Have You Had It with Wal-mart??? VENT on Their Price Matching Lies!!!

okay I coupon, an since walmart price matches etc I decided to go there yesterday and try them out. I usually go to
publix or kroger. But was like why not try wal-mart. I called them yesterday and asked if they did price match stores / the stores i would be using before i drove there to do my shopping, They told me yes, after I got done and at checkout I had no issues it was great. Got all my stuff and really only had to pay $4.00 So needless to say happy, even the cashier was nice. Well today was a different story!!! I had the worst cashier, that told me they would not price match the other store! and called a CSM over to talk to me, she told me they only price matched up to a 15 miles, well I told her then why was yesterday okay but not today, She told me that they were wrong, Then told me that they did price match this other store and it was 20 miles away. She could not keep her story together! so another CSM comes over and says its up to 50 miles the 3rd CSM said 20, So they do not even know what there policys are. Well after complaining that yesterday was okay and not today they said since i already had my stuff I could this last time. The cashier was horriable to me that i made them get managers involved and was rude the whole time. So I get home read walmarts policy online and it states any local competor. but does not state the mileage. On their TV ads it just states any competetior, So I call up 1-800-walmart. There the lady was nice, but told me that walmart lets the store manager decide where to price match. So i go you are a corperation, and you let each store have different policys? Then you need to state that information online. This is false advertising. Your TV ad states one thing, your online another and now your telling me that you do it by each store? Then there is no policy on the front doors that has any information states about where you do and do not allow price matching? Seriously this is sad. If you are going to state information online then your company needs to up hold it. And then your cashiers etc should be nice instead of this is a waste of my time, leave me alone attitude.
Have you had any issues with walmart price matching? or using coupons? Am i wrong with being upset about this, or do you think
they should up hold their policys?

Thanks for sharing!

I did have to run into a WalMart here in Calgary recently. I avoid it at all effort, but sometimes it's the only place open.

I was in a hurry between dropping off and picking up kids late. I picked up less then 12 items so go in the 12 items or less line. And there was only one man in front of me, but his cart was loaded. I could tell he was in his 80's, so probably not very up on the line rules. I thought, no problem, just one guy, it'll go quick. NO. The cashier offers the WalMart credit card with the % savings if he buys it right then. He clearly says, 'Well, it probably won't be approved due to my age.' But the cashier doesn't speak English well enough to understand him, and doesn't get his response, so she goes ahead and starts the credit card application - in the 12 item or less express check out - I start timing it to see how long it takes...it took over 10 minutes, until I finally spoke out loud and asked so all others could hear me (because I'm 52 and don't care anymore what people think)..."Are you selling a credit card in the express check out? Really? WHY? The guy is 83 years old and he said NO. But you went ahead anyways." The mans says, I told her no. The cashier says, "We have to. We're supposed to offer it." I said, NO, your supposed to be checking us out. You're supposed to be a cashier. We're not in line to buy credit cards, in the express check out. We're in the express check out line to get out of here quickly. I've timed you. It's been 10 minutes and do you see all the customers who have line jumped. NO, you are being coerced and forced by WalMart to sell credit cards. Do you get a commission for selling credit cards?" Well, then the manager was over there, Miss, Miss you can leave a complaint in the complaint box." And I said, what so you can burn them up? NO.....And then she finally started checking my stuff through and before she could even ask I said "And don't even ask me if I want a credit card. The answer is NO. " She did not say another word to me. But, another cashier winked at me - intentionally.

I HATE THAT PLACE.

I have a foolproof way to be sure this situation will never happen to you again. Stop shopping at Walmart.

Watch the High Cost of Low Prices, an excellent documentary on exactly how Walmart has decimated local small businesses throughout America. You'll learn how they practice anti-union business, pay their workers unlivable wages (many Walmart workers including managers need public assistance just to survive despite working full time) and as mentioned below have a horrible human rights record both internationally and domestically. They collect corporate welfare (your tax money!) at an alarming rate.

We aren't "saving" a thing by spending our money there. How ironic that so many Americans vehemently support a business that in turn hurts America in so many ways.

I live a great life without setting foot in Walmart, so can you.

I stopped going to Walmart YEARS ago.

We have two, one small and one mega.

We also have a community that is empty store fronts that Walmart shut out of business. With our City council scratching their heads as to why we have such a crappy economic growth.

