How to Keep My Active Baby from Hitting His Head on the Crib and Waking Up

My almost 11 month old goes to sleep in his crib with no problem, but he is so active in his sleep, he hits his head on the side of the crib as he tosses and turns and then wakes up and cries. We have a breathable crib bumper on all 4 sides, but I guess it is not padded enough. I often find him laying horizontally with his head and feet pressed up against either side of the crib (usually crying in distress because of it). Has anyone had this same problem and come up with any good solution?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Padded bumpers saved the day! (well, saved the NIGHT really!) Thanks Moms! He's been sleeping soundly for 6 months now. Ahhhhhh....

You could fold up blankets and put them between the bumper pad and the crib to give it more cushion. I suggest a light weight adult size blanket.

My kids always had padded bumpers with no problems. Your son is past the age where he could suffocate on a crib bumper, so get a padded one so his head has protection.

We got a regular bumper for our son. We just tied it higher than normal leaving 2-3 inches of space from the bottom. Our son was ending up with his head in the corner (didn't matter which one). One night we heard him crash into the railing and came running in... he was still asleep lol and managed to get his arm and his foot through the rails. We removed the bumper recently, but while it was in there it did its job. Now it seems like our son knows his boundries with his crib. He still inches towards the corners, but no more crashing :) Hope this helps... Good Luck!!!

Now that your child is almost a year, you could get regular bumpers. He should be fine..

And I thought my Lucas was the only crazy kid that did that.I have always used regular bumpers and I know you are not really "supposed" to but it has worked so he doesnt hurt his head. Sometimes I look at him and cant understand how he could possibly be comfortable but he stays asleep.Good luck!

Unfotunately I think they just have to learn. my son is active and does the same thing. I figure at some point he's going to figure it out.

My son did this too. I was paranoid about the padded bumpers, so what we ended up doing was using cardboard - from the box his crib came in, actually - around his mattress as bumpers. It wasn't beautiful, but it did the trick.

We changed the bumper from breathable to 'padded' once our baby was flipping over and able to push himself up - around 6 months. I would suggest changing bumpers.

We just dealth with this problem last week. Our 11 month old is also a toss and turn sleeper and we too had the breathable bumper. We figured he is old enough now for the threat of suffocation to be less than the threat of hitting his head on the side of the crib. So, we took off the breathable bumper and replaced it with the padded one that came with his crib set. All is now right with the world. Good luck.
