bottom teeth with a tostada. Since he has a bleeding disorder, the sucker would not heal. It was like a little blister inside his mouth. After using medication from the doc that did not help--every time he ate something, it broke open and swelled up--my husband had him rinse his mouth before and after school as well as at bedtime with Listerine. Just a quickie rinse since it was still a bit "hot" for him. Within 4 days, it was all healed and gone by the end of the week. Felt like we wasted a week and a half with the other stuff. We used the mint one.

I love drinking from straws. I have to cut down because they cause wrinkles around the mouth. At 54, I don't need to speed the process.

But, to answer your question--suck on ice the cold will numb the pain.

My FIL is in insurance and he is a freak about straws. He says they are dangerous and is always telling DH to never let the kids play with them. I guess there are many injuries including stabbing through the back of the throat with kids. He also hates trampolines. LOL

When I get a mouth wound (and they suck) I use Peroxal (over the counter mouth wound rinse). That and time are pretty much it.
