I will be delivering my first baby at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn later this month and when I called for a tour, they were booked until August!!!! Can anyone share any experiences, pointers, etc? Like best places to park, if cell phones are allowed, do they have wireless internet, anything would be helpful.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I delivered there a little over a year ago and had a pleasant experience. The rooms are typical hospital rooms, nothing fancy. We were able to use our cell phones, but there was no wireless internet. Parking is pretty easy, the deck closest to the main entrance is where we usually park - there is a small fee. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We didn't have a tour and everything worked out just fine. Congrats!

Hi A.

I have delivered both of my boys there-the most recent last September. I have to say the experience was better than I expected. Both times I had a large room to myself. I know cell phones are allowed-I am not sure about laptops. I believe my husband and family usually parked in the tower. When I was discharged he of course met me downstairs in front of the hospital and a nurse escorts you and the baby out in a wheelchair. The nurses are awesome!! Congratulations on your soon to be new addition !!

Hi, I actually delivered both my kids at Christ (6-1/2 and 2-1/2 years ago), but I had GREAT experiences. Everyone was so awesome! We were supposed to have delivered at Palos, but because my first one was in distress, we had the baby at Christ, and it was go pleasant, we just planned our 2nd baby there too!!! Parking is easy - you can park obviously in the tower which cost money, or you can park across the street (kitty corner) and that is free. In regards to cell phones, I didn't think they liked for you to use them, but not sure. I had my own room for my first baby, but the second baby, for one night, I had a roommate! It didn't really bother me, but it was nicer when I was alone. I think they try for you to be by yourself, but if it is crowded... My hubby actually spent the night with me every night. (The nurse said he couldn't when I had the roomie, but me and her talked, and we both said it was ok that our hubbies stayed, that we didn't mind), so they were able to stay again. The food was actually ok I thought! Also, at Christ, any one could come and visit your room and hold the baby, etc., whereas at Palos, only the Grandparents can come in (maybe other kids if you have them as well..not sure), but that is it in your room. (That could be a good thing or bad thing)!!!! ha!!!

Anyway, you will be in good hands!!! Congratulations for a happy and healthy delivery.

I delivered both of my kids there and loved it (I was also born there!). My first child was the "normal" way- I had contractions starting at home, etc. and went in. My second child was induced. Just enter at the main entrance (anytime AFTER 6AM)- there is a parking garage right next to that entrance. Tell the person at the desk you're in labor and they'll direct you to the elevator and you'll go to the 2nd floor. There's a security guard at the desk once you get off the elevator- tell him you're in labor and he'll escort you through a set of doors and you'll be greeted by a nurse who will basically "make sure" you are in real labor- taking your vitals, monitoring contractions, etc. Bring all your suitcases, IDs, insurance card, etc. with you when you first get there- I believe they ask for your Driver's License as a form of ID. Parking is $8 a day (I think!), BUT there are some FREE lots down the street from the main entrance if your husband, etc. have time to search for an empty free spot. :) I had a wonderful experience with both deliveries. My first one was pretty standard, but my second ended up in an emergency c-section- a scary experience, but the staff at Christ was extremely professional, caring, and helpful and they put me and my husband at ease. Please write back if you have anymore questions. Oh, and yes bring your cell phones (and pack the charger!)- not sure about wireless though. And bring change for the vending machines! You can have Barracco's Pizza delivered to the hospital too- here's the number ###-###-####- someone would just have to meet the delivery guy at the main entrance to Christ. I highly recommend Barracco's, even though the hospital food isn't too bad. :) Overall, Christ was great and I would recommend it to anyone!

I had my daughter at the end of April 2009, at Christ. I was also there several times over the course of my pregnancy for little complications (nothing too serious). I really liked my experiences there with this pregnancy compared to my first pregnancy. they made a lot of changes for the better with mother/child related care. They are also a lot more focused on bonding between mother and child and the importance of mother's who want to breastfeed.

We had a great room this past time. It was a "corner room" and huge! All rooms are single patient so no sharing. I really liked many of my nurses. If anyone is out of line, stand up for yourself. It's your body, your baby... you need what you need to do. (I had an issue with a nurse telling me that I was holding my baby/breastfeeding too often. She was clearly out of line. But that was only one person)

They "say" cell phones aren't allowed but I've never had a problem using them. The reception in the L&D rooms sucks. The reception in the post-partum rooms is great. They do have wireless internet. Bring your laptop! It is such a relief to have something to do.

Good luck and wishing you a quick and easy delivery with a healthy baby at the end!
