My 4 yr old daughter is having a "pink and purple" party. It's not being given at mealtime but I would like to have table of snacks and goodies for adults and kids alike to much on. I know the easy stuff like salsa, strawberries, grapes, jello, pink lemonade and strawberry milk. Does anyone have any more creative ideas? Anyone have experience with food coloring? What foods color well? Thanks everyone.

What can I do next?

Mini bagels with fruit flavored cream cheese (strawberry and blueberry). Even the flavored bagels like cranberry and blueberry.

Beets will color pasta pink. They have a strong flavor, but if you just use them for the coloring and add something else for the flavoring, it works. Might be healthier than a lot of food coloring.

When you serve salsa, you should look for the purple chips. Pink grapefruit also came to mind. And look for My Little Pony gummy snacks.

purple cabbage coleslaw
pink cupcakes
salmon is pink :)
so are those imitation crab things - you could put some on toothpicks with a piece of swiss or mozz cheese.

Things that are fair in color color well. That includes bread, pasta, mashed potatoes, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream.

Good luck to you and yours,

You can make colored cupcakes (mini for snack.....not sure of your cake though), cookies, tunafish or chicken salad can be colored with food coloring. You could color fruit or veggie dip, not sure what happens if you soak apples in food coloring?

Sounds like fun.

Cherry salad, aka, pink stuff! At least at my house!

1 can Cherry pie filling, 1 can eagle brand milk, 1 Can pineapple tidbits,
Mix together and then fold in 1 tub of cool whip. You can have chopped nuts in it too if you want.

What? It's not healthy? ;)

Purple cauliflower is fun (and delicious if you roast it with some garlic powder, salt and pepper).

You can buy the rainbow goldfish. I know it's not all pink but colorful.

I agree with the fruit dip. Also some blue corn tortilla chips, which look like a dark purple. Color the pasta in pasta salad.

I think you can buy specialty M&Ms in certain colors - depends on how much time you have before the party.

If you have a specialty candy store in your area (often in malls), you might look for things there. Sometimes there are wrapped candies in colored foil.

Purple peppers with a dip?

Watermelon - you could put small chunks on long toothpicks and alternate with other fruits. You could get the long toothpicks with the frill on the end in the colors you've chosen - probably at the local party store. Use a half of a seedless watermelon (after you've scooped out the fruit to use) upside down on a platter, then poke holes in it with a skewer, and insert the fruit picks so it looks kind of like a porcupine with the fruit standing up. You should wash the outside of the watermelon because the edible food will be touching it.

You could make a potato salad using those purple skinned potatoes - cut them up and leave the peel on - just like they do with red potatoes. I know that's more "meal like" and are having the party not a mealtime, but it's also not a sweet or artificially colored snack.

A friend made cute snacks with the frozen phyllo cups, and put cream cheese in them with a few small pieces of fruit on top. You could maybe put food coloring the cream cheese and then top with a half of a raspberry or a strawberry. You could use whipped cream too - not sure if you can put food coloring in the homemade version, if it will still whip.

But watch all the food coloring - some people have problems with the dyes.

Good luck!

Purple potatoes, purple cabbage for coleslaw, beets. Why use food coloring when there are real foods that have those colors? I know these aren't "kids foods" but they might be willing to try in the spirit of the color theme
