So my hubby and i were getting gas the other night and got $72 in gas....(this was last thursday).... so on sat. we went to the ATM to check our money and we had more in there than we should, so we have been racking our brains trying to figure out what was going on.... so last night i call to get a list of our last transactions and when it got to that night it said debit of $1.... so somehow we were only charged $1 for $72 in gas!!! so my question is, has this happened to anyone? what should i do? can they recharge me after all this time? this is just stressfull....... thanks

What can I do next?

I believe it will eventually show the correct amount in a few days....mine always does this when I buy gas.

This happens frequently. Gas stations charge $1 immediately for the gas and a few days later the correct amount will show up. Don't worry...they will get their money. :)

It's a pending charge. Funny how it showed up as one dollar. Here in Minnesota the pending charge is usually $25 - $50 over and above the amount. The first time that happened I thought my husband was going to throw up!

It'll be on there tomorrow. The $1 is just a pending charge -- a check by the station's point of sale system to make sure your card was valid, etc. The $72 will be on there when they "batch out" their credit machine.

To authorize the debit of gas, they have to authorize $1, but when the transaction slip is turned in, they will debit you $72. If you look, your available balance will be less than your actual balance.

It is very common for pay at the pump transactions to only show up as $1 at first. It can take as long as a week for the actual to show up with your bank.

Most likely that was just an authorization amount to test your account. Sometimes my gas purchases don't even show up as pending for several days. When you say "recharge" that doesn't make sense. You would essentially be stealing if they didn't charge you the full amount. It's most likely that the full charge is coming through any day now. Do you keep track of your deposits/purchases? That's the best way to keep on the up & up.

It is a pending transaction. Once it clears, they will charge you the full amount, GUARANTEED! I'm not sure why some of them take so long to go through, but it will likely clear by tomorrow.

The $1 is just the hold on your account until the full $72 goes through. Think of it the same way you would if you had written a check, i.e. that money is already spent!

with my credit union, if you use your checkcard as "credit" at the pump, it will do an authorization of $26, but if you use your checkcard as "debit" at the pump, it will take out the exact amount right away.

As with all the other responders... Yes, the full amount will be taken out, this can take up to two weeks...

And some unsolicited advice: Gas Station pumps are not safe places to use a debit card. Identity thefts and scammers can install cameras/scanners on the card reader to get your card's data. To protect your card, only use a debit card when it is 100% in your view and a trusted swiping location. Cash or credit cards are better at gas stations.

first of all i would make it right. get a copy of your statement and check it out. then go to the store and ask them if the plan to bill you later or you could wait till the end of the cycle and then go to the store with your new statement and tell them what happened and they may tell you to just forget about it. i wouldn't spend that money until this is cleared up. just count it as an outstanding check.

Yes the charge is still pending for the $72, but I just wanted to add that the $1 debit that you see isn't actually a "charge" or a "hold" per say, it's just a test that the gas stations do to check that the card is active and has available funds. Many gas stations, especially smaller ones, don't process their charges everyday, sometimes waiting and processing 3 or 4 days at one time. So it may take a few days for your bank to even see the debit to your account. When the charge does hit your account, it will only be for the $72 and the $1 debit will go away. ALWAYS keep a record of debit card transactions, just the same as you do when you write checks. I used to be a teller, and I cannot tell you the amount of people out there that just use the ATM screen as their record. There are many ways that the balance the ATM screen shows you can be inaccurate. Please be careful, overdraft fees can eat you alive.

until it actually clears in your account, it will say $1. At least that's how my bank does it.

Gas stations usually only authorize $1 for your gas purchase. Once they process their receipts, they will deduct the $72 from your account and the $1 will remain as pending.

I know US Bank does that for some reason. It always shows $1 when the gas amount is pending, then when it clears, it shows the correct amount you paid for your gas. This only happens when it comes to gas with US Bank. So I guess it depends on your bank.

As someon stated below it's an authorization charge. You are still going to see the $72.00 come through but they have placed a "hold" on the money and due to banks and regulations your bank may have it only appears as pending and not posted.

I got mine at Lands End and it sounds similar to what you are describing. I think it hides my belly well and it gathers at the top so it makes my large bust look 'ok' too. It is the Beach Living Dot Scoop Tankini when you look up landsend.com You can return it to Sears if it does not fit without having to pay return shipping. If you call them they can help size you. Very cute and they have underwire in them for larger breasts which is even better. not sure if you need that. I think it was $70 or $80, can't remember.

You can even buy the bottoms elsewhere to save money or maybe you have some. I bought the blk and white polka dot and the solid black bottoms.

yes, theywill charge you. When you swipe your card at the pump, sometimes it just verifies and puts a $1 hold on the card and then hits you for the actual amount once the station does the final deposit. It happens alot when tipping as well. They run the card for the original $30 of the meal immediately, but the amount updates to $37 a couple days later to include the tip.