Walmart gets Tax breaks, and cheap labor. They are the job creator's left in good ole' USA. It is companies like them that have made being a monopoly legal, as long as you shell in record breaking profits with no real gain for the rest of us.

I have gotten to the point, if we are even given a gift that comes from a Walmart(regardless of the maker or anything like that)...We either will give it away or return it for cash. I wont even allow anything from them to enter my home.

Like others, i have a limited budget & want to get the best deal for my money -- but also the best deal for my community because I know that's the way to ensure a strong economy & strong community in the long run.

I can't say I never shop at WalMart -- but I honestly can't remember the last time I did so. It's policies for it's employees and it's vendors are intolerable and I will not support them with my money. Their advertising tries to portray the company with a down-home, working-class-American feel but they don't play fair anyone. Why would we expect them to play fair with us?

I know I could, on some purchases, do better at WalMart -- but I can't justify it in my heart. Vote with your wallet.

I hate Walmart. I do shop there once in a while, but I really hate their business model and the way they ruin local businesses and treat their employees.

Costco MAKES MONEY. They treat their employees well. They treat their customers well. They have a successful business model. You CAN treat people well AND make money. They don't price match, they don't try to sell everything, but they do a great job with what they DO offer the public. Their employees are happy, have medical insurance and are paid a decent wage.

Regarding your experience, I would so NOT care one wit about the cashier. You are able to stand your ground while taking a stand and push to make them accountable. You got your way. You shouldn't have had to fight like this, but you are able to do it, and I applaud that. Write a letter to their corporate headquarters, proofread it several times so that you are succinct and to the point. Maybe you'll get somewhere and get them to add a note to their website.

However, they probably won't because they'd rather chance a customer coming in and begrudgingly purchase the stuff after a fight, whether they've gotten a discount or not. Leaving a full cart and walking out is what people need to do when the store doesn't adhere to their published policies, but enough people need to do it in order to make them decide that it costs them more business than it gives them.

Vote with your pocketbook and buy from the places that you were trying to match from. The less you buy from Walmart, the more incentive they have to change their way of doing business.

I don't shop at WalMart, ever. As many moms have already mentioned, WalMart is what's wrong with America today. We support their employees with our tax dollars (because even working full-time, their employees still can't afford the basics), all the while WalMart rakes in record profits. Local businesses can't compete, so they go under. On and on it goes. Don't shop there. Go to a local grocery store. Yeah, it's going to cost you a few dollars more, but chances are pretty good that they pay their people a living wage, and are re-investing their profits locally. In the long run, your whole community profits when you shop locally.

Considering employees in China live in squalor and their own filth for the low prices Wal-Mart offers to begin with, I wouldn't make such a fuss over a few bucks.

Anyhow, on the corporate site, it says "We will match any local competitor's advertised price."

It does not give a mileage. the 15 or 20 mile mileage may vary by store. 20 miles does not sound "local", I do not think you should make a fuss over this. You know you wouldn't drive 20 miles for the competitor rates anyways b/c of gas money.

I hate walmarts. I don't like using such a strong word, but I do. They have systematicaly ruined this country and I've been saying it for years and years. No one listened, now people are realizing when it's too late, well maybe not to late, but it sure has done damage.

Yes, I think their false advertising and mixed up policies are bogus and not right. Yes, it is upsetting to go through this. I would have left my groceries and walked out. As for coupons they shouldn't exist as far as I'm concerned, they're another big fat lie. Sure okay you get $ off but its all a game on the public. The truth is they can sell for a reasonable price just as things are without coupons.

Sounds like maybe they realized what you did and how much money they didn't get after your shopping spree, so decided 'not going to let that happen again' and so there you were the next day, they didn't expect you back so soon and it ruffled their feathers, sent everyone in a panic.

p.s. Wow, I just read your other posts. I had no idea so many people hate Walmarts. I agree everyone should watch the documentary. Watched it some time back, although it doesn't take a doc. to see whats plain to see, I still agree w/the poster everyone should see it. We've always called Walmart the vortex and the vampire store because it sucks life and it's like a huge vortex of spinning out of control energy that tries to suck you in. Going there makes you exhausted. I haven't shopped there in years.

tell them you're going to picket the store, call your congresscritter and all the local media.

This sounds exhausting. You can resolve your problem by calling the store and speaking with the store manager. Ask him/her directly what the distance is. Tell him his employees don't know the answer and that you compare shop and will be quoting him by name next time you are in the store, so please update the employees on the distance so it's not a problem in the future.

