Info About Aspinwall

Can anyone give me information about living in Aspinwall? We have been househunting, mostly in the east end, but I keep wondering if we should consider this community.

My two main questions are 1) what would the commute time to and from Oakland be?
2) What are the schools like? Fox Chapel school district is rated one of the best in the state but is never comes up when discussing good districts with Pittsburghers. I have also heard that the kids fall into social groups based on family income and I'm not sure I want to put my kids in that kind of environment.

Anyone with firsthand or near firsthand experience?

Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
S.

Hi S.,
We lived in Oakland when we thought about moving to Aspinwall. We thought about the schools and the community and we decided to stay in Oakland. Our kids completed their schooling in the City of Pgh International Magnet program. Some of the things we thought about when we were considering the move, were that Aspinwall is such a small island,of a community safe probably, but so isolated. In Oakland, the kids walk or bike to everything -- school, ice rink, tennis, library, friends' houses. This has made them very independent. We thought about the school district certainly, but we also thought about the "other children" who come from much more opulent circumstances, and all that peer pressure. My three oldest daughters who are all over twenty years old never got a drivers license. I can assure you we were not going to gift them a car for their sixteenth b-day anyway, like some of the people we know from Fox Chapel. The three of them have made their homes in NYC.
I hope this gives you food for thought. Good luck with the decision that is right for you and your family. If you want to "talk" more, I am at ____@____.com

I think the commute to Oakland would be pretty doable. I live in Morningside and to get to Oakland with no traffic is maybe 15 minutes. We've made it to Magee or Children's in 20-30 mins during high travel times.

As far as being grouped into family income, I don't know if FC really does that more than any other district.

Hi S. -
My family and I just moved to Aspinwall last year. My Husband commutes to Oakland daily and during rush hour it takes him at most 30 minutes.

We enjoy Aspinwall, as it has a small town feel so close to the city. It is a safe, friendly community, with many activities for children. We highly recommend!

I cannot give you advice on the school district, other than it is top rated (another reason why we moved here)!

Good Luck

Hi S.,
I currently live in the South Hills, but grew up in the FC area. I would HIGHLY recommend the Fox Chapel School District! It can't be beat. I also lived in an apartment in Aspinwall for 5 years and commuted to Brookline and it was a smooth commute. Aspinwall is a great family-oriented town.
