I have wavy very thick hair, frizzy when it dries naturally and if I blow dry it takes forever. Its always been shoulder length and I always end up wearing a pont tail.I would like to go shorter but I am afrais of losing my pony tail, I think its my security blanket!!!!
Im a mom who doesnt have the time to have perfect hair everyday.

Take Grandma T's advice and go to an Aveeda Salon....they are fabulous plus you get a free hand massage, aromatherapy, etc.

OMG I love Grandma T's answer!
You just gave me the biggest laugh ever today! :) Thanks!

My hair is like that...VERY thick, naturally wavy and frizzy... more so at certain times.
Everyone compliments me on my hair. But it drives me nuts-o.

I have had it, all one length, long.
I have had it layered, long hair.
I have had it short and layered.

But the KEY thing, is to go so a Hair Stylist... that CAN handle that kind of hair and the way your hair texture is... otherwise, a junk stylist will screw it up. That is what happened to me once. So... I ONLY go to a stylist, that CAN handle hair that is THICK, wavy, and tends to get frizzed.

Also, I only air dry my hair. Which can take literally 8 hours to dry, naturally. BUT, I also let my waves kick in. I don't try to tame it or make it stick straight. Too much maintenance to do that. I don't have time.
So, now currently... I have a shoulder length layered cut.... that looks nicely "tousled." And free form. Just like after shaking my head after getting out of the beach.

If anything, I use leave-in hair products, like Garnier Fructis... either leave-in conditioners or hair 'smoother' creams. It is not heavy nor oily feeling and it makes my hair... less frizzy.

all the best,
Susan

Me Too! Seems like when I do get a new style it looks great at the salon but never again after that. I am such a ponytail girl as well. I think it is easier to leave it long so it has some weight to help keep it down. Sorry no advice, just empathy.

I cut mine just under the chin the other day for the same reason. It looks cute, but it's just long enough for a tiny ponytail if I'm in a hurry.

Just be careful with layers... might get "bigger" and less manageable. Mine is wavy and thick. I have cut it and liked it for about 2 weeks, then hated it. This time, I actually went the other direction... let it grow (trim the ends) and then you can put it up if you need to, but the weight helped the puffiness. Find a good hair stylist who can help you understand how different cuts will look w/ your hair type and can match it w/ how much time/effort you have to work with it each day. Have fun with it!

I'm in the SAME boat and with two little ones, there is no time for drying (it takes me almost an hour!!!). I'm going to the salon in two weeks and trying a Brazilian blowout. I've heard great things!! It doesn't straighten your hair, but it supposedly gets rid of frizz so that you can let it air dry without turning into a frizz ball and if you want to dry it, it cuts the time in half.I don't want to cut mine any shorter than shoulder length because I too am completely dependent on a ponytail :)

The blowout is pretty expensive, but if it allows me to have manageable hair, I think it will be worth every penny!

Have you used product? I have thick and wavy hair and I have to use some sort of product. Any product will do. I like using leave in conditioner because then it doesn't have that 'product' feel. I also LOVE Herbal Essence Tossel my softly mousse. LOVE IT. Smells amazing and also doesn't have that crunch. Try it and you too will probably love it!!

Go to the salon and get some bulk taken out. I did this and my hair was so different. Less frizzy, more manageable, looked really healthy! You will have to get some cut off, to make it more healthy. A good hair stylist can do a lot, even just taking a little off. I use a product by TIGI called, SMOOTHING LUSTERIZER. It's a defrizzer and tamer. It's pretty expensive, but a little goes a long way and it lasts a long time. It is the BEST product for frizzy hair!!

Former hairstylist here -- w/ thick, wavy hair! DON'T do the Brazilian Blowout -- they ALL contain formaldehyde or a form of it, generally aldehyde.

What you need is a great leave-in conditioner to tone down the frizz and help you form the curl. Never over-dry (air dry) your hair once out of the shower before adding the leave in conditioner. Squeeze out the moisture, wrap in a towel for literally 10 seconds max, comb out, add the conditioner, then start gently scrunching the product into the curls, forming curls as you do it. Don't overwork the hair or the frizz will start! If I have time, then I'll use a diffuser on my hair to lock those curls in, but I don't dry my hair even half way, I just get those curls locked in place.

My length is just above my shoulders right now w/ light, long layers and a long, sweeping bang. BTW, I use Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In Cream. Good luck!

Me too, know that you are not alone. What if you have some layers, then see how you feel.
