I Need Some Suggestions on What to Put in My Baby's Hair

First let me say that this is NOT cradle cap, she had that chronically for the first 5-6 months but this is different.

The lil girl's scalp is breaking out no matter what I've tried putting in her hair. I have to put something in it, she's got very dry hair that will break off if I don't use something but everything so far (including pure mineral oil!) has made her break out within a day with tiny little bumps like zits. By day two, her scalp is covered in yellow crust.

Here's what NOT to suggest, please, as I've already tried it:

Baby Oil, Mineral Oil, Olive oil, Baby Lotion, Aveeno, I even found this cream for African American baby's hair that also made her scalp break out.

I can't even use Baby Shampoo, I use the Head to Toe wash to wash her hair, it's the only thing that has not made it break out, but I just need something to put in her hair afterward to keep it from drying out. Isn't there a leave-in conditioner for baby's hair that has very pure ingredients?

Thanks Ladies...

So What Happened?

5/1/08 - Another update -- this stuff has been a life saver! My baby's hair is SO HEALTHY and is growing like crazy now that it's not breaking off from being dry and/or pulled out by the lil girl because her scalp was so itchy. I LOVE IT, hope this helps some of you!

4/15/08 - Okay here it is -- if anyone out there has had the same trouble as me, pay attention -- this stuff I bought, "California Baby® Super Sensitive™ Hair Conditioner", is amazing. Her scalp has not broken out since I started it about a week ago -- AND, as a bonus, when I rinsed it off my hands it actually RINSED, RIGHT OFF MY HANDS, not one bit of greasiness. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

thanks to you all for your help! The web site is:
http://californiababy.com/index.html (sorry, I don't know how to get links in here, if anyone knows, please share it with me).

I also want to say I really appreciate those of you who pointed out to me that the oils I was using was clogging her little pores and keeping the condition active -- thanks! That's what got me on the right track to finding the right answer.

Have you tried Head and Shoulders. My daughter never really had cradle cap, but around 8 months or so she got this nastey orange/yellow stuff on her scalp. The only thing that worked was head and shoulders shampoo (you have to use it for a couple of weeks). Good Luck.

It could be a fungal infection, like yeast, or some sort of allergy. Definitely ask the doctor before using a medicated shampoo on her scalp (although if that's the case with her, it's probably exactly what they will recommend.)

If it's not a medical skin condition, you could try a few other things. What about a light misting of a detangling spray when you are combing through? That way you get the conditioning on the hair and the scalp is not affected because the ends are treated.

& when you say "break" do you mean pull out of the scalp roots and all, or brittle/breaks mid-hair? Is it curly? Do you use a wide-toothed comb on it when it is wet? Or do you wait until it's dry to brush it out? Curly hair is more brittle because of the shape of the strand. If it falls out at the roots when you brush it, there is probably a fungal thing going on or a diet thing that needs to be examined. If it's happening mid-strand, she may just have some brittle hair and she's very young, so she might grow out of it. If it's persistently brittle hair, that's another thing to bug the doc about and see if there is something you could do to improve the hair follicle from the roots, since the rest of the hair is already dead and there's nothing you can do to really improve the "strength" of hair once it's visible. But keeping the cuticle of the hair strong may require a combination of methods if you are really worried about it.

J.,
When my daughter was that age, baby shampoo made the problem worse, From the sound of it you are putting two much oil on her, and going the opposite direction. Kind of like acne, where you think, I'm too dry, so you use a ton of lotion instead, and cause more breakouts. Try using a very moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Back to basics makes a vanilla plum shampoo and conditioner that I love, and it makes my brittle hair have a lot more elasticity.
I take medication that makes my hair brittle at times.
The other thing I do is rinse really, really well. Kind of like when you get a perm, and you feel like they are going to drown you before they finally finish rinsing.

My girlfriend's baby had the worse cradle cap I have ever seen. It was yellow and about 2 inches thick. His head was very sensitive to anything she used to take care of it. The only thing she found to work was Neutrogena's Tgel shampoo. It took a while for it to clear up but it worked.

Good luck,
T.

Hi. I agree with the others about seeing a pediatrician to rule out things the medical profession can address. My daughter is mixed and I've been having a hard time managing her very dry hair. I've had several people highly recommend Carol's Daughter - a line of hair and beauty products. I put in an order and am hopeful. Perhaps you should check out her line as well.

Hi there-

My 2 year old has very curly hair that tends to also be dry and MUST have product in it after the bath. The best thing I've used so far is a conditioner I bought at Whole Foods called Nature's Baby Organics Conditioner and Detangler. The bottle says, "Pure and certified organic ingredients". Maybe something like this might work? The scent is vanilla tangerine, and it works well in helping me get a comb through the curls.

First of all, congratulations!

We use a baking soda paste to wash our hair and then rinse with apple cider vinegar. We wash our son's hair (4 months old) with just the baking soda paste, no vinegar (I think he is too young because it can sting if there are any scratches on the scalp.) I must admit we have only ever used this on straight hair, so I don't know how it would fare with any other variety. I would also recommend, although it will be messy, using pure vitamin E to treat the dry scalp. Perhaps you could look for a product that is vitamin E based that isn't quite as thick as the real thing. Some of the other products you mentioned contain chemicals or are petroleum based, your baby girl may just be very sensitive to these and a more natural product might work.

I would take her to the doctor first to rule out anything serious (mineral and vitamin deficiencies, etc.), then try the baby products made by DHC (dhccare.com). They also have a natural "hair oil" product which is olive oil based, but is much lighter and more pure. Good luck!

There is a product that is "Pure, Safe & Beneficial". It's Arbonne. All of their products are botanically based, no mineral oil, no animal products (or by-products), is PH correct and is dermatologist tested.

They have a baby care line, ABC (Arbonne's Baby Care) this is awesome; many of my friends who have younger children swear by it. It comes with a 45 day money back guarantee, plus I can show you how to get it for a discount.

If you would be interested in a presentation to learn more, you can earn free products, too!

Have a great day!
