We live in the New York, New Jersey area. We are unemployed like many of you moms up there!
We have a son who has allergies (cow's milk) vitamin, nutritional deficiencies that were caused by the milk blocking the nutrients. They also caused low immune system due to the lack of nutrients. He is a late talker and very hyperactive. I like the biomedical approach and took him to a DAN doctor in upstate but he does not take any insurance and is so expensive, $800 initial visit, plus $400 in lab tests, follow up visits $395 even on the phone, supplements $150 a month. We live messages for him with quick questions to answer and he never calls back. I feel like I am taking my son to a low budget public clinic in my nearest town.
Does any mom up there please knows a DAN doctor who takes insurance or at least is not so damn expensive? a Doctor who returns a quick call? who is able to call the patient back if there is a question? Am I asking too much? We have been trough so much as a family with this.
I know is late at night but I had to get this out of my chest!!!! And ask about a good, compassionate and caring DAN doctor referral in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut area that any of you Mons can referred me to PLEASE! and Thanks to all you for reading my question!!!!!

What can I do next?

Sorry I don't have any info on the doctor, but just a comment/question on the insurance. You say he doesn't "take" insurance - can't you just file a claim with your insurance company on your own? Unless you are on an hmo, you should be able to do this with the info from the doctor. For those who are questioning why a doctor doesn't take insurance, there are many reasons, and it has nothing to do with being suspicious or fraudulent. If a provider is a solo practioner, filing and handling claims is time consuming. Many will provide a detailed statement listing the codes, costs, etc. for the patients to file themselves. Also, a lot of doctors are not in particular insurance plans (being a preferred provider) because their reimbursement rates are too low.

wow! Some of the fees are wild, some are okay....like the lab tests. BUT for a doctor not to take insurance makes me question his ethics. You know there are cases where insurance companies refuse to allow "certain" doctors from being a part of their group....something to think about.

As for your angst over the dr not returning your calls......you're not on his speed dial! Very few drs actually return calls personally, allowing their staff to handle all communications. In the past 24 years of raising kids, I've only had 2 drs call me personally....all other info was passed on by staff.

& are you aware that to receive the DAN designation, a doctor only has to attend a 1-day seminar? If you check out the website (http://autism.com) for The Autism Research Institute, they do have a provider list....but only until the end of this year. At that point, they will be discontinuing the database. Time to start researching.....before the list is gone. Peace.

If you are on some type of insurance, call the provider or look on line for a list of physicians that are on the list. If your kids are on CHIPS or Medicaid, you can also contact the local children's hospital and see if they have a list of doctors that might meet your needs. The DAN doctors receive training on autism, I don't know if that meets the classification "of medically sound/proven therapies where those services are routinely reimbursed by insurance. Until some therapies are "proven" by the medical establishment, many insurance companies balk about paying for them. That doesn't mean that they are not valid therapies, it means they don't have enough evidenced based information to approve. I think you could google DAN doctors in your state and get a list. You could compare this to the list you got from the insurer and then call those doctors to find out their policies. There are some doctors (primarily solo practicioners) who are opting out of insurance because of low reimbursement rates, paperwork, and poor leverage in negotiating contracts with the big insurers.

Hi,

I am sorry that you are having such a bad experience with this doctor. Many things you said came up to me as red flags. It sounds like he is taking advantage of you and your money greatly. I would go to another doctor--allergists are wonderful at dealing with allergies and food issues etc. It is not normal for a reputable doctor to NOT take insurance. The fees you are being charged are astronomical and unacceptable. The fact that you are calling with questions and the doctor doesnt have the decency to call you back or at least schedule an appt to discuss the issues, is not professional. Go to a regular allergist--old school style and you will be MUCH happier. GL

Dr. Sheer at Northport Wellness has been an amazing doctor for us. He takes insurance and is on Long Island. He answers email quickly and I have been put on hold and he picks up the phone. I don't know where you are located but we live over an hour away and I think it is well worth the trip. Good Luck!