I think most people don't go through all the trouble you do, so it's probably not something they encounter a lot. I tend to believe most people want to do the right thing and do a good job, and it's not these employees fault each of them had different information, or didn't have the information at all.

I was a cashier at Wal-mart for 1 year from 2011-2012 and going by the policies at the store I worked at and all of the other wal-marts around here... You don't have to say where you are price-matching from. The cashier has to take your word. You can lie and make up a fake price match if you want to. All that you have to say is "This is price-matched at some dollars and some cents".

I do a bit of couponing, but I don't waste my time with the price matching thing. I figure is something really is that much cheaper somewhere else, that's where I should go to get it anyway. I just really don't have the time to argue with a minimum wage worker over a few cents here and there.

To answer your question, they should be transparent and clear with their policies. If you don't like the service, then don't shop there...Wal-Mart is just not known for good customer service.

I've never had an issue shopping at Wal*Mart in terms of them doing price matches or taking coupons. I suppose I do probably have a different view because I have worked for several retail stores and realize that often coupon policies are dictated by either region, the store manager or whomever happens to be on shift at the time. Now, no I don't agree with it but it is what it is. In my area sadly Wal*Mart is the cheapest place to shop. I wish they(all stores!)would always have a company coupon policy and always hold up their policies but sadly that is not the way things.

Sorry you got stuck dealing with this.

Wow! No I've never ever had that issue. Sorry you went through that! I did phone the first time to find out the rules like, should I bring in my weekly circular from the competing stores and they said yes, and I said "Publix has a buy one get one thing....how does that work?" and they said they'll do that IF the price is listed (like buy 2 for $5, but if there's no price at all to work with, then they won't)...stuff like that.
Never had an issue with what store I was price matching with. Sometimes they want the circular, sometimes they don't. I always bring it, and they can keep it or throw it away, their choice. Also on my shopping list I'll make a note like (page 3) or circle what I'm planning on buying in a red marker because a couple cashiers over the years wanted to see the price on the paper. I didn't get mad, I figure they're trying to cover their butts and I understand that, but it's only been a couple times in several years. Never had a problem with coupons except that sometimes they don't scan, but that's ok, they can fix it. If someone was very rude to me and they couldn't get their story straight, I'd make a complaint to the manager and then leave the stuff unpaid for.......they can match the prices as advertised, or they can restock it while my business goes elsewhere. I'm a S. though so I have that option while I know some moms just can't....

We have one other store in my area that is not Walmart. So they only match with that store. Otherwise I could go online to any newspaper in the world that had a store add and expect my local Walmart to match it. They have to have mileage limits so they can determine what stores they will match or not match.

I understand you got frustrated, it makes sense. I would not even assume they would match a store that far away. Why would you drive 20 miles to go to a store to get a discount price, you wouldn't because the gasoline cost would make the cost of the item much more than any price Walmart had.

That's the point and what makes that other store a non-competitor. They are too far away in my opinion. I could say that some store in Norman has apples for $.10 each and ask my local Walmart to match it but if the Norman store was even 15 miles away I would not expect them to consider it. They know I am not going to drive to Norman to buy any apples, that's the difference with a store being within that 5-10 mile difference.

Find ads for store withing that distance next time or go to the other store. That much mileage is like the other store is in a different town.

answers from Los Angeles on

I understand your frustration. The problem is it's their policy, they make the rules. They do leave it to the store's management, other stores do that as well.

I shop frequently at Joanne's and they say they accept coupons from Michaels, both are craft stores. I took a coupon in for 50% off an item, gave it to the woman ringing me up and she wouldn't accept it because I was buying buttons, which Michael's doesn't sell. I accepted her answer and used the coupon on another item, went home, told a friend who said I should have been allowed to use it. She called the store she shops at and they told her it's basically up to each store manager to decide. Sigh.

The best thing to do is get names when you call and they give you information to refer back to if needed, and use the same people at check-out if available whenever you go. I do this in supermarkets, Target, craft stores, wherever I shop to build up a rapport and establish consistent transactions.

I coupon a lot and a site that helps immensely, and will answer your questions to the best of his ability is "I Heart the Mart", referring to Wal-Mart.

and on Facebook,

ETA:
I forgot to mention, ALWAYS take the competitor's sale ad with you when you plan to price match. If using coupons there (if you ever go back) here is their coupon policy:
