Inappropriate Texts - Melrose,MA

I texted info about a meeting to a mom friend. Our daughters are friends. A reply came back mentioning the meeting, but calling me a name and with lots of profanity. I couldn't believe it. I got the message again. The mom called me and apologized saying it was her phone. Not her. Something was wrong with her phone. I don't think this is possible. She is angry with me for not believing her. Am I wrong? Can a phone do this?

***THe last line of her text was go f**k yourself.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wish I had asked this question sooner. I have an old phone and know nothing about auto correct. I have been agonizing over this for five days. I am going to take your advice. Thank you.

I have a slightly used droid..

It once texted "we are homosexuals". When I had tried to text "we are here" thank goodness I caught it. This was a text to a conservative client...

I had never used the word homosexuals on my phone....

It could happen. Autocorrect gets a lot of people in trouble.

I vote kids or auto-correct.

I had a friend earlier today post that she can't wait for "her eyes to ball when" her husband gets back (military deployment).

Um.... you mean "bawl"? I'd hate to imagine someone balling their eyes, ya know?

Is it possible she was dictating the text? I did that on my husband's new Iphone and didn't speak clearly and slowly enough and the text that got sent was hysterical. I don't think profanity but logically, why would your friend do this and then apologize and blame her phone? If she wants to cuss you out, for one she should have a reason and two, why then say it was her phone? What would be the point? Other possibility is it's her kids and then I guess that's between them.

It might have been autocorrect. Sometimes a word will autocorrect to something inappropriate. It happens. Considering she called you right away, it sounds like it was an accident. Forgive her phone for being dumb.

You absolutely should believe her. Autocorrect is a crazy thing. I once sent my friend asking her to pick up a bag of apples and the text that I sent actually said, ".......pick up a Promotionalkittenbasket." Not profanity, but still weird!
Or the time that I was making pizza and replied to a text that asked if I needed ingredients, saying that I had some minipepperonis and my phone sent the text saing that I had some "ubersexual". It was unnerving.

The people that you showed the text to are sorely misinformed. Please give your friend the benefit of the doubt.

Depending upon the phone she has - it's ENTIRELY possible. Some of the "smartphones" out there - type the words for you...you start typing fu....and it will insert a word...it's happened to me....not with the "F" bomb but other words...

I would NOT necessarily blame her...she could be texting and not paying attention to what she has sent until AFTER she sends it...I've done that...too...Jo W can tell you - "is that YOU or your phone"??? I've botched some texts...it happens.

give her the benefit of the doubt.

In the absence of other evidence, I would believe your friend. If there is a history of insanity (maybe your friend is a certain MP poster we all love?) then that's another story.

I got a message from a freind once that said (and I only quote) " I have french b***h in my freezer A hole" ok I cut the naughties. She then showed me what she meant to say. Sometimes you can train your phone some words and it auto types them. Mind you this was a situation where you speak into the droid and it writes it...

What she meant to say was "I have the french fries in the freezer with (her daught's) doughnut holes.

Yes a phone can do that. My phone will always spell stoopid instead of stupid because that is how I type it more than usual. :p I tend not to swear in texts so other than ducking idiots you won't see my phone do that.

My point is if you swear a lot in texts your phone will assume that is what you are saying if you use swipe or have one of those older that death phones that auto fills.

Why don't you believe her? That would be my first question.
Do you have any reason to believe she would text profanity to you?

Was one of her kids playing on her phone? Do you think she's the kind of person to want to stir up drama by sending a nasty text and then denying it?

The whole things sounds like a whole lot of crazy. I guess you have to decide if you want to be friends, be mad or be right. I'll be interested to see...

(and maybe one of her kids did do it, but she doesn't want to have that discussion with you? I don't know...)

Well... auto-correct has been blamed on some really stupid things.

EDIT: My own auto-correct has done some very, very weird things. I have to immediately send, "Stupid auto-correct! Sorry! I meant to say _____" embarrassingly often.

Since she called you and apologized, I would let it go. I have never heard of such a thing. Maybe she was drunk when she wrote the text? Maybe she was telling someone else to F**k themselves and accidently wrote it to you. Sometimes I am in the middle of 2 texts or more when a bunch of ppl are texting me. I am always worried that I will say the wrong thing to the wrong person

You have to remember, today's phones are really just small computers. There are people out there that write viruses for them. I do not know of one that does this specifically, but it completely possible.

If there was one or two "swear words" in the text that could have easily been replaced with a different word that would have made more sense... Ya, I would believe it.

But a bunch of different swear words calling you names? Eh... Not so believable.

If she was using the autotext feature, it's entirely possible. I have nearly sent "wierd" texts before as well b/c if I power it down and turn it back on it "defaults" to autotext.

Really, a phone will autocorrect into profanity?

My experience has been that the darn phone wouldn't LET me swear. Somehow it didn't know the words f**k or s**t. But that was my dumb phone. I just got a smart phone last week for the first time, and haven't tried those words yet.

Let me see...okay just tried it. For once, the phone let me type the f word and the s word. However, I couldn't get it to autocorrect into those words.

I think you just need to let this be one of those things that remains a mystery, and accept the mom's word for it. It's not worth the bad blood to harp on it, since your kids are friends.

I don't think she would have called you if she was trying to call you bad names. She would have probably just left it alone!!! And auto correct is bad about stuff like that.

I actually don't think your friend is very nice. Being mad at you because you have a hard time believing "go f**k yourself" just magically appears when you don't know anything about autocorrect?

Sorry, but I don't think she's much of a friend. She should not be mad at you.
