I'm sorry but most of the medicines on the market today scare me. Here is what I do when my son (4) has a cough and cold. Give him 1 teaspoon of local honey in the morning and at night before bed, use saline nasal spray, cold mist humidifier, warm bath or shower, and plenty of fluids. If it is truely just a cold there really is no medicine that will help.

My daughter has always taken that and she is 4! I havn't had a problem with it for her. It calms her cough down a little. Plus its just a bit more easier to have around when you your on the go.

I always ask our pedi before giving our kiddos any OTC meds they haven't had before. She's recommended dosages for some meds that say they aren't recommended for children under 2 yrs when our kids were babies, and others that say they are fine, she's given a no-go.
Dosages are always based on weight. My boys are both very big for their age (6 in a couple of weeks, and 10 mos), whereas my cousin (10) and my nieces (8, 5, & 7 mos) are all small for their ages. It makes a big difference!
The best thing I've found recently is our naturopath who can clear allergies & help with more natural remedies for things. They've actually inspired me to start studying naturopathy myself due to all the wonderful things they've done for me & my kiddos (the little guy & the baby on the way wouldn't even exist if not for them!). They are in the Heights if you're interested.

I would ask your pediatrician to insure the dose would be correct. It might be too high a dose for his age/size.

No. If he is coughing give him honey, elevate his head, if he has a very runny nose benedryl will help dry him up (check with the pharmacist or doctor for correct dose), use some vicks, and turn on a humidifier.
Edited: It does not really matter what age they are dosed for. Medication should be dosed for weight.

My kids are much older than 3 yrs and I don't know what age those are dosed for. What does the box say about dosage and age/weight? What about interactions? Does your child have/take anything that the box (triamincic strips) say should not be taken together? What has your doctor said?
