I have Reading Phonics from Scholastic. I am a daycare provider and I have 3 and 4 yr olds. I think anything educational is healthy for children to get a a jump start for school.
Good Luck, and don't spend alot of money when reading to your children and getting simple activites are just as good.

I used Hooked on Phonics with a little boy I used to nanny for. It was a good program. I teach kindergarten in Minnapolis. Here are some things that would greatly help your little guy succeed in school...
Knowing the alphabet letters and sounds *if he sees a B being able to say that is a B and the sound is /b/
Being able to rhyme - hear it and produce it
Being able to hear the first sound in spoken words
Book skills - front of the book, where we start reading, tracking left to right
Hooked on Phonics teaches these skills...you could also use regular books. Good luck!

It takes a huge time commitment from yourself, so if you have the time I think it's really good. I have 3 right now so I don't have the time to spend. Thankfully we got it on sale, so I don't feel like I totally wasted alot of money. And it still might come in handy.

Hi H.,

I have three grown children who I started many years ago. They really enjoyed the program. My daughter now a teacher started when she was 4 and before I knew it she was reading before we knew it. Also she made it play time fun once she caught the concept and began showing her sister then 3 the books and it became one ot thier play time activities. Both were advanced in pre-school and early readers. both given a fun headstart enjoyed school! We made a point to make learning fun! My second child is an intensive care nurse going on to to be a dentist. She still has the philosphy that learning is fun and thus continues to be successful in all she does.Make it FUN at this age make it your special time and use stickers for rewards!! I suggested it to my nieces and nephews who have children and they like it too! they have early readers as well.

We bought hooked on phonics years ago. It is a wonderful teaching tool for reading and spelling. It is a game where any level of reading and spelling can play and learn. It's worth the investment.
